Rick Santorum’s hypocrisy knows no bounds

This man would require that rape victims carry their pregnancy to term regardless of what it does to the her, but when his own wife’s life was threatened by a pregnancy gone wrong he had her get an abortion. He’s fine with applying his morality to everyone else, but when it comes to his own family, well, “the situation is different”, as he has said in the past.

Should this asshole land the Republican nomination remember the fact that he doesn’t think his own rules apply to him or his family. #seb #politics #Rick_Santorum #Republicans #Abortion

Santorum: Sexual Assault Victims Should Accept Pregnancy, “Make The Best Out Of A Bad Situation”
Rick Santorum told Piers Morgan why he is against abortion, even if a rape victim would be traumatized by carrying a fetus to term.
SANTORUM : Well, you can make the argument that if she doesn’t have this baby, if she kills her child, that that, too, could ruin her life. And this is not an easy choice. I understand that. As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child. And whether she has that child or doesn’t, it will always be her child. And she w…

Indiana Republican Eric Turner worries that women will fake a rape or incest to get free abortions.

Wow. The Republicans are really chowing down on their own feet as of late. First we have Sean Duffy whining about 174K a year not being enough to survive on. Now we have an Indiana state representative who’s worried that women will fake having been victims of rape or incest in order to get an abortion under a proposed law in his state that will make it harder to get abortions:

In an attempt to soften the blow this bill would land on Hoosier women, state Rep. Gail Riecken (D) introduced an amendment to exempt “women who became pregnant due to rape or incest, or women for whom pregnancy threatens their life or could cause serious and irreversible physical harm” from being forced to carry to term. Fearing this bill would “push women to the back alleys” for illegal abortions, Riecken pleaded with lawmakers to allow women to make the choice in these cases.

Turner then stepped to the podium and insisted that Riecken’s amendment would create a “giant loophole” for women. That loophole? Women “could simply say they’ve been raped”

Check it:

To say that Rep. Linda Lawson’s (D) followup was restrained is an understatement. Ultimately, however, asshat Representative Turner got what he wanted and the amendment was defeated in a 42 to 54 vote. It now moves on to the Senate which has already passed a similar bill so this is likely to make it to the Governor’s desk.

Hat tip to The Synthcore Daily for the heads up.

Proposed law in Georgia would make abortion and miscarriages capital crimes.

Pic of Republican Douchebag.

A master of well-reasoned and sensible legislation.

It should be no surprise that this proposed law comes from a Republican:

Ga. Law Could Give Death Penalty for Miscarriages – Mother Jones

Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin—who last year proposed making rape and domestic violence “victims” into “accusers”—has introduced a 10-page bill that would criminalize miscarriages and make abortion in Georgia completely illegal. Both miscarriages and abortions would be potentially punishable by death: any “prenatal murder” in the words of the bill, including “human involvement” in a miscarriage, would be a felony and carry a penalty of life in prison or death. Basically, it’s everything an “pro-life” activist could want aside from making all women who’ve had abortions wear big red “A”s on their chests.

I doubt that a bill that makes a legal medical procedure liable for the death penalty will pass. The bill, however, shows an astonishing lack of concern for women’s health and well-being. Under Rep. Franklin’s bill, HB 1, women who miscarry could become felons if they cannot prove that there was “no human involvement whatsoever in the causation” of their miscarriage. There is no clarification of what “human involvement” means, and this is hugely problematic as medical doctors do not know exactly what causes miscarriages. Miscarriages are estimated to terminate up to a quarter of all pregnancies and the Mayo Clinic says that “the actual number is probably much higher because many miscarriages occur so early in pregnancy that a woman doesn’t even know she’s pregnant. Most miscarriages occur because the fetus isn’t developing normally.”

That’s right, not only could you potentially face the death penalty under Franklin’s law, but you’re saddled with the burden of proof that your miscarriage wasn’t intentional. Can you imagine what’d it be like to have to deal with the trauma of a miscarriage while at the same time having to defend yourself in a court of law for fear of being put on death row for it?

There’s no way this bill would survive a Constitutional challenge should it manage to pass, but that shouldn’t be necessary anyway so long as there are still some politicians in Georgia with more than two brain cells to rub together. Surely they’re not all as brain-dead stupid as Rep. Franklin, right? Right?!?

New study determines that abortions don’t cause mental health issues.

One of the arguments put forth by anti-abortion advocates is that it causes major mental health problems for the woman who has one, but a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine says that’s not the case at all:

“This is an extremely, extremely well done study,” he said. “There is no evidence that abortion predisposes a woman to psychiatric and mental health problems.”

[…] Blum, a former president of the Guttmacher Institute, would like to say goodbye to the political buzz words.

“There is no post-abortion trauma, post-abortion syndrome, or anything of the like,” he said.

Danish researchers looked at the health records of 85,000 women who had had first-trimester abortions. Those women were more likely to seek mental health treatment while they were pregnant, but didn’t need more help after having the abortion. That’s not surprising, says Nada Stotland, a professor of psychiatry at Rush Medical College in Chicago. She says that women considering abortion are often struggling with problems with a partner or family members.

“People have abortions often under troubled circumstances,” she said. “You have an abortion because there is a problem.”

What makes this study unique is that it looked at women who chose abortions and also looked at women who chose to have the baby. Stotland says this gives us a much better picture of the stresses of abortion and childbirth.

“Above all it really fairly contrasts the outcomes of abortion with the outcomes of pregnancy,” she said.

via Study: Abortions Don’t Cause Mental Health Issues : NPR.

As it turns out giving birth is actually more likely to cause mental health problems with postpartum depression being one of the major ones. It would help quite a bit if more resources were devoted to post-birth mental health care for new mothers.

While this study most likely won’t end the debate anytime soon, it does debunk one of the common arguments against abortion.

Anti-abortionists asked what the punishment should be if it’s made illegal have no answers.

This video clip is a couple of years old — it was uploaded to YouTube in January of 2008 — but I only came across it recently via a link on Common Sense Atheism. It was filmed at an anti-abortion protest and in it women are asked a very simple question: If abortion is made illegal what should be the punishment for women who have illegal abortions?

I must admit I was stunned that so many people didn’t have an answer for this question and that many suggested there shouldn’t be any punishment beyond counseling. The interviewer asks simple, non-aggressive followup questions such as “If there’s no punishment then what’s the point of making it illegal?” which, again, they have no answer for. Or the answers they do have are contradictory and silly.

Some of these people have been involved in anti-abortion protesting for years without ever pondering the simple question of what the punishment should be. I find that staggering to consider. I guess I always just assumed they’d want the woman put in prison for a certain number of years; perhaps life or even a death sentence. There’s probably a few folks out there who would say that’s what it should be, but I hadn’t stopped to think there’d be so many who haven’t given the subject of penalties any thought whatsoever.

That’s one of the problems of letting emotions get the better of you when considering laws or pushing for change. Abortion tends to be a highly emotional issue for the folks who are against it and it appears that in their rush to do something about it they’re not taking the time to think the issue through fully and they’re willing to leave the details for someone else to figure out. That often leads to very bad policy at worse or very stupid policy at best.  But then I suppose if they spent any time thinking about the issue they run the risk of changing their minds about it and Lord knows you can’t let that happen.

Protect your Christmas tree with a soldier fetus!

Say you’re a committed anti-abortionist and gung-ho support-the-troops-right-or-wrong conservative who’s looking for the ultimate Christmas tree ornament that can demonstrate your two passions in a single decoration. Surely there’s nothing that fits the bill, right?

Wrong! The folks at “MissPoppy.com” (tagline:What a trend we have in Jesus™) are offering this clever Soldier Fetus Ornament just in time for the holidays!

Protect our troops – from the womb to the war. What if the fetus you were going to abort would grow up to be a soldier bringing democracy to a godless dictatorship?

Plastic replica of an 11-12 week old fetus, 3” long, holding a firearm in its precious little hand, with an assortment of other military paraphernalia, encased in a translucent plastic ornament, with a patriotic yellow ribbon on top. Includes a metal ornament hanger. If only a womb were this safe, attractive and reasonably priced!

Show that you support the “culture of life” by buying and proudly displaying one of these patriotic unborn Americans.

Also available in a “Brown” model

You gotta love that dig at atheists they managed to squeeze in there with the comment on “godless dictatorships” and the fact that they’re also offering a “brown” model for all you “brown” conservatives out there. The message is clear: By aborting that baby you could be condemning millions of innocent people to lives under Godless dictators by destroying a possible Christian warrior! Why it’s a wonder these ornaments aren’t convincing people to have as many babies as possible so they might grow up to be a whole platoon of Holy Warriors unto themselves!

I’ve see some tacky Christmas decorations in my time, but this one takes the cake. Oh, and in case you think this just HAS to be a gag, the folks at MissPoppy have you covered:
