Bush to oversee probe into what went wrong

(subheadline)President also says Cheney will visit Gulf Coast on Thursday
(So he is alive and well. I figured he was either dead, really sick, or on vacation!)

from MSNBC:

WASHINGTON – Beset with criticism over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, President Bush said Tuesday he will oversee an investigation into what went wrong and why — in part to be sure that the country would withstand more storms or even a weapons of mass destruction attack.

All I can say is “You have got to be kidding!”

How could so many people (the 50 odd percent that voted for him) be SO very wrong!

I am literally shaking right now…

Has Hell taken residence on Earth?

I have been watching the coverage of the “aftermath” of Katrina. I have to say that I am appalled at what I am seeing. I expected to see relief efforts happening on Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest. It’s now Friday and we have yet to see National Guard arriving in New Orleans to start bring order to a city turned Hell.

What happened to all the planning and such that should have been started not long after 9/11? What has happened to New Orleans, not to mention the rest of the areas affected, is equivalent to a nuclear explosion above the cities.

I turned on the TV this morning to what looked like renewed attacks in Baghdad only to find it was downtown New Orleans. I was truly amazed!

However, that is just a drop in the bucket as to how I felt when I heard MSNBC’s reporters commending the reporters that are in New Orleans and other areas “enduring” the same “hardships” that the multitudes of people that have been there since the storm hit were enduring. I thought I was going to jump into the TV and go postal in their studio. UNBELIEVABLE! I didn’t leave that channel on for very long. Not that any of the other channels are doing that much better of a job. Anderson Cooper at least seemed sincere enough.

I don’t know if Les will post this for me or not. It’s not really on topic for his site, but I need an outlet for how I am feeling right now and typing this at least is helping a little.

[Editor’s Note:] I’ve gone ahead and posted it, though I should mention that there is a National Guard presence in the city. There is quite a bit of debate on whether there’s enough of a presence, but they are there at the moment.]

Nintendo proving how “insane” patents are

Nintendo Patents Insanity (SlashDot link)

Yes, apparently, Nintendo feels the need to patent an aspect of an RPG. Why in the world do they feel they need to do this? The patent states:

A video game and game system incorporating a game character’s sanity level that is affected by occurrences in the game such as encountering a game creature or gruesome situation. A character’s sanity level is modified by an amount determined based on a character reaction to the occurrence such as taking a rest or slowing game progress and/or an amount of character preparation. That is, if a character is prepared for the particular occurrence, the occurrence may have little or no affect on the character’s sanity level. As the character’s sanity level decreases, game play is effected such as by controlling game effects, audio effects, creating hallucinations and the like. In this context. the same game can be played differently each time it is played.

I wonder just how long it will be before other game developers start patenting their ideas? I suppose D&D has some lock on the rules that they created. Probably copyright based. Is there any that Blizzard can use. Instances perhaps?

What does this gain developers like Nintendo? Will they use them to trade with other deveopers for other ideas?

In the long run, all this does is stifel the game development community. If a small developer was working on a game that used this idea, I suspect they will have to either license it from Nintendo, or just dump all the code and start over again.
