My first vlog.

I’ve been talking about trying to get into vlogging for awhile now, but I’ve allowed my trepidation to get the better of me and have kept putting it off until I had a better webcam and then a better mic and then a better Internet connection and so on. Fact is, I don’t know what I’m doing. Then again I didn’t know what I was doing when I started blogging 16 years ago and I’ve done alright with that.

So here it is. It’s short, doesn’t have anything particularly interesting to say, but it’s something and works well as a test of my setup if nothing else. Oh, there is a surprise camo by Jasper the cat:

As you can tell, I’m nervous and not well spoken. I’m assuming that’ll get better in time. I also made this via Google Hangouts because Windows 10’s built-in camera up won’t allow you to choose what mic to record from and I can’t seem to find anything better to use. I’m open to suggestions on what you’d like to see from me.

  1. 16 years? I stumbled upon you somewhere back then – perhaps during the Expression Engine days (although you may have unwittingly dragged me into EE) – I’ve long since stopped personal blogging, but did, about a year ago, start video podcasts, which I promptly dropped for an audio podcast on a chosen topic.

And I think this is the first time I’ve heard your voice!

You have a smooth, calm cadence in the way you speak – no nervous ticks that jumped out at me (ums, errrs, etc) – and I’m working really hard to get them from my voice when I’m talking!. The audio quality and camera quality was just fine.

Perhaps get into some of the topics you used to blog about? Politics, religion? Tech topics are more suited to written form, maybe. Do some Q&A’s? Maybe even interviews (easily done on Google Hangouts with people who aren’t close).

    Anyway, back to lurking 🙂

  2. For not knowing what you are doing you are doing an excellent job. Your camera work is very good, your audio is easy to hear and understand, ( I’m partial deaf you know .) So I would say you have a great start on your new project. As to what to talk about I’ll have to think about that but you are good about coming up with topics. So go get ’em tiger!!

  3. Hi Les , your doing just fine , nice steady voice. You look better than the image you used to have on your blog ( devil horns ). I’m English so its nice to hear from a quietly spoken , thoughtful American. I would like to hear more about what you think of what’s going on in the world , especially in relation to Mr Trump.

  4. Thanks for the encouragement. I’m sure I’ll come up with something as time goes on. Right now it’s a lot of experimentation as I figure things out. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of ums and uhs in the future which is why I need to learn how to edit videos. 🙂

  5. It’s been a while since I visited. I thought it went well. Maybe a good rant would work.
