I miss drinking cola.

I gave up drinking regular sodas in my early thirties and diet colas in 2011 which means it’s been 5 years since I’ve last tasted a cola of any kind.

I really miss it.

Most days I’m fine and it doesn’t cross my mind, but then something happens and I’m reminded how much I loved Coca Cola in particular and colas in general. Today it’s my cubemate sitting across from me with a Diet Coke. He’s not flaunting it or anything, it’s just sitting there on his desk and he’s taking occasional sips from it.

And it looks so good.

These days 98% of what I drink in a day is plain old tap water. I start the day with a cup or two of coffee and then it’s my 32 ounce water bottle for the rest of the day. Anne’s been including small cans of tomato juice in my lunch the last week or so and that’s made for a nice change. Occasionally I’ll have some milk with dinner. Otherwise it’s lots and lots of water.

I hate water. It’s so fucking boring. Putting lemon in it or one of the various flavoring mixes doesn’t help so I just drink it plain, but I hates it. I know I’m better off having given up sodas and drinking more water, but that doesn’t make me feel any better about it.

I don’t really have a point with all of this, I’m just feeling a bit whiney so I thought I’d get it out of my system.

  1. I am strictly a coffee man in the morning, and water throughout the day. I use to drink dairy milk. It’s sustainable but would not say it’s desirable. In the US it is like going through the educational system and never getting more than a D – on a report card. It’s not failure. Pus is not all that bad. I doubt anyone would notice a pimple being popped into a glass of milk. That’s about what it amounts to. And pasteurizing living pus just makes for dead pus. It’s still pus. I not really trying to see how many times I can say pus and milk. It’s just turning out that way.

    I do like almond and soy based milks. I am mostly sure they allow for a certain amount of mouse shit, and maybe a few cockroach pieces, so I am thinking C + or B -. Juice is good if it’s low card/sugar. Good luck finding it. I will admit to drinking grapefruit and cranberry juice a couple of times a year. They actually go good together. I am living large on those days.

  2. I stopped drinking any kind of cola or soft drink almost a year ago when I went on my year-long diet.

    On April 15th of last year, I weighed a svelte 365 lbs. I decided I needed to DO something, so I went on a diet. I didn’t set a goal, just a time frame — ONE YEAR. In that period of time, I would cut out sugar, carbs, and glutten. I also stayed away from anything that said “diet”, “fat free” “low-fat”, “sugar-free” and all processed foods, or foods with a high sodium or MSG count.

    This morning I weighed in at 240 lbs, and I have fifteen days to go. I figure I can be down to 230 lbs by the end of my diet.

    So how did I survive without sugar? At first it was a bit rocky. But I found substitutes like honey to help me get through the initial shock of not having sugar.

    Today, if I eat sugar, I can FEEL it. It is almost like a drug, and you NOTICE it.

    I know what you mean about just drinking water. It can be very boring.

    I’ve taken to drinking tea. Green tea, mostly, but I do shake it up just to make it interesting.

  3. I feel your pain, which is why I haven’t completely given up diet sodas. I LOVE Diet Coke, which I try to limit to the occasions when Erin and I go out to dinner. I justify that to myself with the argument that I rarely drink anymore…so how bad can the occasional Diet Coke (or three) be?

    I understand that I’m better off without it, but I also believe that all things in moderation is a good (and manageable) philosophy. I don’t do well going “cold turkey.”

  4. I cut back on my sodas years ago, but I still have one on weekend mornings(real sugar, not hfcs sweetened). I’d suggest trying that, unless it’s a pretty strong addiction that will lead you back into daily consumption.

    I’ve been trying to avoid hfcs and splenda/nutrisweet in my foods. Especially when I realized that a lot of tomato based products were made with more hfcs than tomatoes.

  5. I average a can of soda per day, and that’s it. When I’d quit cold turkey for a spell, I found myself wanting more than double the caffeinated unsweetened tea and that didn’t seem good either.

    Water is best when it is ice cold. The numb makes me feel less like I’m drinking water. Water just seems more efficient than buying an overpriced drink at a restaurant (unless you’re in Flint).

  6. The first step is admitting you have an addiction. Now you need to admit that only a higher power can save you.

  7. I suggest joining the ranks of tea drinkers, unless tea counts as a “flavoring mix” that doesn’t help. Loose leaf tea can get pretty tasty; there’s Adagio (www.adagio.com) as a very affordable option, but it’s worth it to wander into a Teavana store at the mall to talk to a tea person (apparently there’s tea people?) for an expert opinion, although those kids usually have overly sweet blends out to try. I have found that cinnamon tea tastes great, is low-cal and caffeine obviously, and the leaves stand up to many repeated uses (which means even more affordable!).

  8. I appreciate the suggestions. Tea and I have never gotten along well unless it’s had enough sugar in it to put me in a coma which kinda defeats the point of not drinking soda. It’s kinda of like those water flavorings in that it just tastes weak to me and not very satisfying.

    When I drink water I do tend to put ice in it so as to number my tastebuds to have bland it is. That helps. Every now and then, though, fond memories of cola come rushing back to me. Of course if I were to try and drink it now it’d taste like malted battery acid, but still…

  9. Try drinking liquorice tea. Even cold it tastes great. It has a very sweet taste with a zero glycemic index hit. It really helps fancy up plain old water with no penalty.
