According to the Levi’s Jeans CEO, you should never wash your jeans.

I’m a big fan of jeans. They compose nearly 90% of my wardrobe. I’m lucky enough to get to wear them to work. I’ve been wearing them for as long as I can remember.

And I’ve apparently been caring for them in entirely the wrong way…

Huh. I will often wear the same pair of jeans for a couple days in a row if it’s the weekend, but considering the amount of crap I end up getting on them regularly (e.g. food, dirt, awesomesauce, etc.) I’m not sure it’s a good idea for me to go more than a few days without tossing them in the washing machine. That said, I do seem to wear the right knee out pretty quickly as of late for reasons I cannot begin to fathom.

According to some folks at Levi’s you should just toss them in the freezer one a month to freshen them up. The official website says you should wash them infrequently and when you do wash them you should put in a lot more effort than most Americans (and this is certainly true for myself) are probably willing to commit to.

I’m not sure if I can go the never-wash-them-but-freeze-them-occasionally route anytime soon, but it’s good to know I could probably go a few days before I toss them into the washing machine.

  1. I wash my jeans only when the crotch smells (btw I am a woman ;)) or when there is obvious visible dirt. During the winter (in Alaska) they never get dirty so I will wear them for months without washing. Summer camping season is different: mud, campfire smoke…I honestly hate having to wash them but sometimes it’s just necessary.

Btw Less, although I am a very long time (mostly) lurker for at least a decade, I am considering getting a Google+ account just so I can comment (and read other’s comments) on your Google+ posts. I’m sorry I’ve been so silent, especially during important events like birthdays and graduations etc. I also should have been more supportive during your struggles through the years. Your blog has provided me comfort (you are one of the first atheist blogs I had come upon, way back then), information, and laughter. I have often wanted to contribute but I suffer from so much social anxiety that even posting through a pseudonym is difficult. The only reason I am doing it now is because I’ve just had several beers. I might regret this in the morning. I am considering deleting this comment right now. Screw it. Here goes….

  2. Akspock, thank you for the comment. I’ve said before that I’m often humbled by the fact that anyone bothers to read anything I write and that’s especially so now that I’m not blogging as much as I once did. I appreciate you coming our of lurk mode long enough to let me know you’re still around. I hope you’ll continue to comment in the future. I appreciate all of the feedback.

As for washing jeans, do you wear a different pair every day or is it more of a succession of days before moving onto the next pair? I can’t go more than a couple of days without spilling something on mine so after a day or two I end up tossing them into the wash.
