The Republicans aren't going to be happy until they've pulled us all the way back to the 19th century.

Newt's not the first Republican I've heard railing against child labor laws, but this suggestion is certainly one of the stupidest so far. #seb

Gingrich: Fire Union Janitors And Put Kids To Work
Speaking at Harvard Newt Gingrich spoke out against child labor laws saying they “entrap” young people. The solution? Fire unionized janitors so underage children can take their jobs. Put adults with families out of work to help poor children.
“You say to somebody, you shouldn’t go to work before you’re what, 14, 16 years of age, fine. You’re totally poor. You’re in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing. I’ve tried for years to have a very simple model,” he said. “Most of th…

  1. You know, I can see how this idea can appeal…but people like Gingrich and others who agree might not realize that the whole point for child labor laws was to keep young children from being victimized and taken advantage of. But, of course what to these people care so I guess I would be talking to a brick wall…

  2. They just keep going further and further back in time, trying to zap any progress ever made in this country’s history. They all want to get rid of “Obamacare.” Ron Paul wants to do away with Medicare and Medicaid. Bachmann has warned against un-American activities in our government. Rick Perry believes that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. Now Newt wants to get rid of child labor laws. I am just waiting for the Republican candidate who comes out for re-introducing British colonialism. That guy is sure to win the GOP nomination.

  3. I am so sick and goddamn tired of these dumbass republican “failing schools” and “failing teachers” memes. Our public schools work pretty damn well when they are funded and when teachers are allowed to teach students ideas and concepts along with rote test answers. They have done the basic job for generations of Americans.

In my experience, the only reasons any schools actually regularly fail to educate children is either a matter of money, when extremely poor districts can’t afford decent schools, staff, security, or programs and don’t get any help, or when republicans go on the attack with things like NCLB, specifically designed to make great schools “average” and kill poor schools off outright.

It blows my mind that these disgusting thugs can actually do what they do and say what they say without huge amounts of backlash, but I guess when you’ve got half the population convinced that our government is the most evil thing ever (except the police and military, of course), it becomes easier to get people to believe that illiteracy, generational ignorance and poverty, and serfdom for tens of millions of people is somehow preferable to freedom and civilization.
