Harold Camping has unveiled his excuse: The Apocalypse did occur, just not the way we thought it would.

Harold Camping at 6:01PM Saturday, May 21st, 2011.

We’ve all been waiting with bated breath for Harold Camping to come out of his shell and explain why the rapture didn’t occur last Saturday like he said it would. Will he shift the goal posts as is often the tactic of the overly credulous when their predictions fail to materialize? (It’s the tactic used by the True Bible Nutcases and it has worked for them nearly 300 times now!) Will he admit he’s a clueless old man who talked thousands into ruining their lives? Or will he stubbornly insist that his predication came true, just not in the manner he thought it would?

If you picked option C then you’re a winner!

Through chatting with a friend over what he acknowledged was a very difficult weekend, it dawned on him that instead of the biblical Rapture in which the faithful would be swept up to the heavens, May 21 had instead been a “spiritual” Judgment Day, which places the entire world under Christ’s judgment, he said.

The globe will be completely destroyed in five months, he said, when the apocalypse comes. But because God’s judgment and salvation were completed on Saturday, there’s no point in continuing to warn people about it, so his network will now just play Christian music and programs until the final end on Oct. 21.

“We’ve always said May 21 was the day, but we didn’t understand altogether the spiritual meaning,” he said. “The fact is there is only one kind of people who will ascend into heaven … if God has saved them they’re going to be caught up.”

Yes, it’s not that he was wrong about the date of the rapture, he was just wrong about the saved being swept up into Heaven during the rapture. Instead, the saved get to stay here on Earth to annoy the hell out of the rest of us right up to the point where the Earth is destroyed by God in October.

The good news is that in 5 months time we get to make fun of Harold Camping and anyone who’s still stupid enough to believe him all over again.

  1. One of the coolest things about Xtianity is how it makes world-changing events happen without a shred of evidence. The Rapture happened! Really! There’s just nothing to indicate that anything changed. Jeebus just came down and talked face-to-face with Obama, the Ayatollah and Pope Palpatine, but he wiped their minds before he left, so they won’t tell you about it. Their denials are proof!

Never mind the second coming, as there doesn’t, in fact, appear to be a shred of real evidence for the first coming. But Camping likely has a sincere belief in both. Probably even the majority of Evangelicals think Camping is a goofball, and they simply refuse to believe that mainstream Evangelicals like Billy Graham and his grandson are also goofballs. As Edward Current points out, the end of the world will come on Dec. 21, 2012. 🙂

  3. Apparently, there weren’t enough people offering up their life’s savings to the old geeser, so he’s decided to give it another go.

  4. Can’t wait to see his excuse in October! LOL! He should join that guy in jumping off that mountain on December 21, 2012!

  5. I can’t believe this guy isnt in jail. For what he has done to some people I think that he deserves life in prison. If the repture does arrive than he only has five months in jail and then he will be free. If he is a criminal and a liar that he can rot away. He has ruined so many peoples lives. He has caused people to give up their life savings or even give up their lives and for what.

  6. First the Rapture was in ’94, then the 21st of May, now the 21st of October… slowly but surely.

Jesus states in more than one Gospel that the world will end within the lifetime of those followers standing before him. Paul wrote that Jesus was returning soon. But such trifling matters (false prophesies and unfulfilled promises) never bother the religious. Christianity has been adjusting to these minor inconveniences for centuries; otherwise it would have never survived its very first century. The sacred art of apologetics and the virtue of blind faith sort these problems out quite nicely.

On an unrelated yet reminiscent note; it was fun today hearing on CNN that a clergyman was claiming that God had saved him from the tornadoes. Through the power of prayer, of course. The town was destroyed, hundreds were killed, and his freaking church was blown away; but as long as reverend so and so survives everything is right with the world.

Apparently the meaning of life is that our species exists solely for the benefit of these dear clergymen. Hopefully Texas biology text books will include chapters explaining this aspect of Intelligent Design.

  7. daniel chapter 12 gives you the day of the second coming of Jesus Christ and i can prove this through the word. i would love to have a chance to explain the second coming of Christ, which does have a date of return, and the third coming of Christ which is the coming that no one knows the day or hour of. the church is taught that Jesus is going to sit up in heaven and call us up to him in heaven, but the Bible teaches Jesus is coming to earth to get us John 14:1-3 and then take us back to heaven. this is his SECOND COMING for those that follow Christ Hebrews 9:28 but at his THIRD COMING after the wrath of God is poured out on the earth every body on earth will see him Revelation 1:7 these are two different comings. but the thing that will start the count down to Christ second coming is the command for the Jews to rebuild the third temple Daniel 9:24-25. i have set a date that i will not back down from, because the Bible backs it up, as for brother camping he needs to understand there are 22 chapters in the book of Revelation, if you explain this book you can’t skip any chapters call me and question
me i will avoid any questions, it is my destiny to teach this book for Jesus.

  8. my number is 334-379-0964 i live in Alabama like i said the news people are talking to the wrong guy i know the book of revelation very well

  9. Ol’ Harold doesn’t even when to just take it and go…
The only thing he predicted is the day he ends up in the nursing home, because life in prison will be short since he looks like he’ll crok any second
October 21st is just another day
