Someone in Pakistan is very busy making fake accounts on SEB.

And I haven’t a clue as to why as they don’t appear to be using them for a damned thing. There’s at least two IP address ranges that they keep showing up under, the latest was from 116.71.57.96 which shows up as part of PTCL Triple Play Project which belongs to the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited which is apparently a major broadband provider in Pakistan. I suspect that these are fakes because A) the names being registered are definitely not Pakistani, B) the email address is always for a Yahoo! mail account and C) after registering they don’t appear to ever visit the site again.

What I can’t figure out is the point of this activity. They’re not putting spam links in the account profiles, they’re not using them to try and submit entries to the blog, and there’s no facility in WordPress to use an account as an email relay. They just register account after account sometimes within mere minutes of each other and all the IP addresses trace back to Pakistan. It’s like there’s some weird contest over there to see who can amass the most SEB accounts or something.

I’ve taken to deleting them when I notice them piling up and, so far, no one has dropped me an email to ask why the fuck I deleted their account. So I’m stumped. Anyone else running WordPress notice this happening at their site?

  1. That’s ominous. It sounds like their gathering an army of accounts for some sort of almighty spam attack.

  2. I get this too from time to time, however I have received more spam comments lately then accounts. But every time I go through and clean up my accounts I see plenty of them created that are obviously bogus accounts that were never used. One time I think I had accounts that had been around for close to a year that were bogus but never used.

Makes me wonder if the people creating them are just using them to find holes in the software? Maybe they create the account, and then try exploits and permission escalation and such. Not sure, but I can’t think of any other reason.

  3. When they have created enough accounts on enough websites they are going to link them all together to create a huge network. This will then take over a car factory, where it will create a Transformer, which will then take on SETI and CERN in a fight to the death – the winner gets to make the human race it’s slave.

    It’s actual science, man.

  4. I don’t know why people can’t live and let live. They have always got to be screwing with something or someone. In this case I would imagine they have a bug up their ass because you are a liberal atheist. I would not be surprised to hear that someone has tried to actually harm you or a family member. Since you are not a friend of Jesus. You must be a friend of the Devil. And people don’t get that you don’t believe in the Devil either. People are just fuckin nuts.

  5. Paul, I’ve had a threat or two over the years, but nothing I’d take seriously. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve gotten any hate mail let alone any threats.

Just noticed that they’ve re-registered one of the accounts I deleted yesterday. Email address is brooks.conrad89@yahoo.com and yet the IP address is 116.71.61.167 and 116.71.x.x is PTCL as listed above. Again, nothing in the profile to indicate it’s a spam account.

  6. Maybe its a business.. Once someone has a huge list of accounts they have created successfully, they can sell the list to a spammer who then uses a bot to post to the accounts.. They probably are doing it randomly all over the web..

The captcha should discourage that however

  7. Be careful man. Most of pakistanis/Muslims are terrorists. They might be using your site as a source for a blast.. .

What the fuck is wrong with you?

  9. Here we go IND/PAK fight begins in this small replies. Anywas back to the subject, it is probably for a spam (a huge one probably) which is probably planned for the near future.
