Get ’em when they’re young…

Here’s a video that’ll disturb you. It shows the Answers in Genesis folks trying to counter what small kids have been taught about Evolution:

I especially love the woman who talks about how most Christians are perceived as ignorant and then proceeds to demonstrate said ignorance by saying that she prefers the Biblical explanation for life because it’s “just easier to explain to your children.”

It’s clear most of these kids barely grasp the concept of Creationism, let alone Evolution, but that doesn’t matter so long as these folks can convince them that the former is true and the latter is false. Some of them will grow up and change their minds as they’re better able to grasp the concepts and are exposed to the science, but for too many of them the nonsense they’re being fed now will stick with them throughout their lives.

And, yes, the rest of us will consider them ignorant.

  1. Why did the pictures of “Grandfather” and “Grandmother” look just like Ken Ham? I think he found those photos in his family album.

  2. Fucking sick! The only redeeming part of the video are the children looking disinterested and bored out of their skull.

  3. “God said it, I believe it, that settles it!”
That is the very definition of an ignorant and closed mind.

  4. I couldn’t watch the whole thing…. Too disgusting. Too much willful ignorance all in one place gives me migraines. One can only hope that like many things at that age, it went through one ear and out the other, but I know that hope is in vain for a significant portion of those children.

It would be fitting if these parent’s children grew up to eventually accept Evolution and then made fun of their parents for their continued stupidity.

  5. You guys… C’mon, it’s their religion, they believe in what the fuck they want to. Why so much repression? Against christians, specially! You don’t see people mocking a hindu for believing that his father is now a grasshopper or whatever. Every religion has it’s conflict points with science, it shouldn’t make your jaws fall. Also, its their kids, let them teach them whatever they want. If they were born native americans, they would believe in the sun and nobody would give a fuck.
All of that of guys who consider themselves open minded and intelligent… shame on you.

  6. Cate, show me a Hindu or a Native American that is actively trying to undermine the teaching of Evolution to their kids by suggesting that their religion’s creation story is the actual, literal, truth and then perhaps I’ll concede that you have a point. I’ve known my fair share of Hindus and Native Americans in my time and I can’t recall ever hearing a single one of them tell me that the Theory of Evolution is total bullshit and that their religion’s creation story is how it really happened, but I’ve heard lots of Christians tell me that.

And I would be perfectly willing to let these idiots be the credulous morons they are if it weren’t for the fact that they are actively trying to get their bullshit taught in public schools. Or that they encourage the kids they’re brainwashing to disrupt science classes with creationist bullshit. They can’t just be happy in their own ignorance, they have to try and foist it off on the rest of us as well.

  7. Cate: Not even close. Buddhists aren’t knocking on the doors of public schools saying “You have to teach everyone about reincarnation” This guy, and people like him, throw their support behind “Teaching the controversy” and other stupid programs aimed specifically at science education in the public school system. Yes, they have the right to teach whatever messed up theories they want to… to their own followers, but not to my kid, to your kid or to the millions of other kids out there who don’t subscribe to their messed up outlook on reality. If they would keep it to themselves I wouldn’t give a ticks butt hair what they told their own kids. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stay in the church.

  8. This is cult behavior at its finest. It borders on child abuse, and there is no clearer example of indoctrination that can be given. Jim Jones would be proud of this display of brainwashing.
Sometimes atheists find themselves wondering how people can actually believe this stuff into adulthood. Well, now you know. They get you before you can barely read or write, much less think critically. This is also how children are taught to be racists, bigots, and why they find themselves believing in angels and virgin births well into adulthood.

  9. CATE: Obvious troll is obvious.

But were you not obvious, I would tell you that the reason Christians get targeted, especially in western society and chiefly in America, is because the fundamentalist right wing bullshit they support in governing this country is infused with their putrid, lazy theology. That vapid want-wit said it all: It’s too hard for us. Creationism is just easier, etc. They cannot deal with the fact that the universe is immensely complicated, that the forces that govern the fabric of the universe take a lifetime to just barely grasp in a meaningful way. They are proud of their stupidity. They are not even all that studious of the faith they claim to keep, else they would understand that nearly all of Abrahamic theology’s texts detail a process to repair a broken relationship between man and his diety and is most certainly not a science text book. You can see a few minute details about the nature of electricity in a dvd player’s instruction manual. Would you give that to a would be electrician and assume him educated after reading it? Would you let him work on your house? If they are too dumb to understand highschool biology and physics, what on Earth makes you think these wastes of good embryonic stem cells have any business dealing with equally complex market forces? How about international affairs where forging alliances is not the same as having friendships? These people are stumped by the concept of a dinosaur! When they learn to keep their theology out of their government, then I’ll leave them alone. Until then, the vapid in all of their forms, are my toilet.

  10. Disgusting, fucking disgusting. Those poor kid are screwed for life. Either they keep these false ideas in their heads for the rest of their lives, causing untold amounts of mental damage, or they wake up and realize that their parents are fools, causing untold amounts of mental damage. Look for these kids down the road when they grow up, blowing up abortion clinics or becoming wards of the state. I don’t care what you believe, if you want to persist in being wrong go ahead, but the poor kids. Can we please deem religion as a mental disease, so the state can take these kids away? This type of child abuse is just fucking disgusting.

  11. What I find narrow and ignorant are the comments from posters here who could never best Ken Hamm, and myriad others like him, in a debate, but nevertheless are certain that he is the one both brainwashed and doing the brainwashing. Perhaps his brain is actually washed and is therefore clear thinking enough to not believe the evolutionists dogma. Evolutionism is bankrupt with or without the God construct and Creationism as a replacement. It makes a piss poor theory and in fact is a moving target, as theories go, in a constant state of (ironically) evolutionary flux as attempts are made to harmonize it with our increasing knowledge base. In many ways it barely resembles what it was just a few years ago. But it’s the Christians who are stupid, ignorant and dense. Rrrrrriiiiiigght.

  12. Ken Hamm doesn’t know how to debate. He just gushes a lot of bullshit and hopes people won’t notice.

And clearly your grasp of science is pretty piss-poor if you don’t understand that scientific theories, in general, tend to change over time as we better understand the phenomena they explain. As for Christians being stupid, ignorant, and dense… well, you make a pretty good positive argument that they are just based on your comments here.

  13. If they are too dumb to understand highschool biology and physics, what on Earth makes you think these wastes of good embryonic stem cells have any business dealing with equally complex market forces?

That’s the problem with these bozo’s. They can understand it, but they CHOOSE to avoid learning about it. So safe they are in their own delusion that anytime they get close, the reset button is tripped and they get away. That’s what indoctrination is.

  14. it’s the Christians who are stupid, ignorant and dense.

    You’ve got it!

  15. in fact is a moving target, as theories go, in a constant state of (ironically) evolutionary flux as attempts are made to harmonize it with our increasing knowledge base.

Thats how science works. Theories change based on new information, it allows our knowledge to change and grow as we find new facts or find mistakes.

Science is made to change, the bible is fixed in place and never altered no matter how well its proven wrong. The best they can do is come up with bullshit excuses/explanations of their fuckups by saying things like “behemoth is a dinosaur”. They even make songs that repeat it over and over and over so its burned into their brain.

As they said before “God said it, I believe it, that settles it!”, despite the fact that NONE of them have ever seen, heard or touched “God” and they’re basing their “knowledge” on a book written by primitive tribesmen 1700 years ago that believed the earth was at the center of the universe.

  16. i hate god writes…

Can we please deem religion as a mental disease, so the state can take these kids away? This type of child abuse is just fucking disgusting.

As much as I dislike what religion does to people’s brains and common sense I’m far from being ready to label it a full blown mental disease that would justify taking people’s kids away from them. There are plenty of believers in general, and Christians in particular, who have no problems reconciling their beliefs with science. I’m good friends with more than a few of them and if believing in a God helps them get through the day and they’re not pushing anti-scientific bullshit as a result then far be it for me to take that security blanket away from them.

The best thing we can do is to remain vigilant and do our part to ensure that good educational standards are set by our local schools and call out the bullshit when we see it. We won’t convince everyone that it’s bullshit, but we’ll reach more than we would if we just sit passively by and let the bullshit flow unchallenged.

Thats exactly what they are teaching their kids to do. Unfortunately for them that teaches kids to undermine authority when they believe its incorrect, it backfires pretty hard when the kids with a functioning brain begin to think for themselves.

  18. Those poor repressed Christians.

    Bawwwww.

Who said “If you don’t pray in my school, I won’t think in your church”? Or something like it?

  19. This guys are terrible. I bet that they also think that the first amendment is about the fredom to exercise their religon. I´m an atheist, ergo i´m really inteligent and i know that first amendment states that only people who think like me have freedom of speech heh.

  20. Les, or if you prefer, stupidevilbastard,

I certainly do understand the way scientific theories are formed and postulated. The problem with evolution, as a theory, is that the scant few examples of any that have undergone such major revisions, and particularly so rapidly, have been discarded, as this one, by all scientific measures, should be. I won’t bother to re-iterate any of my previous post for dramatic emphasis, or to resort to your predilection for personal attacks, but you are practicing the literary equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming loudly, if you think Ken Hamm is peddling bullshit and hoping people won’t notice. His ministry is predicated on the hope that people will learn to discern real evidence and science from the commonly accepted evolutionary myths. Toward that end he’s obviously making at least some headway. Bully for him, and too bad for you I suppose.

  21. Personal attacks? You don’t consider calling someone a “slut” a personal attack?
Most scientists agree that evolution is a fact. Hamm is in the big money making minority of 2%. The scientific debates about evolution ended with Gregor Mendel’s theory of genetics. The debate about evolution that occurs today takes place in the political and religious arenas. The science is settled, but the bullshit continues.
We still have Holocaust deniers, they believe they have evidence, and they should have the right to their opinions. But people who teach Holocaust denial to children are still fiends. They are intellectual terrorists, and so are people like Hamm. It was just a month ago that they found yet another “missing link”; the fossil evidence is there, DNA evidence is there; but the bible-blinded will not give up. Too much money in spreading creationism.

  22. Jeff, it’s clear that you don’t understand at all. The fact that you continue to claim Evolution to be a myth is proof enough of that. Get your head out of your ass and read some books from actual biologists for a change.

  23. I urge you guys to hear me when I say: this is not Christianity. I am a christian, a devout one, and I believe in evolution (Though I don’t claim to know all the details in the slightest). I truly am sorry for what a lot of people say in the name of God that has nothing to do with true religion and is merely pushing their own bigoted beliefs on everyone else.
If anyone took so much effort as to crack the bible every once in a while, they might notice that the terms ‘night’ and ‘day’, as well as the ‘sun’ and ‘moon’ did not exist until the 3rd day; therefore, I find it hard to believe that these days were literal 24-hour cycles. Also, if you know much at all of the bible, you might notice that it was originally in Hebrew, then translated to Greek, then distributed to god only knows how many other languages; the word ‘day’ in our bible most likely doesn’t mean an exact 24-hour period. I happen to have found out that the word we translate as ‘day’ actually literally means ‘a period of time with a beginning and an end’, and therefore could have been millions or even billions of years long.
While I find it far-fetched that single-celled organisms eventually turned into all the species alive today (For example, explain the creation of gender via evolution from an asexually reproducing creature), I also believe that monkeys and humans share a common ancestor. Note, this does not mean monkeys evolved INTO humans, merely that somewhere back on the ancestral chain, the ones who eventually engendered modern primates may very well have been far more similar to our own ancestors than many fundamentalists would like to admit.
But that’s not even the point; evolution has nothing to do with Christianity at its core; Christianity is about the fact that men are sinners and cannot redeem themselves and only by faith through Christ can we find redemption. Please note that this is not an evangelistic message in the slightest; I don’t hold out any hope to convert anyone through a comment on an internet message board. I merely state this to point out the fact that being a Christian has 0% to do with whether or not evolution is true; I believe that God made the world into what it is today and whether he made it magically appear in six days or used millions of years to let the rules he set in place take their course is really of no concern to me, or anyone who truly understands what it’s all about.
Please don’t let the opinions of these cultists and extremists color your opinion of every christian out there; we’re not all the slobbering neanderthals that seems to be the common perception nowadays, and we don’t all want to pick a fight with everyone who disagrees with us in the slightest. Please, for the love of God and everything that is holy (literally) stop wasting your breath over the most meaningless possible quibbles extant; you’re all missing the point.

  24. he problem with evolution, as a theory, is that the scant few examples of any that have undergone such major revisions

That shows people are LEARNING. The entire foundation of science is about finding the truth through observation and testing. Believing the bible is The Absolute Truth is not proof of anything, its faith.
Faith doesn’t allow change from new discoveries, its brainwashing to make people give up and accept the easiest answer they can think of; “God did it”.

If dinosaurs existed before man and the earth is only 6000 years old, why are dinosaur bones found in rock and why doesn’t rock form around modern animals so quickly?

Why is it acceptable that a “loving” god murdered the first born child of thousands of people, obliterated two cities and once killed nearly every living thing on the planet?

Why is it acceptable that a “loving” god obliterated two cities because two men wanted to butt-fuck his angels, yet hundreds of boy-raping priests are exempt from any punishment?

The simple fact of it all is that religion is a business, a very high income one. Teaching children that God’s Word is the Only word teaches them to be sheep of his flock, and ensures they will give their tithes to the church and the church will always have power over them.

  25. Sadly the first thing that came to mind as I started to watch this post was the the rocking, bowing, and chanting of people sitting on prayer rugs. Each person is allowed to follow his own beliefs but this mass coverage of children’s minds is not right!

  26. Actually, as much as a disagree with them, it looks like they are in a church. I wouldn’t mind what they are doing as long as the kids are taught scientific theory in school… but we all know that’s not the case in many places.

The church I went to talked about creation and genesis (though not quite undermining like the above) but when I was in school and learned about evolution I saw something that made sense.

  27. Poort Jeff. Such a complete lack of understanding of what a scientific theory is. It’s not a half-baked SWAG (Scientific Wild-Assed Guess). It’s not the same as what you mean when you say “I have a theory about that.” Go read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_as_theory_and_fact which gives a fairly clear definition.

It’s a Theory because it is widely accepted by the scientific community as true. It is fact. See here: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/evolution-fact.html See how that works?

Now, try proving anything in the bible as fact. But I’m going to suggest that you go back to original texts, since things get lost in translation. You do realize that the bible wasn’t written in English, right? (most evangelicals don’t really realize that.)

Evolution is not some crackpot made-up conjecture. Of course, no two religions can seem to agree on what the bible actually says — that ONE BOOK on which all of their religions are based — about any given subject. So since the entire scientific community agrees on evolution, why don’t you all come back when you can agree on what your book says. Ok?

  28. Don’t be fooled into thinking all christians are creationists. As a priest I obviously believe that God brought the whole universe into being. However, as an firm ‘believer’ in the theory of evolution I feel that science can give us amazing insights into Gods creation.
The other week my 8 year old daughter told me that God created the world in 7 days and that we were all related to adam and eve. I felt decidedly uncomfortable, and i will strive make sure she has an open mind and is able to make her own choice whether to believe or not as she reaches adulthood.

  29. Rev James: That’s what I find confusing: You believe in Evolution (firmly you say), yet get uncomfortable when your daughter said the Earth was created in 7 days. What’s to get uncomfortable about? You didn’t just spring into being as a reverend. I’m assuming you’ve thought about this before in order to accept evolution. I admire your decision to let her make up her own mind, but why not give her your opinion? 8 years old should be enough for her to get the gist of it. I gave up religion when I was nine.

I’m really curious and not just trying to poke you with a stick. How DO you reconcile Genesis and Evolution? What’s the “official” version in your mind?

  30. How DO you reconcile Genesis and Evolution?

Evolution does not attempt to explain how life began, it only explains how it got to where it is today.

  31. Sometimes I lose my will to live, ’cause stuff like this…
And I find it amusing how the “best nation on earth” has such a high moronic population, citizens of the U.S.A. should really do something about it, I mean, we in underdeveloped countries got a better grasp of reality and science that you guys, it almost concerns me.

  32. Well, I’m not really too worried. Thing is, I live in the bible belt and grew up in the bible belt and in the church (although it was a pretty sane one, no Jesusaurus Rex). Most people I know grew up in the church, or went to church at some point, and nearly all of them are atheist, agnostic, or moderate believers (i.e. believe in God/religion, but lead pretty normal lives).
Just like me and all these other people, these kids are going to grow up and eventually realize that the bible and all this creationism stuff is a bunch of nonsense. Kids this age also believe in Santa and the tooth fairy, not to mention a large amount of other stupid stuff. If you still believe this by the time you grow up, you tend to be a strange person just like the adults in the video.

  33. mean, we in underdeveloped countries got a better grasp of reality and science that you guys, it almost concerns me.

We in developed countries have more time on our hands to come up with stupid shit, but the developing world isn’t off the hook. Witch hunts, people executed for allegedly performing magic, etc… Those stories aren’t coming from the US. Developing countries also have a habit of breeding dictators who have fewer brains than an lobotomized cabbage.

For all I bitch about people like Kenn Hamm…. I’d much rather have him to deal with than the alternatives.

  34. the problem with the bible its written by man and man can be dicived and can be wrong

  35. Religion = control over those who refuse to think for themselves.

There is no god. Get over it.

  36. Wow , how can people believe in this type of stuff?
    It’s insane.
Is there any hard-evidence or proof of a god? No.
Is there evidence of SCIENCE and is there such things as ‘carbon dating’ which you people can’t understand? Yes.
Get your facts straight… It’s not like you have a phD in science ;P.

  37. You don’t need to know much about either sides view to decipher that brainwashing is systematically happening here. Let the children decide for themselves.

  38. I believe that God made the world into what it is today and whether he made it magically appear in six days or used millions of years to let the rules he set in place take their course is really of no concern to me, or anyone who truly understands what it’s all about.

Christianity is about the fact that men are sinners and cannot redeem themselves and only by faith through Christ can we find redemption.

The earth has been around for about 4.5 billion years, perhaps a little more. Humans have been around for maybe 250,000 years. Civilization is perhaps 8 – 10,000 years old. To believe that your god took all that time simply to end up with humans is akin to believing that the Eiffel tower was built specifically to hold up the layer of paint atop its highest point.

I have to point out that your god apparently simply allowed biologically modern humans to live out their lives in fear and pain, most dying of their teeth, for a hundred thousand years before he ever deigned to get in touch with us, if your holy book isn’t wholly lies. Religion is just so… provincial. Reality is so much grander than anything a bunch of bronze age goatherds could dream up.

While I find it far-fetched that single-celled organisms eventually turned into all the species alive today (For example, explain the creation of gender via evolution from an asexually reproducing creature)

Why is it far-fetched? Cells are cells are cells pretty much. Cells divide. There is nothing stopping a single celled organism becoming a two celled organism simply by not splitting apart following mitosis. From that point, there is no end to the complexity possible.

As for the evolution of sex I don’t see any reason why you think it is so difficult. Bacteria engage in a form of sex (called conjugation). Swapping genes is relatively common in the whole of biology, and so I don’t see why it’s so hard for you to get your head around.

  39. I love the ‘debate’ people try to have after watching a video like this. I think we’re all missing the point creationism is advocating dated textbooks.
Would you be comfortable if your doctor was treating you after only studied the first edition of gray’s anatomy(1858)?
Remember it was still popularly believed that bleeding a patent would treat a variety of illnesses.

Also another point many people do not distinguish between. FACT and SCIENCE. No science is fact and things will be modified, if you don’t believe me look at your copy of the bible. Is it printed in english?
Theories will change, they will be updated. There is no perfect scientific theory.

  40. You know what I find funny as much as you ignorant evolutionist think you know everything. You have even less evedence then the christians to support your theory. Even Darwan didn’t belive that shit at the end of his life. I am not says I belive it the bible. I Just saying its just as likly were were created by UFO’s and dropped here as an exparement. I challenge any of you to take a seriouse look at creationism before you randomly start trashing it. There is alot of scientific evedance that does support what the bible says

The problem is that they don’t teach more then just evolution in school,. Most evolutionist don’t have a clue what else is taught in creationism, or any other Theory, remeber there is no proof just Theorys. Until you can prove it, let people decide what they want to beleive.
