Daniel Hauser is now cancer free.

You guys remember the story back in May about a teenager named Daniel Hauser and his attempt to avoid chemotherapy in favor of “alternative” treatments for his cancer? At one point, after a judge had ruled that that he had to undergo chemo, he and his mother went into hiding in defiance of the court because, they claimed, the treatment was a violation of their religious beliefs.

Eventually the pair turned themselves in and agreed to continue Daniel’s chemotherapy. Now reports are that Daniel has had his last treatment and is cancer free.

Daniel gained national attention when he stopped treatment after one session in February and fled, citing his religious beliefs. After he returned, he underwent court-ordered chemo to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma, then started radiation therapy.

Family spokesman Dan Zwakman tells KSTP-TV everything is going as planned. A call to the family’s home from The Associated Press rang unanswered Saturday.

The article is very brief and has nothing on whether the family continues to believe that chemotherapy is ineffective in spite of the fact that their son is in good shape as a result of it. As noted above, they’re not talking to the press about it. It’s almost certain Daniel would’ve died had he not undergone chemotherapy, but I doubt the family recognizes or even appreciates that fact. If anything they’d probably say that it was God’s will, and not the chemotherapy, that cured their son.

  1. The way the FOX headline is written allows for an interpretation that he’s cancer-free BECAUSE he fled chemo, for those who don’t click the story.

Typical media ambiguity. Perhaps unintentional, but whatever.

  2. BTW

These stories, I’m afraid, are more common then people think. Why, here in ABQ 4 or 5 people prayed over a choking, yes choking, baby and it died. They were at a hotel attending some revivalist convention.

…It barely made the local news.. The DA said they’d look into it..

    Wow. Just wow.

  3. I just came to know about Daniel today. I guess some people entertain stupid beliefs that defy convention and they don’t realize how harmful it is to their friends and loved ones.

@legacyabq: I feel for the baby whose life was lost thanks to some mindless stupidity on the part of its ‘loved’ ones.

  4. Your question: “What the fuck is wrong with you people?” That’s exactly my question too. And I appreciate the anger in your question–which reflects my anger as well. It’s one thing that people are ignorant of medical technology, but I’m sure that this was thoroughly explained to the Hauser family. Religious indoctrination has this amazing ability to block rationality. Can we consider religion a mental illness? Is religion any different than LSD or other drugs that cause bizarre behavior?

It doesn’t help, either, when “educated” people like Philip Elbert (court-appointed atty for Daniel) to dispute the judge’s wise decision. So what does this attorney think now?

The other point to your last paragraph is information that is missing from news reports. Are journalists so mindless that they don’t think to inquire further–as you did? Or is this deliberate because the journalists are victims of religious indoctrination themselves and strive to protect religion?

Thanks for giving us a follow-up to the Hauser case.

  5. He should NOT have been forced to take chemo. There are many alternative cures for Lymphoma none of which need involve religion. But we came to this country to have freedom of religion and that involves what you do with your own body and that of your children. There are religions who believe that it is wrong to use medical intervention and it is their right to do so and no one should try to create or enforce any laws that infringe on those freedoms. What if someone said it was in your child’s best interest to be fed feces everyday and that if you didn’t do so they would prosecute you and force it upon your child and may even go so far as to remove the child from your custody as long as they saw fit. Now there are all kinds of good things in feces, never mind the bad things, dogs eat them all the time and only rarely do they suffer as a result. But you say this is different! Dogs were designed to be able to utilize all the good things in feces and not be harmed by the bad but my child is not a dog and most importantly I’m not going to put up with something that is tantamount to rape or slavery by letting my child be force fed feces. I have rights gauranteed by the constitution that protect me and my child from such things. Oh but do you? When a judge can at any time decide to take your child and do ANYTHING with that child he deems fit? Not to mention that chemo has NEVER EVER been proven to be any where near as effective as several alternative methods of fighting lymphoma which by the way also don’t do the permanent damage to the immune system that chemo does but on the contrary support and repair the immune system. LOOK IT UP PEOPLE! GOOGLE and/or youtube alternative cures Lymphoma, check out the Gerson therapy for lymphoma, check out raw veganism or juice feasting’s cure rates, Laetrile/vitamin B17’s cures! Actually READ for YOURSELVES instead of swallowing the BULL the doctors want you to believe to protect their silk lined pockets. I have personally watched several associates, friends and family members take all the different routes to cancer treatment and the ONLY ones who are still here are the ones who didn’t take conventional medical treatment but substituted proven alternative/natural curative methods and none of those had anything to do with religion. Not that religion didn’t comfort some of them during their efforts but it didn’t dictate what they did with their cancers at all. Meanwhile if you want the doctors to use their EXPERIMENTAL UNPROVEN methods on you or your children that is your right. Just google first, just for fun, how many oncologists (that’s the word for cancer doctor) would take chemo or radiation or let their family members do so. Sure they will lie to your face and tell you they would as they will LOSE THEIR MEDICAL LISCENSE if they say otherwise. To simplify your search if any of you are so inclined I will just suggest that you youtube.com Gerson Theray 1 and go on through each one to number 9. Also watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCHnJtflM00&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL and after watching it watch the succeeding videos through number 8 which can be found by clicking the down arrow beneath the title above the video. Then you may want to order one or both of their books. The China Study is a good book too as well as the movie coming out all over the country right now called “Forks over Knives”. Then there is the book and online videos, “World without Cancer”. This is all of course if you want to cure and prevent cancer not just treat it at GREAT expense both to health and wallet.

  6. Ooo. We’ve got a live one who doesn’t know how to use paragraph breaks. This should be fun to wade through.

Let’s see what kind of hilarity we have here:

    Such as?

But we came to this country to have freedom of religion and that involves what you do with your own body and that of your children. There are religions who believe that it is wrong to use medical intervention and it is their right to do so and no one should try to create or enforce any laws that infringe on those freedoms.

So you don’t think that there is a compelling state interest in protecting children from their parent’s stupidity? What if the religion in question said the proper way to treat a child’s illness was to beat it out of him with a rod? Would you be OK with that? What if the religion said he should be treated by being bitten by poisonous snakes? Would you be OK with that? What if the cure involved sacrificing one of the child’s perfectly healthy limbs, say his right arm, to God to cure him? Would you be OK with that?

What if someone said it was in your child’s best interest to be fed feces everyday and that if you didn’t do so they would prosecute you and force it upon your child and may even go so far as to remove the child from your custody as long as they saw fit. Now there are all kinds of good things in feces, never mind the bad things, dogs eat them all the time and only rarely do they suffer as a result. But you say this is different! Wow, that is all kinds of incoherent nonsense. The first problem with this argument is the fact that medical decisions aren’t made based on what dogs do or don’t do. They’re made based on whether or not a particular treatment actually does anything beneficial. The irony, of course, is that Western science has never found anything medicinally beneficial about the consumption of feces, but there are plenty of other cultures that have long standing medical “practices” (and I use that term very loosely) that involves the application of, and sometimes the consumption of, various animal (and sometimes human) feces. If you had grown up in one of those cultures you’d probably have no problem with your kid being fed feces as a treatment.

I won’t even go into the silliness about a dog being designed to “utilize the good stuff in feces” as it’s clear you have no idea why dogs eat feces.

I have rights gauranteed by the constitution that protect me and my child from such things.

    Really? Can you name them?

Oh but do you? When a judge can at any time decide to take your child and do ANYTHING with that child he deems fit?

Clearly you have no understanding of the legal limits of Judges either.

Not to mention that chemo has NEVER EVER been proven to be any where near as effective as several alternative methods of fighting lymphoma which by the way also don’t do the permanent damage to the immune system that chemo does but on the contrary support and repair the immune system. Ah, now we get to the juicy bits. It’s apparent now you’re one of those loony “alternative medicine” types. Hey, do you know what they call alternative medicine that’s been proven to work? “Medicine.”

I have personally watched several associates, friends and family members take all the different routes to cancer treatment and the ONLY ones who are still here are the ones who didn’t take conventional medical treatment but substituted proven alternative/natural curative methods and none of those had anything to do with religion.

And we should accept your claim as true because… why, exactly?

Not that religion didn’t comfort some of them during their efforts but it didn’t dictate what they did with their cancers at all. Meanwhile if you want the doctors to use their EXPERIMENTAL UNPROVEN methods on you or your children that is your right. Just google first, just for fun, how many oncologists (that’s the word for cancer doctor) would take chemo or radiation or let their family members do so. Wow, that’s some funny shit. Speaking of shit, did you know that in Traditional Chinese Medicine human feces is supposedly prepared with licorice as a medicine known as “Radix glycyrrhizae Cum Excremento Hominis Praeparatum”?

As for a world without cancer, ain’t gonna happen. Cancer isn’t a single disease, but a class of diseases that are a side-effect of the processes of life. Some of them have an environmental cause and others are hereditary and depending on the type of cancer and how soon it’s detected modern science does a pretty good job of fighting it. There are things you can do to lower your risk of cancer, but the idea that it’s possible to eliminate the risk altogether is silly.

But hey, you keep plugging away with those natural remedies you have every right to make use of as an adult. If you try them on your kids and they fail, however, you’re probably going to be prosecuted.
