Rachel Maddow on the GOP Miniverse.

If you pay attention the the Republicans it often seems like they’re living in their own little world. A recent Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll seems to indicate that impression may be correct. Not surprisingly we’ve got FOX News to blame for it:

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Spend any amount of time watching FOX News and it’s clear that they’re helping to promote many of the flat out lies that Republicans are shouting at various town halls. All the major news channels have their opinion/editorial shows, Rachel Maddow is one of MSNBC’s, but if you watch the reporting of news outside of those shows it’s clear that the FOX anchors inject their opinions into their reporting quite a bit more than any other network.

It brought to mind the time before cable was available when we had just the big three networks and, if you were lucky, a smattering of UHF channels to choose from. The UHF channels often didn’t have much, if any, news programming so you watched one of the big three to find out what was going on. Now this may just be the fuzzy memory of nostalgia kicking in, but as I recall the big three news programs generally reported the same set of facts on most stories with any editorializing being labeled clearly as such in its own segment. Sure sometimes one network would scoop a story, but overall if you saw a news report on one network the facts would be pretty much the same as either of the other two networks reporting on it.

With the advent of cable and the 24 hour news channel the race to get a story first resulted in a lot more speculation and hearsay showing up in any reporting of something happening right that second. That’s annoying enough, but with the rise of FOX News we’ve moved beyond having to deal with a lot of air time devoted to anchors guessing at what’s happening and scrambling for info to anchors actively trying to spin news stories to match the talking points of one of the two major political parties. Throw in “pundits” that are willing to spout off the most batshit insane bullshit you’ve ever heard from someone who wasn’t wearing a tinfoil hat and you have a recipe for what we have today.

Which isn’t to say that MSNBC and CNN are paragons of TV journalism, but it’s amazing how less misinformed viewers of either of those two networks are compared to the folks who follow FOX News. Consider this survey by Public Policy Polling*PDF file in which of the questions was: “Do you think the Government should stay out of Medicare?”

The results? 39% of respondents said YES! An additional 15% said they weren’t sure. (Note: For those of you who aren’t clear on the issue, Medicare is a government run program. I say this not to the usual SEB audience, but to any morons who might be passing by.)

Now not all of the people who answered yes to that question considered themselves Conservative, some felt they were Liberal or Moderates, but when you break it down by those categories you find that 59% of those who answered “yes” identified themselves as Conservatives. Now it’s possible that some of the people misheard the question and thought they had said “health care” and not “Medicare”—and there’s a part of me that hopes that’s the case—but that’s still a lot of people who don’t know that Medicare is run by the government.

It says something that the pundits on FOX News have made heavy use of the word socialism in addition to suggesting that the Obama administration shares a lot of similarities with the fascist Nazis. Glen Beck alone has made heavy use of Nazi imagery when ranting and crying (literally) over some perceived outrage on the part of Obama. So what do we end up seeing at various town halls across the nation? Angry Republicans with pictures of Obama as Hitler yelling about the socialist programs Obama supports blissfully unaware of the fact that Socialism is pretty much the opposite of Fascism. I guess that’s just a sign of how evil Obama really is that he manages to be two opposing -isms at the same time.

Or perhaps it’s a sign of how fucking clueless your average Republican is these days.

  1. What is the idiotic obsession with Obama’s birth certificate?  You mean their assertion (which is more likely to be correct than not) that he actually is not eligible to be president of the united states?

OK that’s it Jon, you win.  Having a discussion with you is like trying to talk to a dining room table, and I have no interest in it. (h/t Barney Frank)

  2. Lying is a facist tendency, and the your failure to acknowledge that is what is worse then useless.  I didn’t say that everyone who lies is exhbiting facist tendencies.

Wow.. just… wow.  I am in awe.  That is just…. wow.

  3. This thread is good example of the word ” Agenda “

It’s the same with DC Politics. You have a side and you stick to it. You stick to come hell or high water.

When people are so deep into party politics it is darn near impossible to reach any conclusion of logic.

This is why the Republican and Democratic Party as well as the people who follow, are people of personality rather than principle.

Sadly enough this also includes President Obama and probably most of his precedents. But he gets extra points for not just setting on his ass and doing nothing. He is trying and is willing to listen. Which is more than I can say about the Bush administration.

There should be a rule. If you are going to criticize. At least be able to suggest an alternative. If you are not smart enough to to offer, speculate, even imagine a different scenario. A person should consider shutting the fuck up.

That’s why we are born with twice as many ears as mouths.

  4. Forgive me for coming late to the party.

Jon, agree or disagree, I have a bone to pick with the following statement – which you have similarly repeated throughout the thread.

The assertion that Fox News is more inaccurate than other major news network is ludicrous.  Gregory rightly points out at that all news stations have a reasonably high level of inaccuracy and are slanted towards their particular political bias.  He also very rationally suggests that both parties have their strengths and weaknesses, and people are crucifying him for a correct opinion.  The author of is clearly uneducated to suggest that facism and socialism are opposites, (and is clearly a democrat) yet suggests Republicans are stupid?

Anyone that gets their news from FOX is an idiot. Its only entertainment value comes in its absurdity, which is something that Jon Stewart aptly highlights.

FOX News is the company that set the legal precedent that allows for deliberate distortion or falsification of news content in a newscast; the company that was co-founded by a Republican strategist who swore there would be no conflict of interest; the company that gradually weeds out dissenting political opinion (even the token liberals); the company that over 80% of its viewers voted for GW in the 2004 election (sorry, can’t find the polls, although there are plenty of references to them).

When it comes to bias, FOX news is clearly, indisputably, in a class of its own. Even if you take that every other news network tries to be like them, they’re still far behind. FOX is primarily a propaganda network by design.

Equivocating FOX with any other news agency in North America is disingenuous at best.

  5. If lying makes one a Fascist then Jon is Mussolini.
Obama has an entire television network and countless radio shows and websites devoted to misrepresenting or lying about his actions. People lie about Obama for a living, it is their only source of income. They would not be in business if this was a Fascist administration, they would be in prison, at best.
To put it simply, Fascists are Social Darwinists who believe that the strong will dominate the weak. Socialism is egalitarian. They are quite opposite, and you are quite uneducated. I am sure that you can point to some group who has haphazardly tried to mix the two, but Obama aint it.
Jon is indeed a right wing troll, the right needs disinformation agents and they have plenty of them.
And, just to help you out, Jon, there are not two sides to every story. One group can be wrong. Conservatives were wrong when they opposed social security and medicare, and they are wrong now.

  6. Les, you don’t have to argue with me, just like I don’t have to argue with you.  But we do argue with each other, because we believe that the other is wrong.  Unfortunately for you, in this case, you ARE wrong, and I am right.  You are just too scared or stubborn or prideful to admit that you described facism and socialism inappropriately.  I am not ‘parroting’ anything…I’m just speaking the truth.  My only argument is not to just keep repeating I am right—your ONLY argument is to keep repeating that I am wrong.  Swordsbane is not right.  Both you and he are uneducated and uniformed.

  7. decrepitolodfool—Way to quote Barney Frank.  As Rush Limbaugh said, he spends most of his time on Uranus while accusing other people of being from other planets.  Barney Frank is an embarrassment to gays, Americans, and humans…and apparently you are too if you think he is quoteworthy.

  8. @Gregory

“You’ve got your left leaning media and your right leaning media. You have to watch both to find the answer which is somewhere between.”

I think that’s a totally fair comment, Gregory, but when I see the media in the US I don’t think you you get a true left. My observation is that “the left” in America is anything to the left of the right and that includes moderates too.

When that template is wrongly applied to us Brits and our healthcare system gets called “socialist” it rightfully annoys a lot of people. A good level of healthcare is available to everybody and if you don’t like it you can pay more to private companies to be treated differently.

Back to the news, Fox is so biased and opinionated that it smacks of propaganda; that’s what we see when we’re so used to seeing real news and not op-ed.

  9. swordsbane – glad you are in awe….maybe that will make you stop and think about how ridiculous your opinions has been.

  10. Les, I am not an example of the problem you wrote about.  You wrote people that don’t understand medicare and blame that on Fox News, which has nothing to do with what I have been saying.  Your attempts to ridicule me just prove how shallow you are.

  11. Jon, good morning.
Given that I live in a parliamentary democary, perhaps I am missing something about your system.  Specifically, how is the government slowing/eliminating the flow of information regarding the bill? it is a bill isn’t it?  Is it not an 1100 pagish document for any person to read as of June 6th I think.  I can even find a copy on the internet. SOOOOO. How specifially is the Obama administration behaving in a fascist manner to suppress information regard said bill if any citizen can download and read it for themselves.

  12. Paul – My agenda has been to correct Les on his inaccurate description of socialism and facism.  I have since had the task of correcting other idiots who don’t understand it either.  You are correct that you can’t convince someone like Les or other who are so entrenched in their own inaccuracies that they believe they are correct.  Some republicans and some democrats have no principles….their are others that do.  Unfortunately, President Obama would be better off sitting on his ass and doing nothing, because everything he has tried to do he has screwed up.  If you look back at that comments, you will see that I have suggested an alternative scenario, and I am the only one who has suggested an alternative scenario here.  So, if you want to to tell everyone else to shut up, that’s fine by me.

  13. Patness – you are welcome to join in at anytime.  If you will recall, I didn’t say I get my news from Fox News.  But I do think that Fox News is no less accurate than other ‘news’ stations.  When it comes to bias, other ‘news’ stations are at least as biased as Fox, if not more.  Only problem is, the readership of this blog is too confused to see that.

  14. How specifially is the Obama administration behaving in a fascist manner to suppress information regard said bill if any citizen can download and read it for themselves.

It’s simple. The Obama administration is behaving in a Fascist manner because Jon and his handlers Fox News says it is.

Seriously don’t bother trying to get an answer from him. All it boils down to is “I’m right because I say I am.”

See his response re Obama’s nationality for further proof that he’s a fucknut.

  15. @Positive – I haven’t lied about anything.  I don’t know anyone that lies about Obama for a living.  That is not my source of income and I don’t know how anyone could make an income that way.

I am not a right wing troll, and the right doesn’t need disinformation agents.

And Positive, I agree that one group can be wrong—unfortunately, in this case it is the democrats.

Conservatives are TOTALLY ACCURATE when they speak about the problems with this RIDICULOUS HEALTH CARE PLAN!

  16. swordsbane – glad you are in awe….maybe that will make you stop and think about how ridiculous your opinions has been.

And he doesn’t even realize it.  I haven’t seen something like this since I stopped posting on Think Progress.  It’s like seeing a bird pecking itself to death.  You want to help, but you realize there probably isn’t anything you can do.  The poor thing isn’t going to realize you’re trying to help and when you’re gone, he’ll just start up again.

  17. @Julian – Your comment illustrates you haven’t read the whole thread.  It doesn’t boil down to I’m right because I say I am.  It boils down to I am right because of the evidence I provided….see my previous comments.

My response to Obama’s nationality does not prove I am a fucknut…it proves you need to be a little less gullible.

  18. @swordsbane – that analogy does not progress the discussion at all.  It just indicates your inability to do anything but add friovlity to the conversation.

Please explain how you are trying to help.  You have offered little to the conversation other than screaming about how biased a certain news organization is.

  19. @Paul Mackenzie Ross – you are totally out of touch with reality if you don’t think there is a true left in America.  The British healthcare system is hurrendous…they determine the financial value of human life before determing whether to give that person care.

  20. @Lordklegg – Good afternoon.  Please read my other comments as I have already stated in what manner the government is ‘slowing/eliminating’ the flow of information regarding the bill, as well as other matters.

SOOOO, please go back and reread and will see exactly what I am talking about.

    Thanks!

  21. @swordsbane – that analogy does not progress the discussion at all.  It just indicates your inability to do anything but add friovlity to the conversation.

Please explain how you are trying to help.  You have offered little to the conversation other than screaming about how biased a certain news organization is.

And he just keeps going… It’s like he can’t help himself.

Jon: I’ve given up trying to contribute to a a discussion that degenerated both off topic and out of reality.  Whether you’re right or wrong doesn’t matter anymore.  I’m just having fun watching you peck at yourself.  I’ve even got popcorn.

    Please continue.

  22. @swordsbane – I am not “pecking at myself”.  I offer a simple correction to the author and you all fly off the handle.

Of course I am going to keep going in response to your imbecility.  I am enjoying the conversation and am as amused as much as you are.

  23. No no Jon… You’re supposed to laugh and tell me that I’m backing out of the conversation because I know I’ve lost.  You’re supposed to call me a ‘typical liberal’ who never tells the truth and runs and hides when confronted.

Go back and do it again.. and this time, don’t ruin it.

Keep at it fucknut. I haven’t had such a good laugh in ages.

  25. @julian – that’s a shame that you don’t have a very good sense of humor.  I would think your own stupid ideas and the stupid ideas of your liberal comrades would be able to keep you entertained.

  26. The Washington Times quoting Actor Jon Voight today.

“We are witnessing a slow, steady takeover of our true freedoms. We are becoming a socialist nation, and whoever can’t see this is probably hoping it isn’t true. If we permit Mr. Obama to take over all our industries, if we permit him to raise our taxes to support unconstitutional causes, then we will be in default. This great America will become a paralyzed nation.”
    =======================
Thought I would throw this in the already huge pile of shit conversation.

  27. The biggest proof that Jon is an idiot is his complete inability to get all his thoughts out in one or two comments.

  28. Les – You are using faulty logic again, as is typical for you.  Abiding by that logic means that you are a far bigger idiot since it takes you many more posts and comments to get your thoughts out.  I am simply responding to others who have difficulty articulating their thoughts, and processing truths, such as yourself.  If you’ll notice, many of my comments refer back to previous comments which have already answered questions that are arising for a second time.

Nice try, on that one, but better luck next time!

  29. It wouldn’t be a problem if you actually said anything worth reading in your multiple comments, but you don’t. You’re just repeating the same lies over and over again. You’re either clueless or a pathological liar. It’s even odds either way.

  30. Patness – you are welcome to join in at anytime.  If you will recall, I didn’t say I get my news from Fox News.

    I do, indeed, recall.

But I do think that Fox News is no less accurate than other ‘news’ stations.  When it comes to bias, other ‘news’ stations are at least as biased as Fox, if not more.

Something I can readily dispute, as I did in my post, quoting your very statement.

Only problem is, the readership of this blog is too confused to see that.

No, no, they’re not, and neither am I. Fox was founded, it seems, with the express purpose of advancing a conservative viewpoint to their viewers.

Moreover, it was, at one point, the most watched news program in America; support for Bush was stronger only from people who self-identified as Republican. FOX News viewership was the second-strongest indicator of political leanings, overshadowing even things like evangelical Christianity or gun ownership.

This is a point you have seen fit to ignore, and I will not be communicating further on this subject. It is as swordsbane has said: you’re pecking yourself to death.

Also: as regards the socialization of health-care, I will, again, refer the conversation to Tommy Douglas.

Socializing certain key aspects of domestic markets – those that have stiffly high demand, and have become necessity – can more readily prevent the walking disaster we see in health care. The same can be said of Canada’s current offerings on cellular phone networks, or Microsoft or Google.

A well-regulated government (via the voting bloc and their proxies in government) is more accountable than a publicly traded entity, in part, because you already need a well-regulated government to regulate a public business.

If you’re worried about government oversight, I guess you’ll have to get started with that whole “democracy” thing, rather than the oligarchy we currently see.

Besides which, for all the work that has been done to talk about the charity of conservative voters, I’m noticing a very distinct dearth of it when it suddenly becomes possible to help your neighbor and yourself in a single fell swoop.

This is not a coincidence. That, too, can be fairly blamed on FOX News. After all, who on FOX complained when the revised PATRIOT Act was passed? After all, when our rights and freedoms were being directly, deliberately, and deceptively compromised, it was “for our own good”, though no evidence of said good has come to bear.

When socialized health care has demonstrated, tangible benefits for all but the richest members of society, we flee in terror.

Sorry for the long one, folks, but apparently, this just doesn’t speak for itself.

  31. @Les: Any one of my comments is exponentionally more useful than most of the mindless drivel on this blog.  I am not repeating any lies.  I am neither clueless, nor a pathological liar.

You are still unable to realize that you used the concepts of socialism and facism inappropriately.  Maybe if you revised your thoughts on that matter, we could progress towards a more productive conversation.

  32. @Les: Any one of my comments is exponentionally more useful than most of the mindless drivel on this blog.  I am not repeating any lies.  I am neither clueless, nor a pathological liar.

You are still unable to realize that you used the concepts of socialism and facism inappropriately.  Maybe if you revised your thoughts on that matter, we could progress towards a more productive conversation.

    peck-peck-peck

  33. @Patness – you can dispute the accuracy of Fox News, but you have not presented any information which shows it is less accurate than any other new information.

You are mistaken if you think the readership of this blog and yourself is not confused.  You are entrenched in liberalist hype, and you need to get back to the REAL WORLD.

Of course Fox News would be a stronger indicator of political leanings than things like evangelical christianity and gun ownership.  That’s like saying CNN is a stronger indicator of political leanings than sexuality or iq.

You may choose not to communicate further – that is fine with me, you haven’t contributed anything useful.  As I said to swordsbane, I will say to you again, I am not “pecking myself to death” -I am responding to your continued idiocy, and I will continue to do so.

Socialization of healthcare is not the answer!  Not for cell phones, not for google, not for microsoft, not for healthcare.  If you want that to be the answer, get out of America.  America is about capitalism not socialism.

I don’t think the debate is about whether a well-regulated government is more accountale than a publicly traded entity.

The charity of conservative voters is far greater than the charity of liberal voters.  Charity cannot and should not be regulated by the government, which is why socialized anything is a bad idea.  The fact of the matter is that the government is NOT EFFICIENT whereas charitable organizations CAN BE.

Socialized health care will not benefit ANYONE in society.  Not the rich, not the middle class, not the poor.

You seem to be under the impression that FOX news is what is wrong with America, and there are many things that are more damaging, which I suggest we focus on before we deal with Fox and the other networks.

  34. @Les: I’ve been trying to have a productive conversation this whole time.  Unfortunately, your liberal worldview prevents you from seeing things rationally, therefore you must vent about life in your small-minded blog rather than finding real solutions to real problems.

  35. As I said to swordsbane, I will say to you again, I am not “pecking myself to death” -I am responding to your continued idiocy, and I will continue to do so.

Really?? You’ll continue to respond to my idiocy?

    Pickle!

What have you got to say to THAT, eh?

  36. @swordsbane –

Really?? You’ll continue to respond to my idiocy?

    Pickle!

What have you got to say to THAT, eh?

I say you are a small-minded individual in a very sad mental state.

  37. @Les: I am sorry to hear you are having a problem with irony.  Another thing that is hard for me to take is that picture of the man in the upper left hand corner of this side that I can only assume is you.  You are quite unfortunate looking – no wonder you are angry and stupid.  You must have gotten picked on A LOT!

  38. I say you are a small-minded individual in a very sad mental state.

Come on, you can do better than that.  Say something like: “At least you’re admitting that you’re spouting idiocy.”

or maybe: “Maybe you need to relax and don’t do so many drugs when you blog”

or here we go: “‘Pickle’ is such a big word.  Don’t strain yourself.”

    Small minded… sad mental state..

I’ve seen blank screens with more creativity.

Okay, now I’m out of popcorn.  Have fun, little bird.  Don’t hurt yourself.

  39. @swordsbane – I deeply regret I could not provide a response that was good enough for you.  I’ll try so much harder to please you next time.  You might as well have a conversation with yourself since you enjoy your own responses to yourself so much.

  40. Jon if you ever had hopes of being heard, and taken seriously….seriously.

The remark about Les’s looks just finished you.

Anatomical design criticism. What a FUCKING joke.

  41. @Paul: Clearly, none of you liberals on this blog have ANY interest in SERIOUS conversation.  So, if people are going to comment about other being crazy, fucknuts, pathalogical liars, and the like – I’m pretty sure that Lee’s hideousness is fair game.

I’m glad you were amused!  smile
