Rumor has Gillian Anderson as The Rani in next season of “Doctor Who.”

This is totally and completely a rumor, but it would be so cool if it turned out to be true. The folks at Den of Geek report:

Sci-fi goddess Gillian Anderson is being lined up to star in the fifth series of the popular television show Doctor Who, according to the Daily Express.

The actress, best known for playing Dana Scully in The X-Files, is reportedly being lined up to star as The Rani in Matt Smith’s first series as the Time Lord. The Rani is a renegade Time Lady who first appeared in Who during the Eighties’ story Mark of the Rani and returned in Time and the Rani. She was originally played by Kate O’ Mara.

Considering The Doctor is supposed to be the last of the Time Lords it sure seems like there’s quite a few of them popping up, but I’ll let it slide for the awesomeness of the idea of Anderson playing The Rani.

  1. It’s like STNG was here, everyone and their mother is probably lining up to have at least a guest spot on Dr Who.  We probably only hear about it when it’s someone from this side of the pond, or like Stewart, someone who’s already famous here.

Sort of like the Highlander series, except that was just MTV washouts smile

  2. If the Rani returns that will mean TWO Time Lords other than the Doctor are still around. Both of those two are renegade Time Lords… On the other hand, RTD’s Time War supposedly wiped out the Daleks along with the Time Lords, but we’ve seen a metric assload of Daleks.

Don’t forget his clone/daughter.  It was never adequately explained exactly what she was.

  4. Her daughter was a bad copy of a timelord, whether she could regenerate or not was a little unclear, certainly she’s a combination of human and timelord.

Also there was the impression i though that if dalek kaan unlocked the timewar, maybe some timelords could escape or be rescued….
