Christian YouTuber rants on atheists before committing murder-suicide.

This one happened close to home for me. Anthony Powell was a prolific YouTuber known for his misogyny and ant-atheist rants. He attended Henry Ford Community College and last Friday—ironically Good Friday no less—he posted his last YouTube rant before heading to school armed with a shotgun. There he tracked down Asia McGowan, a fellow student whom he had apparently attempted to strike up a relationship with previously, and proceeded to kill her before turning the shotgun on himself:

DEARBORN, Mich.— The man police said is accused of a murder-suicide at Henry Ford Community College left a videotape message on YouTube shortly before the crimes.

Anthony Powell suffered from chronic depression. His mother, Doris Powell said she thought her son would kill himself.

“I’m really thinking about killing myself. I think I am going to do it. I’m just scared.” Powell stated on YouTube.

[…] Police said they got a call about 12:30 p.m. on a report of an assault. En route, they got another report of shots being fired at the college’s MacKenzie fine arts center.

When police arrived, they found theater student Asia McGowan, 20, and Anthony Powell, 28, dead.

Police said Powell used a shotgun to shoot McGowan and himself.

Local 4 has learned the two students had a theater class together.

Reports are that Powell suffered from depression for many years and it doesn’t take many of his videos to see the man was unbalanced. Near as anyone can tell Powell’s religious fanaticism had less to do with his chosen target than his obsession with Asia McGowan. Still watching some of his YouTube clips it’s amazing that he didn’t target an atheist. Here’s a compilation of some of his rants by Think Atheist:

It occurs to me, given the thread DOF started on why Christians are considered the bad guys by some of us, that this is a prime example for consideration.

  1. Most people, including the mentally ill, will assimilate the religious frame of the culture in which they grow up.  I’m not sure what this sad fellow is an example of.

  2. Interesting how he goes on and on about how we atheists are angry and full of hate, yet he’s spewing profanity and obviously angry and full of hatred himself. Contract that with the tone of ThunderFoot, VenomFangX’s “nemesis” on YouTube.

An example of how religious delusions can exacerbate organic brain disorders, at the very least, it would seem.

  4. What does the fact that he was black have to do with anything?

Everything. The way he talked, the way he acted, his body language…it was all stereotypical black male.

  5. What does the fact that he was black have to do with anything?

    Everything.

    Please be more specific.

The way he talked, the way he acted, his body language…it was all stereotypical black male.

What does that have to do with anything other than the fact that he was (stereotypically) black? What point are you trying to make, exactly?

  6. I knew Asia. We went to high-school together. We were never friends but we were cordgal(sic?).

Its always shocking when someone you know dies so unexpectedly. I’m not going to lie and say she was a great person- she was the product of growing up within a Christian Conservative culture and had rather homophobic and Creationist ideals- but she was young and growing. And now, becuase of this man, shes not going to grow anymore. She did not deserve this

The most horrific thing about this is that there is no lesson to be learned here. The fact that Asia was religous is irrelevant. The fact that the killer was religous is irrelevant. (For that matter, so is the fact that he was black. So a sincere and heartfelt “Fuck you” to the racist asshole above.) If anything, this tragedy shows the inherent chaotic nature of this world. There is little- if anything- we can do about it.

  7. Moloch writes: That he was a typical black male gangsta’.

“Typical black male gangstas” are not mentally ill, sexually repressed community college students running around the internet screaming about atheists and evolution, so no, he was not a “typical black male gangsta.”

Moloch writes: Violence and lack of rational thought are normal for their type.

    What’s your excuse?

The possible role of religion in this situation certainly shouldn’t be discounted so quickly, as the content of his videos clearly suggests. Nor, for that matter, should this be chalked up to mental illness so quickly. Both (among others) are likely to have been contributing factors in this situation.

  9. Les wrote: Tyler, ignore Moloch as he’s as bigoted as you suspect him to be.

Yeah, I figured. I was just giving him a thread of benefit of doubt, and he managed to hang himself with it.

I’m still trying to get my head around his (her?) amusing choice of signatures though.

  10. And they say us non-believers are needlessly violent…

I might have missed cause I couldn’t sit through his cocky condescending bullshit, but what was he trying to accomplish with his attack?  This is why Christians are sheep, they are drones, they serve no greater purpose than to serve as an example to the rest of us as to how NOT to act, with a few very minor exceptions.

As for the above comments, I’ve seen many intellegent and capable black people, as well as people of every race who are stronger, smarter, more clever and intuitive than I am, excellence knows no skin color, though popular culture can certainly winnow through the selection.  And yes, this world is Chaos, a rat race, natural selection, get to the top or die trying, whatever that top may be.

However, the Christian element to the killer’s psychology definately aided his zealous notions of ‘right and wrong’ and how to act on them.  Personally, morals and right and wrong are two of the biggest jokes in the whole world, without exception.  Thats all, but I do feel that i should share my inital reaction when I saw this post…

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I’m still trying to get my head around his (her?) amusing choice of signatures though.

It’s because on occasion, he likes to play “devil’s advocate” to reality.

  12. Well I don’t think monkeys believe in God, so I guess I’d be proud to be associated with monkeys…. as long as I can fling my poo at Christians.. smile

  13. Some wonderful Christians have started scattering comments throughout YouTube -on her channel, even- that God allowed this to happen to punish her for atheist views.

  14. I’m not aware that she was an atheist. I’ve not watched many of her videos, but I didn’t get that impression from what I did see. That would certainly add a new wrinkle to this story.

  15. I don’t have any information to say either way. I considered the source (people who would consider that appropriate, though of course I couldn’t tell if they were holding “God hates fags” signs) and thought it likely bullshit.

  16. For fundies, it is sometimes not enough to say you believe in God.  You have to accept their interpretation or you are a false believer, and that might as well be an atheist.  I’m not sure they would trouble themselves with the distinction in any case.  Certainly not if they would stoop to hateful comments about someone who was tragically killed.

  17. Moloch’s right. Kudos for saying what we all feel—and not just being bigots ourselves when we whip out the “zomg racist” sticks.

Remember, when people slap labels on others, it’s insensitive and insulting—especially from those dirty homophobes, racists, and sexists!

Don’t stick labels of prejudice on people you bastard, white, commie bigot!

  18. By the way Les, don’t you find the irony of your hypocrisy by being dismissive with “lawl bigot” when you rant about christians doing the same to you amusing? Hmm?

It’s not a label of prejudice when the person it’s applied to has proven it to be true.

By the way Les, don’t you find the irony of your hypocrisy by being dismissive with “lawl bigot” when you rant about christians doing the same to you amusing? Hmm?

Please show me the entry where I ranted about such a thing.

  20. 22. Trust me, 1kenny30, it doesn’t take crazy people to make your religion look bad. All you have to do is read the Bible for that.
