“Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” is going to suck major ass.

At least if the trailer is anything to go by as it has finally hit the net. Not only is the martial arts action mediocre looking at best, but not one of the characters from the video game is recognizable with the possible exceptions of Vega (because he has a mask on and claws) and Chun-Li (because she’s played by a woman). Who the fuck the rest of those people are supposed to be is beyond me. Check it:

On the off chance that IGN’s embed code has somehow managed to not embed the trailer like it’s supposed to you can also see it here If you really want to, but all you really need to know is that the truly awful 1994 Street Fighter: The Movie staring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Col. Guile and Raul Julia—in the last role he would play before his death—as M. Bison looked more like the video game than this movie does. The guy they’ve got playing M. Bison this time around, Neal McDonough, doesn’t even come close to looking like the character and Chun-Li, played by Kristin Kreuk, must have been reading Thin Thighs in 30 Days because her greatest asset, if you’ll pardon the pun, is missing from her body in this version.

Not that I’ve ever understood why the movie studies keep trying to turn fighting games into movies. Mortal Kombat had at least some background story to it that you could work into a film, but Street Fighter has never had much of a story in any of the iterations of the game. It was people beating the shit out of each other in random locations for no apparent reason. You’d think that whoever decided to make a movie focused on one of the more popular characters would at least try to pick an actress who has the same physique as the character in the game so that horny gamer dudes would have some rationalization for going to see the movie. Angelina Joelie as Laura Croft was an inspired choice as she at least looked the part. Kristin Kreuk, not so much.

  1. I’m not sure if you listen to or regularly visit 1up.com but it was sadly sold to UGO/Hearst today and over 30 of the key employees were laid off immediately including the entirety of the 1up show, and everybody but Garnet Lee on 1up yours. There will also be no more EGM magazine. For those who are aware of what made 1up special namely, the people they fired today, it is truly a sad turn of events right out of left field.
    Among people fired:
    Shane Betanhausen
    James Mielke
    Jay Fresh
    John Davidson
    Matt Chondranaut
    ect ect.

  2. Not that I think that the game’s plot would make for a great movie, but this Chun Li movie looks like an utterly forgettable generic action movie.

I’ve not subscribed in years, but am saddened by the cancellation of EGM.  I’m not sure how it’s been more recently, but I recognize some of those names from when EGM was the best console gaming mag around.
