Marvel Studios announces release date for “Iron Man 2” and other upcoming films.

Well that didn’t take long. One really strong weekend barely over with and Marvel Studios is already announcing a sequel to Iron Man according to the folks at /Film:

Hot off the $100 million opening of Iron Man (nice job Steve!), the ever powerful Marvel Studios opened its war chest up today, revealing the company’s in-house feature roll out through 2011. Here’s what it looks like…

2010

April 30th: Iron Man 2

June 4th: Thor (directed by Matthew Vaughn)

2011

May 6th: The First Avenger: Captain America

July (day N/A): The Avengers

So, two Avengers films in 2011, eh? Unprecedented. DC’s Justice League is bummed. In addition to the line-up above, Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man is still in the planning stages at the studio, and obviously June brings us The Incredible Hulk, followed by Punisher: War Zone in December.

Let’s hope the rest of them are half as good as Iron Man turned out to be.

  1. Actually, given the rewrite of the Hulk over the Ang Lee film that everyone seemed to hate (I thought it was good…), and the “secret” ending of Iron Man, it looks a lot like these movies will be modeled after the extremely awesome Ultimates (Ultimate Avengers that is).

There was an issue of the Ultimates in fact where the team was discussing who would play each of them in the movie, and at the very least, Nick Fury chimed in that Samuel Jackson would be the one to play him (perhaps because the character was actually modeled after Jackson?).  Then at the end of Iron Man, who do we see but the Man himself in a really short cameo introducing himself as Nick Fury.  I’m a total comic book nerd (in case you couldn’t guess), and this whole thing has me pretty excited.

  2. I’m a Huge comic book geek…and do you know what? I went to the midnight showing and freaking LEFT before I could see the coolio Cameo by Sam the Man as Nick Fury (which I believe is one HELLUVA awesome choice, BTW)

both my husband and I have been kicking ourselves all freakin’ day. Especially after we left COMPLAINING that the rumor was totally not true—there was no SAM. SEE?!?! I need my geek card revoked.

I’d say there is indeed only one man who can play Nick Fury, but then I remember the Hoff’s awe inspiring performance and I start to wonder…

  4. I like the idea of coming up with the sequel before a crappier director takes it on and ruins it.
