Pastor D. James Kennedy kicks the bucket. Good riddence to bad rubbish.

It seems Megachurch pioneer and Coral Ridge Ministries founder D. James Kennedy finally found out if there’s a God:

Kennedy took the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale from a congregation of 45 in 1959 to a megachurch of nearly 10,000 members today.

He also founded the Center for Christian Statesmanship in Washington, organizing Capitol Hill Bible studies and other events that attracted top government officials and encouraged them “to embrace God’s providential purpose for this nation.”

In 1974, Kennedy started Coral Ridge Ministries, his radio and TV outreach arm, which now claims a weekly audience of 3.5 million. Kennedy’s TV show “The Coral Ridge Hour,” airs on more than 400 stations and four cable networks and is broadcast to more than 150 countries on the Armed Forces Network, his ministry says. Last year, the National Religious Broadcasters association inducted him into their Hall of Fame.

I will not miss the man one bit. He exemplifies all that is wrong with the far-right Christian movement as shown in these examples from the folks at Right Wing Watch:

Separation of Church and State

“There are some who would accuse us of trying to Christianize America.  Am I trying to Christianize America?  You bet your boots I am!” (Broadcast, 7/2/1985)

“As the vice-regents of God, we are to bring His truth and His will to bear on every sphere of our world and our society. We are to exercise godly dominion and influence over our neighborhoods, our schools, our government… our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors – in short, over every aspect and institution of human society.” (Christian Science Monitor, 3/16/2005)

“I trust that the day is soon coming when there will be someone who’ll be willing to take the fight all the way to the Supreme Court and to this godless, atheistic, evolutionary, amoral, collectivist,  socialistic, communistic religion right out of the public system of our nation.” (10/14/84)

Kennedy also said that the idea of the separation of church and state is an erroneous one and is a “huge axe which is being used to demolish every vestige of Christianity in this nation.”  (10/27/85).

Gays

“With other dangerous and contagious diseases, all sorts of efforts are made to identify those carrying the disease, and to minimize their contact with the public. And yet, here we have homosexual rights groups working day and night to make sure AIDS victims ARE NOT IDENTIFIED! … Until action is taken, AIDS victims are free to infect anyone …” (Newsletter, 1989)

Another newsletter item featured a photograph of very young children under the headline,  “SEX WITH CHILDREN? HOMOSEXUALS SAY YES!” The newsletter went on to assert that “Adult sex with children has been a crucial component of the homosexual movement all along.”

“Whatever four members of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts may say, the intimate coupling of two men or two women is not marriage. It is a pale and misshapen counterfeit that will only serve to empty marriage of its meaning and destroy the institution that is the keystone in the arch of civilization. … If homosexuals win the right to ‘marry,’ expect further similarly argued claims challenging legal barriers to polygamy, bestiality, and child marriage.” (Center for Reclaiming America for Christ, 10/2003)

Other Quotations

“We need to do something about one of the great impediments to freedom in the world. I speak not of the Politboro, but of the radical liberals in the House of Representatives in this country who have passed laws cutting off aid to the freedom fighters in Angola…who have cut off aid to the Contras and are doing everything in their power to keep freedom fighters from being successful. These acts are absolutely unconscionable and border on treason. To have the gall to first pass a law making such acts illegal and then declare those who favor them are supporting illegal activities.” (2/3/1985).

“Hitler and Nazi Germany is only the kindergarten of evil whereas Soviet Russia is the graduate school.”  (9/15/1985).

“The President has kept his promise. He pledged to nominate justices who ‘will strictly interpret the Constitution and will not use the bench to write social policy.’ John Roberts is, by all accounts, a judge who will hear cases and issue opinions in complete faithfulness to the text of the Constitution and the original intent of the Framers. He will not legislate from the bench.” (Center for Reclaiming America, 7/19/2005)

“To put it simply, no Darwin, no Hitler. … We have had 150 years of the theory of Darwinian evolution, and what has it brought us? Whether Darwin intended it or not,  millions of deaths, the destruction of those deemed inferior, the devaluing of human life, increasing hopelessness; Darwin’s theory has been deadly, indeed. … The time has come to recognize that evolution is a bad idea and should be, frankly, discarded into the dustbin of history.” (2006)

Jerry Falwell is gone and now D. James Kennedy, it’s starting to turn out to be a bumper crop this year for God’s harvest of right-wing nutjobs. Personally I wouldn’t be upset if the trend were to continue.

I’m pretty sure the “destruction of those deemed inferior” was happening way back when the Israelites invaded and slaughtered the untold thousands who lived in the lands that their god had promised them.  I could be wrong, but I think that happened a few millenia before Charles Darwin or Hitler were born.  And I don’t think I really need to point out that the “good guys” were the ones doing the slaughtering back then.

  2. To put it simply, No Franklin, No Bush.
Hmm not going to convince the Right with that.

    How about
    No Washington, No Al Qaeda.
    No Revere, No Watergate.

  3. No Jesus, know peace? Oh, wait, I think that one is taken.

As one of those aforementioned homosexuals, I feel somewhat incomplete now because I have no desire to have sex with children. Does that make me a bad homo?

  4. No, but it would make you a bad Republican.

    That made me laugh hysterically!

To put it simply, no Darwin, no Hitler

Yup! Cause we all know religion never killed no one.

  5. Hmm… I’m reminded of Christopher Hitchens’ comment when asked if he thought Jerry Falwell was going to heaven:
“No. And I think it’s a pity there isn’t a hell for him to go to.”

  6. I for one will miss the little weasel.  I have watched his show for years. He was the perfect advertiser for the politcal rightwing christian agenda. His show was a stage for such angelic souls as Ann Coulter and such theological giants as Dan Quail. His Dali Lama like humility reaches to us from the grave in this excerpt from his web site today

“I am not going to be dead. I will be more alive than I have ever been in my life, and I will be looking down upon you poor people who are still in the land of dying and have not yet joined me in the land of the living. And I will be alive forevermore, in greater health and vitality and joy than ever, ever, I or anyone has known before.”

Yes, I will miss this obi won kenobi of the airwaves. This Karl Rove of rightwing christianity. His ability to call the evil good and the good evil was breathtaking. The acrobat ease he displayed in flipping christianity on its’ head was dizzying.

I do wish him well now, of course. In three days he will realize he his dead and will begin the 49 day death “bardos” where he will meet the white Buddha of the central realm, whose body is dazzling white and radiates pure blue light. Who sits on the lion throne etc. etc. etc.
