Driving in Portland in winter is tough, but at least it’s not Russia.

Remember the news clip I linked to a few days back about the cars playing ping-pong on icy Portland streets? Well it could’ve been worse, they could’ve been driving in Russia’s Tunnel of Death:

The 3,150 meter long Lefortovo Tunnel in Russia is the longest ‘in-city’ tunnel in all of Europe. There is a river running over it and water leaks at some points. When the temperature reaches minus 38 degrees like it did last winter, the road freezes and the result is the attached video taken during a single day with the tunnel camera. Congratulations to the driver of the dual bus!!

Jinkies!

  1. Wow, what a bunch of wonderful drivers…

And I’m sure there are road signs that warn about this kind of thing too.  I feel sorry for those on that bus, that looks like it would be a wild ass ride.

  2. I don’t know if I feel more fascinated or guilty for watching that—the proverbial “watching an auto wreck” moment.

But it’s worth it to see that bus—yeesh!

  3. Yeah, I first found that video about a 9 months ago. This posting is recent, but it’s been out there for a while. I showed it to some Russian coworkers I have, and they all knew about this place.

It’s pretty sad that they have so much footage of people crashing and yet can’t seem to stop them from driving like lunatics.

  4. Actually, given that the other drivers have no trouble stopping and skid marks are left (on the road too), I’d say this is more speeding + drinking.

I live in Edmonton, so I know of this thing called “black ice”. Both the beer and the road condition.

Eeeeheemmm, to listen to all of you guys….

A seconds inattention should not mean that you simply spin out and do a somersault with your car, nor that your bus suddenly behaves like a rubber band or your truck tips over. The skid marks do NOT automatically imply drunk driving – if the tunnel leaks locally, then the spot where you spin out may be localised too!

Didn’t you read the commentary? Ice on the road? In a TUNNEL where you certainly are not expecting it? This is an outrage in my view, and just cries out for a “50 people burned to death in accident involving tanker truck” headline.

More of an example of a local authority not caring, than of human stupidity. ANY point where accidents cluster has a fault. Any. Otherwise, there would never be enough clustering for this little video to be created.

  6. ANY point where accidents cluster has a fault.

Yep.  And it is sooooo obviously conspiracy by the man to oppress women, minorities, children and little puppies.  rolleyes

  7. Consi, I am a traffic engineer. If accidents happen repeatedly at one point, it is the duty of the road authorities to do what they reasonably can to fix it.

If you disagree with that, what is a *community* for? What do we pay taxes earmarked for road maintenance for? Why do we obey road rules?

There are certain things which government HAS to take care of. Shared infrastructure is one thing. So don’t give me that kind of talk.
