OK, that was a crappy headline.
F.E.A.R. Combat is the complete multiplayer component of F.E.A.R. and includes all the updates, additional official maps and additional official game modes all in one downloadable file. F.E.A.R. Combat users will be able to play against the owners of the retail version of F.E.A.R. as well as the other F.E.A.R. Combat users.
Can I just say that this is friggin’ cool as hell? I’ve had the full game on my Amazon Wish List for awhile now (and I’m hoping one of my relatives will buy it for my birthday next Friday, hint hint to any relatives paying attention) and now I’ll be able to get a little multiplayer action in until I get the full game.
I’m actually surprised that this sort of thing isn’t more common. Most FPS fans buy the game in part because of the multiplayer game mode that adds a lot of replay value to the game, but with so many offerings out there it can be difficult to tell if the multiplayer will be to your tastes. This allows folks to get a taste of the game and see if they want to buy the full package. It’s also a boon for LAN parties where only a couple of folks may have the retail version and everyone else ends up using a pirated copy just to be able to play for an afternoon. It’s also not a bad way to enamor yourself with gamers which will probably help improve sales of the full game. You still need a CD key to install it, but you can have one generated for you from the same site you download the files from. Be prepared to wait awhile though as the download is over 1800MBs.
Guess what I’ll be doing this evening?
