Microsoft manages to land GTA: IV.

The folks at Joystiq are reporting a major coup on Microsoft’s part as they’ve managed to get Rockstar Games to commit to releasing the next in the Grand Theft Auto series on the Xbox 360 on the same day it’s released for the PS3. It’s not an exclusive deal, but it nullifies the PS3 from gaining the same console moving benefit that those titles gave the PS2. A lot of Playstation 2s were sold thanks to the GTA series so this is a significant blow to Sony.

  1. I’m sure Sony has some kind of plan in action. Extra content, slightly different storyline, etc. Microsoft is powerful but I doubt Rockstar Games would break such a bond with Sony just because they got a bit of money waved in their face.

  2. Seems like a straightforward business decision on Rockstar’s part.  I doubt Sony could offer them anything that would make up for delaying sales to the Xbox 360’s base, which given the headstart in system sales, will be considerably larger than the PS3’s for some time to come.

The xBox360 has been out for 6 months. It was released with 18 titles (11 were sports titles) and there are currently 43 titles released for the 360.

There are 1020 PS2 titles made so far.[/url] All PS1/PS2 games will be playable on the PS3.

  4. Judging by my local Best Buy stores, it still seems like every Xbox 360 they get sells out in short order.  This must’ve influenced Rockstar to some degree.  When Sony got the games exclusively for a while, the PS2 had a huge head start in sales.  The PS3 will not, even if they sell every system they can crank out in that time.

If I want to play PS1 and PS2 games, I can use my PS2.  If I want to play GTA4, I won’t have to buy a $600 PS3 or wait 6 months for it to come out on the 360 (Hypothetically speaking anyways, I don’t own a 360 and I’m not real keen on buying any first gen consoles, especially at those prices).
