Attack of the Vampire Spiders!

Scientists have discovered a new species of East African jumping spider that is vampiric, but you don’t have to worry about it attacking you in the dead of night:

The spider, Evarcha culicivora, lacks the ability to pierce skin and to sip blood, so instead it feeds indirectly on blood by choosing, as its preferred meal, female mosquitoes that have just engorged themselves with a victim’s blood.

The blood-hungry spider is the first predator ever identified that selects its prey based upon what the prey just ate. Similar to a protein shake, blood can be a highly nutritious drink that goes down smoothly.

It eats mosquitoes? Can they survive a Michigan winter and, if so, where can we get a few million of the little buggers to set loose in the countryside? Now thats my kind of vampire!

Sorry, errr, wrong answer! Not until they have gorged will they be selected, so they’ve gotta feed of some unlucky creature. Now if you could always be certain whom they fed off of, hmmmm? That and you’d have to know for sure that they end the mosquitos existence and not just merely have a parasitic relationship where the meal isn’t completed (sort like mosquito conservation efforts).
