Christianity as a meme

Check out this page.  I’d love to reproduce it in full, but I dont have permission (have not asked).  Made me think.  Thought you might like to discuss.

Intro:
The reason this meme complex has been so successful is that it has evolved a remarkably precise insight into human nature. The meme complex has mutated and evolved through the centuries, creating a meme complex that is highly effective, because it “pushes all the right buttons” and is successful at reproducing and spreading because it very artfully and skillfully alters behavior.

This meme complex is one in a major category of memes, studied by the science of memetics, and that category is religion. The specific meme complex we are going to study is that of Christianity, and its principal vector, the Bible, specifically the New Testament.

  1. Yes – fascinating. I had always thought that religion itself was a good example of how complex things can arise, improve and survive through the mechanism of evolution.

The ‘DNA’ of most religions are their holy books and the analogy to reproduction is the idea that you must ‘go forth and spread the word’.

By the way, I see Bush has thrown his hat into the ring and agreed that ID should be taught alngside evolution in SCIENCE classes.

    or just simply “fundie”
This man obviously wants our children to succeed in a faith based world.  Credulity and ignorance combine to restore the US to its full glory!

  4. (Christianity) is successful at reproducing and spreading because it very artfully and skillfully alters behavior

Well, that and the fact that in times past they’d tie you to a post and light you on fire if you disagreed with them.

Just when you thought he could not get any dumber.  Did he go to high school?  College?  What was his major?  How many braincells did he drown in alcohol?
