Retro commercial for “Mario Brothers” on the Atari consoles.

Wow, does this ever make me feel old. The folks at Retro Junk dug up an old commercial of the classic video game Mario Bros. for the Atari 2600 and 5200 that has just awful production values. It’s from 1983. I was 15 years old. That’s a full 22 years ago (I shuddered typing that).

I can remember the commercial easily now and I can remember wanting the game badly. We had an Atari 5200 and the market crashed during the fall of that year. I think we only ever bought perhaps five games for the 5200 before you couldn’t find anything in the stores to buy. It’s hard to imagine Mario ever appearing on anything other than Nintendo hardware, but there he and his brother Luigi are. Happily knocking the crap out of turtles.

22 friggin’ years ago! I still can’t believe it.

  1. Oh my…I totally and completely forgot about that one!  I was like 9…but watching the commercial I remembered it…we never had Atari, but the folks got us Intellivision…

  2. Damn you Les!  Isn’t it bad enough I keep misplacing my walker without you reminding me of eating Pop RocksTM, canned potato chips and getting Master PizzaTM stains all over that controller.

  3. so I gotta ask..
since I was 5 then and had few cares other than PBJ,  superman and weaseling in some controller time from older cousins… did man ACTUALLY land on the moon?!

Im sure I’ll be the one looking back asking myself where it all went soon eneough. LOL

  4. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was also 13 that year and wanted it.

I also had a colecovision which had donkeykong, wasn’t that the original mario game?
