Yet even more snippets that don’t quite add up to entries unto themselves.

In no particular order:

  • Stayed home from work yesterday due to a seriously upset tummy. Slept half the day and spent the other half playing Half-Life 2.
  • I’m feeling much better today, thank you.
  • Speaking of HL2, I was surprised that Amazon managed to get it delivered to me just one day after it was released. I didn’t think I’d get it until Friday at the earliest.
  • I didn’t think I’d get it yesterday because the first Amazon delivery I received wasn’t for HL2, but ended up being a copy of PVP Online At Large and Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Celebration as thank yous from John Hoke.
  • I also wanted to mention that I received a copy of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism from someone who’s name I haven’t been able to associate with their username as of yet. In case they’d rather I not mention them by name I’ll just say thanks for the book and I’m enjoying it very much.
  • Colin Powell has put in his resignation thus removing the single member of the Bush administration that I had any respect for.
  • So far Half-Life 2 simply rocks. It shares the same physics engine as DOOM 3, but actually manages to make it a part of the game instead of just fancy window dressing that has no real impact on game play. I spent twenty minutes yesterday just playing with the gravity gun once I got it to see what I could and couldn’t pick up with it and what happens when you throw said items at other items such as soft-squishy people and zombies.
  • Buzz saw blades, zombies, and a gravity gun combine to create hours of amusement.
  • I am so jonesing for some good eggnog.
  • OK, I think I’m done with this entry.
  • Yeah, I’m done.

  1. Lol, I really hope Amazon UK pulls through with MY copy tomorrow. Now I’ll be off (literally) to instal my new Radeon 9800 Pro so I can enjoy the goodness when it finally arrives.

  2. Probably just as well HL2 hasn’t been ported for Mac yet, or I’d get no work done here.

Les- since you posted not-quite-an-entry here, I have not-quite-a-comment:  Why doesn’t the “trains run on traintracks” entry accept comments?  Mine was so funny.  Okay, I post too much anyway.  Back to the salt mines.

  3. Hmmm. It appears it’s choking on some on the new blacklist checking feature. Not sure why. I’ll send a bug report off to Paul.

  4. Les, can half-life 2 be played as a 1st person shooter or is it strictly a multiplayer game? I loved the first game, but out here in the boonies where a fast internet connection is anything above 19kbps, on-line play is impossible.

  5. It’s strictly a one player game, actually.  There is no multiplayer element to it (though it does come with Counterstrike: Source for multiplayer gaming).

And I really should stop reading anything Les has to say on video games, because I went out and bought HL2 last night, and shall have no life for a while. ;P

  6. Les- Help! I can’t get to the most recent comments on the big threads- just the first hundred or so.  Did you change something, or am I just being klutzy again somehow?  Thanks-

  7. We’re testing a new comment module and it does have a fail safe limit of 100 comments. I’ll modify the comments template to hard code the limit to 300 so that won’t be an issue.

  8. Oh and Shelley, HL2 is a single player FPS. They opted to just port Counter-Strike to the source engine for the multiplayer part. You DO have to register the game through the Steam service once you install it, but that can be done over a dial up connection without issue. The only reason you’d have to have broadband would be if you wanted to purchase the game through Steam and download it. If you’re buying a boxed copy then it’s not an issue.

  9. Speaking of HL2, I was surprised that Amazon managed to get it delivered to me just one day after it was released. I didn’t think I’d get it until Friday at the earliest.

GRRRRR!!! Seven BUSINESS days after they said they shipped it, and I still haven’t received mine from England. 3-5 days, my ass!

  10. Unless they can deliver to Germany (DVD please!) within those 37 hours, yes.

Well, then again, my Win98SE system doesn’t work with my new graphics card either (5 crashes in 30 minutes, 20 of those spent on scandisk – gotta be a new record!). S

So I had to order a copy of Win2000 on Ebay too (I hope this will fix it) so its not that I’m going to be able to play it before next weekend, if at all 🙁
