Three asshat teens do over $200,000 in damage to local church.

It never ceases to amaze me how idiotic some kids can be. Rev. Bernard Fraser of Taylor, Michigan woke up around 3 a.m. Tuesday and spotted three teens through a rectory window who were in the middle of vandalizing St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church.

3 men charged with felonies in vandalism at Taylor church

The church, at 6442 Pelham Road near I-94, was broken into early Tuesday by vandals who broke three life-sized statues of Jesus and the church’s patron saint, the Blessed Virgin Mary, worth about $10,000 each. They smashed stained-glass windows, toppled the crucifix, sprayed fire extinguishers over the organ and stole musical instruments.

At Taylor Catholic School, windows and desks were damaged, nearly a dozen smaller statues of Mary were broken or used to knock locks off doors, and computers and a camera were stolen. At the gymnasium, equipment was stolen, and food and pop were used in an attempt to destroy the wood floor, said Taylor Police Detective Aaron Shrewsbury.

Matthew Gerick, 17, Adam Byron, 17, and Vincent Lee Watkins, 19, are charged with nine felony counts, including first-degree home invasion, breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property worth more than $20,000 and larceny of property worth about $50,000. The most serious charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

As if that wasn’t enough, one of the three teens confessed to having urinated in the baptismal font. This is what I think of when people use the word “anti-religious” to describe someone, but as it turns out that’s not the motivation behind this idiocy:

Shrewsbury said the suspects confessed. “They said they were bored and wanted to have some fun,” he said.

They did all this because they were bored?!? How big of an asshole do you have to be to cause $200,000 worth of damage to someone else’s property, Church or otherwise, just because you’re friggin’ bored?!? What the fuck is wrong with these people that they can’t find a better way to pass the time than to cause misery and loss to others who have done nothing to wrong them?? For that matter, how friggin’ stupid do you have to be to choose a Church across the street from your house?!? Hopefully these morons will spend some time in jail where I’m sure they’ll find plenty to keep them from getting bored.

  1. Hopefully these morons will spend some time in jail where I’m sure they’ll find plenty to keep them from getting bored.

And, being prison, I’m betting that being “bored” takes on a whole new, uncomfortable meaning.  Here’s hoping anyway.

  2. I’m not sure I buy the whole boredom shtick.  I wonder what the Hate Crimes act reads like in Michigan.

I’d almost like for the judge to sentence them to go be bored in the Marine Corps.  The draft is just around the corner anyway.

$10,000 for a statue of Mary?!?  I’m in the wrong business.

  3. So what video game was the inspiration for this crime? I ask this because we all know that kids only do bad things because of a video game’s influence.

  4. Probably more like anti-authority assholes.  You don’t do that much damage and insult (like pissing on something) unless you’re really trying to get back at someone or something.  Notice that they went after school grounds and a church, both sources of authority.  Kids don’t seem to spend much time vandalizing, say, the local Chuck E. Cheese’s.

    (“every”)

  5. Looking back at my own misspent youth, kids vandalize stuff because it’s there. It’s only as they get older that rebellion plays a part.

I agree, however, that asshats like these deserve a creative punishment that gives them something not-boring to do.

  6. I never vandalized anything…ok maybe I did…once but after being yelled at and having a BB shot at your behind you learn that kind of stuff just isn’t wrth the pain and suffering.

  7. This definitely goes beyond the “harmless kid pranks” category. Still, if “God” were “All Powerfull,” seems He/She could have stopped that activity after only one statue??? wink

  8. Dude, you think THAT’S bad?  I’ve been in Boston for the past two weeks at college, and I come home to find out that the Ukrainian church in my hometown of Colchester BLEW UP.  It wasn’t an act of vandalism (or terrorism for that matter) – some moron left a 30 gallon propane tank open inside, and a random spark ignited the gas, blowing the place off the face of the earth.  Thankfully, no one was in or around the church when it happened, so nobody was hurt, either.  I work at a gas station about 500 feet down the road, so it was pretty shocking to hear about (apparently, my friends house shook a mile away.)Neat huh?

The thing everybody’s freaking out about, however, is that a statue of the Virgin Mary was the only thing unscathed.  Big freakin’ deal (it was probably protected by all the decorations surrounding it).  Google “Colchester, Connecticut” and it’s sure to come up.

If ya ask me, couldn’t have turned out better.  Nobody got hurt, there’s one less church in my town, AND something blew up!!

  9. I am a teenager myself and the council are not providing any sort of clubs outside of schools for teenagers for people like me to make “friends” yeah ok there is the swimming pool and gym but you cant mix with other people. You e-mail the council and you get NO reply what so every

  10. Man, what a depressing story.  I understand the urge to destroy something, to feel powerful, but as a teenager all I did was throw rocks through a couple of windows at a Nike missle base.  Sounds good, doesn’t it?  But the base had been out of commission for years, was already crumbling, and it was hard to find any unbroken panes to break.  Vandalizing a church like this is beyond the pale.  If this is their idea of “fun”, they must be pretty fucked up.

  11. Hopefully the Judge will hang their asses out to dry over this. Interesting fact that may play a role in the outcome of the sentencing…Judge Salamone’s kids went to that school and his family belongs to the church. Hmmmmm….

  12. I’m not sure if I should be amused or what.  Yay for fucking with a church but if you’re gona mess with a church, mess with one of significance, such as st. peters basicilica.  Demolition is cool, vandalism is just half-assing it.

  13. dude its a fuckin church, BIG DEAL! they did there time and now ppl should just forget about it. Everyone does sumthin stupid as hell when they’re young..its not like they raped somebody. so all you god lovin ppl FUCK OFF! I LOVE VINCENT WATKINS AND ADAM BYROM! they are the sweetest ppl you will ever meet and they regret everything. SO SHUT THE FUCK UP!

  14. You’re a dumb ass, Anna, for trying to excuse the idiocy of this crime. You’re also a dumb ass because you assume we’re “god lovin ppl” as I and several other people here are actually atheists.

Being an atheist, however, doesn’t mean you don’t respect other people’s property even if you think such property is being used for silly superstitious nonsense.

    Stop being a dumb ass.

  15. listen to me dickwad i’m not a dumbass for standin up for 2 guys who have changed their lives around. HOW BOUT YOU STOP BEING A DUMBASS..THEY WERE FUCKIN KIDS. EVERY KID I KNOW HAS DESTROYED SOME KIND OF PROPERTY. SO SHOVE IT UP YOUR BLOWN OUT ASS AND GO SUCK ANOTHER DICK!

  16. Oh dear, it sounds like somebody hasn’t been taking their meds.

    anna,

If they really have changed their lives around and regret what they had done, good for them—it does not excuse what they have done.

It doesn’t matter what kind of building they vandalised.  I am an atheist and I would be very pissed off if somebody broke windows at either of the two churches that I go to.

I and the kids that I grew up with never really destroyed property.  Yeah, we blew things up with oxy/acetylene bombs, firecrackers and shotguns.  The things that we blew up or otherwise destroyed had been discarded or abandonded or we had permission to fuck it up.  I was a dumpster diver and frequently found cool things in the dumpsters of a local shopping mall to destroy (or fix and use).  I would never have even considered breaking a window.

How would you feel if instead of breaking the windows of a church, these “sweet ppl” had broken your house windows?

  17. Dear Anna…

Your friends are stupid, and from there actions we can tell they enjoy others misery, which is very bad and makes me sad, I am happy you say that they have changed but it is a little to late. Your posts in caps lock won’t help them, and your insults will not sway us, just make us believe that you are slightly dumb.
So sincerely please get fucked and die…

  18. Wait a tic, itdontmatter, you’re an athiest, yet you go to churches?  Doesn’t going to churches and celebrating negate the lack of belief in the above mentioned?

Or maybe ya just visit, I dunno but make some sense of this please.  Plus, they’re nothing wrong with enjoying the misery of others, just don’t become obsessed with it or in nothing else will you find joy.

Have fun, and Anna, caps lock is utterly pointless in conversation on a place of quality such as SEB, so fuckin stop.

  19. Uh-oh, an atheist that goes to churches.  Is he/she demented?  Has he lost his/her mind?  The masses are frothing at the mouth at the thought of losing an unbeliever.  Quick, IDM, provide context for them before they lose their minds as they’ve already lost their ability to create a hypothetical so “abhorrent” that it would include going to a church.

As to the comments to the young lady, my sentiment is with the commenters.  Unfortunately emotion has gotten the better of the young lass and she has demonstrated poor communication skills, poor socialization skills, bad manners and a lack of grace.  However, if she is to be believed as to her identity, that would make her a teenager.  In spite of the young lady’s character flaws, I can only wonder if responding in kind does not show the same character flaws.

  20. I know of plenty of atheists that still attend churches for a variety of reasons. Nothing all that strange about it.

  21. I know of plenty of atheists that still attend churches for a variety of reasons.

As a teen, I was one. I was forced to attend church with my parents (at least for a while, until they came to their senses and allowed me to stay home and catch up on my beauty sleep).

  22. whitebloodoftheheavens and Consigliere, you are assuming that I go to churches that don’t accept athiests as they are.  There is a joke that says that the only time you might hear the words “Jesus Christ” uttered in the church that I go to is when the minister spills coffee on her Geneva gown.

Children are encouraged to attend as many different religious services (or equiv) as possible.  High school level “Sunday School” sessions are more like comparative religion classes.  Parents of teenagers do not think it odd if their children decide to attend a different church, or to attend no church at all.

The church where the first state sanctioned same-sex marriage in the United States was performed is the same denomination as the churches that I attend.  One of the churches in my denomination was founded by John Quincy Adams, another was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and other has John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and their wives buried in the basement.

Some people who attended churches of the same denomination that I go to (I don’t know how many of these were athiests, many were probably nonthiests):

    Abigail Adams
    John Adams
    John Quincy Adams
    Ethan Allen
    Benjamin Franklin
    Thomas Jefferson
    Thomas Paine
    Paul Revere
    Adlai Stevenson
    William Howard Taft
    Alexander Graham Bell
    Luther Burbank
    Edmond Halley (Edmund Halley)
    Samuel F.B. Morse
    Florence Nightingale

  23. I said: Quick, IDM, provide context for them before they lose their minds as they’ve already lost their ability to create a hypothetical so “abhorrent” that it would include going to a church.

I thought it was clear that I was mocking your fellow atheist WBOTH for not being able to think of a reason why you may still attend church services.

You might want to check your e and i in theist and derivatives thereof.

  24. You might want to check your e and i in theist and derivatives thereof.

I take liberties with my spelling in order to give spelling nazis something to be concerned about.

  25. Quest for knowledge, I gotcha.  Plus, I may have worded it like shit due to a multitude of reasons, but I meant it as an honest question so no offense meant there.

And since when did I become an athiest?

  26. Don’t pay any attention to me.  I’m just here to add my name to the list of atheists who (occasionally) go to church, for various reasons.  Mea maxima culpa, but sometimes it’s appropriate.  Besides, some of those believers are pretty cute…

  27. I’m just here to add my name to the list of atheists who (occasionally) go to church, for various reasons.

That is how I found out about Unitarian/Universalists, I went to church for a funeral.  The funeral was about his life and the impact that he had made.  Death is the natural end of life and immortality was the impact made on the lives of others.

While I was married, I didn’t usually go to church, but my wife was active in several activities at her (Catholic) church.  I worked at several functions, such as carnivals, various dinners, and even repaired a PA system.  I found it fun and I liked the people.  Most of the Catholics that I encountered were totally different from the Born Again Christians that I have met.  I made no secret of my not being Catholic and nobody seemed to have an issue with it.  Many of the Catholics that I knew from her church went to Mass every Saturday night or Sunday morning, did the whole kneeling thing in church, did Communion, and all that.  There was a crusifix somewhere in the house, a case of beer in the refrigerator, and a package of birth control pills in the wife’s purse.

  28. zilch said: Besides, some of those believers are pretty cute…

red face Awww, I didn’t know you noticed zilch. tongue wink

Score one for us mackeral snappers. cheese

  29. Score one for us mackeral snappers.

Cool, that means that you have a case of beer in the refrigerator and your wife keeps her birth control pills in her purse.

  30. Cool, that means that you have a case of beer in the refrigerator and your wife keeps her birth control pills in her purse.

Close, but not quite.  Change the beer to Belvedere and make her my ex-wife.

  31. Awww, I didn’t know you noticed zilch.

Consi, I’ve seen a pic of you, and you’re admittedly not bad looking; but I was actually referring to my Catholic wife-in-sin.  Primarily.

  32. I was just letting you guys know that these guys HAVE changed their lives around. All three of them are very close friends of mine. I don’t think that calling them “Stupid Evil Bastards” is in any way correct. They made a mistake and all three of them regret it… It’s not like they harmed anyone and they did their time. They do not deserve to have people telling them how they are. They know who they are and so do their friends. They are all three very sweet people and putting shit up about them on the internet just shows that you have nothing better to do with your lives then to put others down.

  33. CLynn, as good as it is to hear that these fellows have changed their lives around that in no way changes the fact that they acted like assholes in the past. Note that I never called them Stupid Evil Bastards as that’s the name of my blog. No, what I called them was asshats because that’s what you are when you do $200,000 damage to someone else’s private property because you were “bored.”

Their crime wasn’t a “mistake” – it was done intentionally with full knowledge that what they were doing was wrong and illegal. They fully deserve to have people reminding them of what asshats they were in the past and, if they’re truly responsible, they’ll own up to that fact.

It’s great they have friends like you to try and defend what little honor they may still have, but you do them and yourself a grave disservice by trying to downplay and dismiss their past actions. If being told what asshats they were makes them feel bad, good, that’s how they SHOULD feel.

  34. It’s not like they harmed anyone and they did their time. They do not deserve to have people telling them how they are.

The thread was dormant until you came back and stirred the shit up again.

I call bullshit on them being sweet people; sweet people do not deliberately destroy things.  Mean people can change, but they do not become sweet people overnight.  If they have already done their time, it is obvious that they did not do enough time.

Although they may not have physically harmed anyone, I am sure that many people feel violated by the acts that these ‘sweet people’ committed.  I am also sure that some of the people are deeply saddened by the destruction of the religious icons.

  35. The thing that you people seem to forget.. is that you do NOT know these guys. You have never personally met them, you have never held a conversation with them.. most of you probably don’t even know what they look like. Yes they made a MISTAKE.. and yes I meen MISTAKE.. everyone makes a mistake at some point in their lives, it just happens to be that they made a huge one.. they did their time and they paid their fines.. you cannot judge them if you do not know them.. You should really think to get to know someone before you talk shit about them.. I know that what they did in the past was wrong but its seriously not like they killed or raped someone..

  36. CLynn writes…

The thing that you people seem to forget.. is that you do NOT know these guys. You have never personally met them, you have never held a conversation with them.. most of you probably don’t even know what they look like.

That’s all true and has no bearing on our ability to make value judgements about the incident this entry was written about.

Yes they made a MISTAKE.. and yes I meen MISTAKE.. everyone makes a mistake at some point in their lives, it just happens to be that they made a huge one.. they did their time and they paid their fines.. you cannot judge them if you do not know them..

I most certainly can judge them without knowing them. If I had been asked to be on the jury hearing their trial that’s exactly what I’d have to be able to do.

Again you try to downplay the seriousness of their crime by claiming it was merely a “huge mistake.” A huge mistake would’ve been something stupid like accidentally burning the church down because they were playing around with illegal fireworks in the parking lot. Note the lack of INTENT in that example. Instead the crime they are guilty of is one the had fully INTENDED to commit for purely idiotic reasons.

You should really think to get to know someone before you talk shit about them.. I know that what they did in the past was wrong but its seriously not like they killed or raped someone..

So that makes it all OK in your book, eh? I’m beginning to suspect you’re as big an asshat as they are.

  37. Ok so now that I express my opinion to you.. not insulting you or anything, you think that you have a right to call me names?? Yea that shows good character. I was just trying to prove my point to you and I get insulted.. That just goes to show that you judge people without knowing the whole story.. You think that I “downplay” what they did.. I am just saying that they did their time and they know what they did was wrong.. and by the way “asshat”?? Come on now, can’t you think of anything better than that??

  38. Oh and one more thing.. It’s Adam Byrom, not Byron.. and all three of them got out within 15 months because of good behavior smile

  39. CLynn spews forth yet again…

Ok so now that I express my opinion to you.. not insulting you or anything, you think that you have a right to call me names??

It’s somewhat ironic that you came here and chided us for expressing our opinions and now you’re complaining that you’re being chided for expressing your own. Hypocrisy will get you no where.

Yea that shows good character. I was just trying to prove my point to you and I get insulted..

Certainly no worse of character than you’ve shown by trying to downplay the seriousness of your friends’ crimes.

That just goes to show that you judge people without knowing the whole story.. You think that I “downplay” what they did.. I am just saying that they did their time and they know what they did was wrong..

Yep, I judge people without knowing the whole story all the time. You do too. Everyone does. It’s a fact of life. Get used to it.

and by the way “asshat”?? Come on now, can’t you think of anything better than that??

Sure, how about “dumbfuck?” I was trying to cut you some slack, but if you insist…

Oh and one more thing.. It’s Adam Byrom, not Byron.. and all three of them got out within 15 months because of good behavior

Good for them. I hope they’ve honestly learned their lesson, but with friends like you telling them that all they did was a simple mistake, I suspect we’ll be hearing about them in the news again.

  40. Man fuck you then.. and no you wont hear about them in the news again because if you would FUCKING LISTEN.. I told you that they changed and they are SORRY!! oh yea.. and youre ugly as fuck smile

    Have a nice day

  41. Oh dear!  She was so sincere that she had to resort to obscenities and insults.

  42. This thread has, even by this site’s measure, turned rather classless.  Sometimes base responses are best left alone, regardless of whether it my-site-dammit!-my-site, ot not.

    Widdle ways attract widdle.

  43. You are free as always, Rob, to take your attention to some other blog if we’re too lowbrow for your tastes. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings in the least.

  44. Too low-brow for my tastes?  Yes.
    But, more obligations dictate otherwise.

After all, when i see someone rolling in a puddle of mud i am (always) compelled to call attention to such.

It’s my job in life, be you leftist, rightist, fascist, eugenicist, etc.

  45.
