Will Bush dump Cheney?

Since Kerry selected Edwards as his running mate there have been the inevitable comparisons between what the presumptive VP nominees bring to their respective tickets. A tonge-in cheek Op Ed piece in todays New York Times listed some of Cheney’s negatives—manipulation of intelligence, possible association with outing Valerie Plame, and his relationship with Halliburton. The article goes on to discuss plausible plusses that Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain might bring as running mates for the President. (He neglected to mention Colin Powell’s musical talents.) There was even a letter to the editor in this morning’s St. Louis Post Dispatch suggesting that Bush should select Elizabeth Dole.

Here are some poll results that indicate how much a diferent VP nominee might help the President. They were posted on The Daily Kos Sat Jul 10th, 2004 at 11:32:51 EDT.

Just saw it on MSNBC…

GENERAL ELECTION
BUSH/CHENEY 44
KERRY/EDWARDS 47
NADER/CAMEJO 3

…WITHOUT NADER
BUSH/CHENEY 45
KERRY/EDWARDS 51

…REMOVE CHENEY
BUSH/POWELL 53
KERRY/EDWARDS 44

JOB APPROVAL
APPROVE 48
MAY 2004 42

On the Cheney question, the guy from Newsweek said they tried out BUSH-FRIST (Kerry still wins) & BUSH-MCCAIN (Bush wins but within the margin of error).

In answer to the original question—I suspect not for several reasons. Bush is big on loyalty, Cheney is his biggest ally on the myth of the Osama-Saddam link, and the campaign wouldn’t put Cheney out as their front man if they were planning on dumping him. Would Powell accept if offered? I’m a bit less certain on this one, but I suspect not.

  1. Along with those factors, Cheney’s never going to leave Bush’s side because HE’S the only one out of the two with any sort of meager intelligence (emphasis on meager).  He’s not going to let little Bush boy push him out of his white house.  He’s far too sinister and conniving for that.

  2. I wrote about this a couple of days ago, and have thought about this for a year or so… causing nightmares

Forget Powel and McCain… imagine if he chose Rudy Guiliani and anounced it at Ground Zero before the Repugnican Convention… aghhh! NY could turn into a Red State … feh!

It is also telling the person who has been the most vocal about this is Al “no pothole too small” D’Amato from NY who is grooming Gov. Pataki from NY for a Presidential run…

Or am I just being a paranoid bastard?

    big surprise

  3. How’bout Kerry/Powell?  Wouldn’t that be nice… sorry, dreaming, lazily and foolhartedly.

  4. John, don’T worry too much. I may not be exactly at Ground Zero of this one (excuse the pun), but I get the feeling that many people in the US are really sick of all this sugar-coated-but-real-macho patriotism.

In fact, I believe Kerrys chances are quite good right now, and the Bushies are simly casting around for something to change the mood. I don’t think they’ll find it. And they won’t drop Cheney.

Here in Germany, we had an election (I believe it was in the late 50s) where our chancellor incumbent was so popular, they said that he could only loose if it became known that he slaughtered puppies in his basement. Thats it for Cheney – before Bush can dump him while keeping face, Cheney would have to do something like that.

  5. Hi Lez!

How come some people have their name above the post (as a link), but most are fully ‘nameless’?

Yes, I am registered and logged on. The previous post was mine too.

  6. How ‘bout Kerry/LaVey – still beats Cheney/Bush!

    PS. I like La Vey’s comment…

“We believe in neither God nor the Devil. We believe in the individual.”

  7. ingolfson,

The issue that drives my fear is that Adolf er… Rudolph Guiliani is still very popular here in NY. Throw him on the ticket, and NY State could swing Repugnican this time around, and a Democrat has no chance in hell of winning the electoral college without NY.

Karl Rove is an evil genius, and cheney has a bad ticker…
    cool grin

  8. The Bush Team is huge (HUGE) on loyalty.  This principle manifests itself in all sorts of ways.  And one of them is:  unless you break the rule of loyalty to the Bush Team, the Bush Team remains loyal.

This is another example, when juxtaposed to the Democrats, where Republicans simply don’t eat their own, despite polls.

Personally, i hope (and know) that Cheney shall remain, and you can’t get any better news than that come November, if you’re a Democrat.

  9. I don’t think Powell would ever be asked, nor would he accept, the VP position.  The Bush administration has treated him like shit ever since they put him in his current position.  Both he and Christine Whitman were installed in office, then publically humiliated over and over again by having their announcements reversed. Poor Colin has had to deal with all the dirty work created by Bush and co.‘s bumbling.  I don’t expect him to stay with the administration if (Cthulhu forbid) they should win another term.

I’d almost suspect that they just put in token minorities and then proceeded to ignore them, except there’s Condi, who seems to make out okay as long as she sticks by Bush’s side like a good little wife.
