In this afternoon’s mail I received a Delos CD titled For Thy Pleasure featuring the Los Angelos Guitar Quartet. The members of the LAGQ are Bill Kanengiser, Scott Tennant, Andrew York and John Dearman. Most of the music is Baroque, but I think a little Renaissance slipped in with the Monteverdi.
I ordered the CD because of the last track, variations on the Pachalbel Cannon, which I heard on our one remaining classical music station last week. The selection is unique. After stating the theme, the variations progress through Reggae, Dumbau, Bluegrass, Funk, Jazz, Punk, Grunge and Rumba. (I missed at least one transition.)
Scott Tennant—author of Pumping Nylon, a book on guitar techniques—wrote the program notes for the album. Here is part of what he said about their rendition of the Canon
All beauty aside, we in the LAGQ have searched for other qualities we feel have been lying dormant within this masterpiece for the last two centuries. We hope that we have awakened some of this potential here.
The whole CD was good, an enjoyable 55:17.
I couldn’t find a link to samples from this CD, but you can go here for some short LAGQ videos. (Real Player )
I didn’t look hard enough yesterday. You can go to the Canton MA Library Gala Announcement and then click on enter. The Canon plays as background music.
