The Uniroyal company has this landmark in the metro Detroit area in the form of a giant tire alongside of I-94 that was once a ferris wheel at the 1964 New York World’s fair. Ever since Uniroyal introduced their line of puncture resistant tires the giant tire along the road has had a giant nail sticking out of it to advertise those tires. Well, the giant tire will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year so the folks at Uniroyal thought they’d clean it up, yank that giant nail and get it in shape for its big anniversary.
So what do you do with an 11 foot tall, 27 inch wide, 250 pound nail? You donate it to the city of Allen Park who have put the nail up for bid on eBay to raise funds for the city’s historical society. They’ve set a reserve of $3000 and have only managed to attract a high bid of $941.35 as of this morning. The auction still has 5 days or so to go meaning there’s plenty of time for you to pick up a bit of Motor City marketing history. Imagine the pranks you could play with this thing! Stick it on the roof of your coworker’s car and then call him over to the office window to ask him what the hell happened to his car out in the parking lot. Woo hoo! We’re having some fun now!
