But I finally managed to finish Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. This still beats the hell out of how long it took me to finish the first game on the PS1, Metal Gear Solid, which was on the order of 3 years or so. In fact, I finished a mere couple of weeks prior to Christmas last year. Good thing considering I got the sequel as a gift from my wonderful wife who tolerates my gaming obsession quite well.
Truth is, MGS2 is one of the primary reasons I bought a Playstation 2 when they became available. I loved the first game so much, even not having finished it yet, that when I saw what the sequel was going to be like on the PS2 I just had to have it. I was sure I’d have a hot little PS2 in my hands mere hours after their release having signed up for the pre-order and, in fact, I had a couple of opportunities to pick one up almost from day one. However, at the time Anne was struggling with her PC as she had gotten into using it more than I had anticipated she would when I built the first one for her and it was apparent it was now woefully under powered. I had gotten her blessing to buy myself a shiny new PS2, but I turned around and used the money to upgrade her PC instead. My reserved PS2 went to a co-worker who hadn’t really considered buying a Playstation for his kids until he heard me raving about how awesome MGS2 was going to be. It went to a good home and the whole family fell in love with it.
That was all the proof my mother needed that I was really in love. I gave up buying a PS2 so I could build my fiance a better computer. Thought my mom was going to faint from the shock of it all. Obviously I picked one up some months later once all the hoopla died down and stock was plentiful and we had some time to recover from Christmas shopping.
On a related note, my nephew Dakota called me a month or so ago to gloat at me that he had beaten MGS1, which he had gotten for Christmas, in a mere 3 months compared to my 3 years. The phone call went something likes this:
ME (answering phone): Hello?
DAKOTA: I DID IT IN 3 MONTHS!!!
VOICE WHISPERING IN BACKGROUND: Say hello and tell him who you are!
DAKOTA: Uncle Les? Uncle Les, this is Dakota!
ME: Ah, how are you?
DAKOTA: I DID IT IN 3 MONTHS!!
ME: Did what?
DAKOTA: BEAT METAL GEAR SOLID! YOU TOOK THREE YEARS!!!
ME: Yes, I know that I took three years.
DAKOTA: YOU TOOK THREE YEARS AND I DID IT IN THREE MONTHS!
He’s a good little kid, but he never misses a chance to get back at me for all the times I tease him mercilessly. That’s OK, to come close to matching his performance on MGS2 he’ll have about 3 days to do it in.
