According to this article on CNN a couple of days ago we just narrowly missed having an asteroid slam into the planet Earth. The wandering rock passed within 288,000 miles of the earth, about 1.2 times the distance to the moon, without anyone noticing apparrently because it came from the same direction as the sun. Scientists estimate that if it had hit the atmosphere over a populated area such as Atlanta it would have been the equivalent of a 4-megaton nuclear blast that would have leveled the city. Personally, I would have been pissed if an asteroid had hit the planet and I hadn’t been alerted ahead of time so I could at least watch it happen. You don’t get that kind of entertainment every day.
