I got the following email yesterday:

Subject: Question.
From: fred beebe

Do you happen to know if Barack Obama a muslim or a Christian?

That was it. It struck me as a somewhat odd question to ask until I recalled that there was some recent dirt slinging in the media that he’s a Muslim as though that would make him a horrible President who’d sell us out to the terrorists as soon as he finished his inauguration speech.

I sent back a reply pointing to this TIME magazine article in which Obama discusses his spiritual journey:

My work with the pastors and laypeople there deepened my resolve to lead a public life, but it also forced me to confront a dilemma that my mother never fully resolved in her own life: the fact that I had no community or shared traditions in which to ground my most deeply held beliefs. The Christians with whom I worked recognized themselves in me; they saw that I knew their Book and shared their values and sang their songs. But they sensed that a part of me remained removed, detached, an observer among them. I came to realize that without an unequivocal commitment to a particular community of faith, I would be consigned at some level to always remain apart, free in the way that my mother was free, but also alone in the same ways she was ultimately alone.

In such a life I, too, might have contented myself had it not been for the particular attributes of the historically black church, attributes that helped me shed some of my skepticism and embrace the Christian faith.

Seems the answer is he’s a Christian. I didn’t think to check his official website until just now and it turns out that he and his family attend Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. So unless the Muslims have started naming their mosques to make people think they’re Christian churches then I’d have to say he’s most likely a Christian of some sort. Probably Christian progressive to the point that the Religious Right will claim he’s really an atheist.

Just in case anyone else was wondering.

Reminds me of how a great candidate for Illinois Governor got screwed during the race because he had the same last name as an ex-Illinois governor whom will soon be an ex-con.  People actually thought he was a brother of the crooked ex-governor even though they were not related to each other in any way, shape, or form.

Another example of people believing what they want to believe and being happy being ignorant…

Much more important to me is that he really seems to value working constructively with people with whom he disagrees.  I remember his debates with Alan Keyes and was very impressed by his constitutional focus, and even more so his even temper.  He’s a very solid guy.

Next up on Fox: is he Christian enough?

The United Church of Christ is a “progressive” (indeed, quite lefty) body of Christian churches which predicates its message on the concept that God is “Still Speaking” to man—“a church that believes God has yet more light and truth to break forth from the Word.” With his politics, I’m not surprised Obama is a member of a UCC congregation.

They ran a series of very affirming advertisements at the height of the (latest) gay-marriage/civil unions crapola, stressing that we are all welcome in God’s house. Gay or bi? That’s okay. Goth? No problem. Poor and/or brown? Come on in. Struggling with drugs or alcohol? God loves you too. He loves us all, and a true Christian leaves the judgment to Him. “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” These ads are worth checking out, and they might surprise many of the angry druids on this site who seem to love to hate a caricature of “Christians”.

I’m not a member of this church, and I generally disagree with most of their members’ lefty politics, but I don’t have to be a member or in complete agreement with their secular politics to be proud of the good people of the UCC.

I guess that answers my hypothetical Fox News question.

Hopefully with the political ascendence of Obama, the more compassionate values of the UCC will begin to spread in American Christendom.

Until recently the loudest contingent of American Christianity has been the “Hate gays stop abortion keep women down and bomb other countries” bunch.  Little wonder that’s the face of Christianity that gets the most response.

Some people believe that UCC stands for Unitarians Considering Christ.  They are very liberal congregational Christian churches.

Many UCC churches have periodic church dinners, and in many churches, a good number of the attendees will be needy people who are guests of the congregation.

Damn! I wondered if that was a hypothetical or not. LOL
I’m continually amazed at me - I’m so gullible BUT I’m not a xian. It just doesn’t make any sense.
Maybe I’m in that Goldilocks zone that Dawkins refers to in God Delusion.

Brendon, here you go: Druids. You were genuinely confused. As a good Christian, you would not be inclined to throw out poorly thought-out insults, so I know you accidentally mistook us for an ancient Celtic tribe. An easy mistake, I know, even though I for one have more Czech blood than anything from the British Isles. Go read up and earn your Gold Star for today.

Well, I still don’t qualify.  I have pretty much one of every character except a druid.

Who says I’m a Christian, to say anything of a “good Christian”?

All that we know for sure about your Uncle B is that I frown at reflexive denunciations of people of Christian faith. Like Barack Obama, I look for opportunities to find common ground with most people, and would like to cooperate even with folks with whom I disagree. Except hippies. And Al Gore. This may be why I don’t belong to a UCC congregation.

I understand the sentiment about Al Gore.  Nevertheless, the free love sentiment expressed by hippies should merit further consideration about whether you can find a way to cooperate in a mutually beneficial manner. As long as they adhere to modern personal hygiene.
