WSJ wonders if Iran is planning the end of the world on August 22.

Apparently annoyed that the Bible Decoders are getting all the attention, the folks at the Wall Street Journal have decided to try looking into the crystal ball:

In Islam, as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time--Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined. Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22. This was at first reported as “by the end of August,” but Mr. Ahmadinejad’s statement was more precise.

What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to “the farthest mosque,” usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.

All I’ve got to say is that if Iran does bring about the end of the world on August 22nd then I’ll be severely pissed off. That’s 3 days before my 39th birthday for crying out loud! I don’t get new video games on a regular basis like I did when I was young and single so this makes my birthdays and Christmas very important holidays for me. It’s highly annoying to think anyone would consider ending the world just days before I get some new toys. Dammit!

It’s like they said back in the ‘80s:  One little nuclear war can ruin your whole day.

I would suggest sending the Iranians an e-mail (a telegram would be more effective, but I don’t know if anyone actually has a telegraph service anymore) asking them to delay armageddon until after your birthday, but, you know, they have a schedule to keep.  Plans have been set in motion.  The problems of three little people don’t matter a hill of beans in this crazy mixed-up world.  Much less yours.  Sorry, that’s just the facts, jack.

If the world doesn’t end, I think you should ask the WSJ and the Iranians for an apology for trying to ruin your birthday.

Good advice well noted.

I’d love to know what the Iranians are supposedly going to destroy the world with.  Even if Iran reveals on the 22nd it has a nuke it doesn’t have any delivery system capable of putting it more than a few hundred miles from home.

On the other hand I go back full time at the end of the month (rather than be .81 of a person).  End of the world would mean me avoiding early starts, late finishes, and saturday working to fit the extra hours in while looking after the kids. Plus it would solve our debt problem. I don’t know Les, self, self, self with you isn’t it- damn liberal.

I’ve discovered that it all boils down to brain wiring: your brain is wired to worship magic or it isn’t, either it’s wired to utilize logic or it isn’t, either it’s analytical of myths or it isn’t.

Hey Les, but see, if the world ends then, maybe you get to fight Ahmand...whatever , the same Irani that I have myself wrote an entry on this same blog :-(

...maybe you get to fight him as the end-boss of a level?

After you have to climb the Stature of Liberty to save the world from his evil liquid bomb.

Well Les, looks like they owe you an apology.

I don’t think we should trust the predictions of the WSJ anymore.  Maybe if they had left it vague, like “the Iranians will start a war in late August if the Prophet Muhammad appears to them”.  That would leave them an out.  As it is, they seem to be talking out their ass.  Which they were.

I’ve been watching far too much Eddie Izzard today - I just read that to myself with Eddie’s voice and ... it was very funny. smile
As for me - I think predictions are terrific and open lovely big doors to humour, causing much smiling and laughter. LOL

NC, I’m not going to be too upset with the WSJ being wrong seeing as this means my birthday won’t be ruined after all.

That is so great; we do have something in common.
With the theme of this great site my feeling in my humble opinion is that our stand before before all nations on this rock rests on proof that we are humble servents who want peace. We all want peace. Those that at this point envolved in war care about their $, and status so we are up for sell within a wheel sintrificlly out of control. To sell your self distruction is capitolizing on the thing we we hold dear, life here and in iraq.

The imaginary world of videogames is much more fun and zero risk compared to real life; you can do things you couldn’t/wouldn’t do normally, and if it goes wrong press the reset button (which I wish existed in life). With games it’s not working to live just to work some more, give me toys anyday.

Besides to actually end the world would take something much more drastic than nukes, like the creation of miniture black holes by extreeme compression (can be done) - there would be nothing to stop it passing straight into the centre of earth and oscilating back and forth consuming all it meets. The only way to terminate a black hole is to project antimatter into it, which is how the universe restores lost entropy (the nothingness outside splits into particles and antiparticles, projecting the antis in to eliminate the black hole and the particle out to restore the entropy. Light can be used to do this too, and is observed that frequency emmitted decreases with black hole mass, I don’t know why that is. It’s possible that all the matter of today was created by this black hole elimination, if the universe started with a black hole as you might expect something of that initial density to be (shouldn’t have expanded if it all came simultaneously from a point, and also there would have to be assymentry for what it projected out to clump together, otherwise there is no net force of gravity other than inwards.
