Why are Americans so Stupid?

Disbelief, dismay, anger, depression, numbness.  I felt the same as many of you.  And wondered what possessed so many Americans to vote for Bush against the better interests of the rest of the planet, the United States, and even of the Republicans in the bottom 98% income bracket.  Aside from all questions of software manipulation, discarded ballots, challenged registrations, and divinely wrought chad hanging, quite a few voters did choose the Cowboy.  Why?

There’s been no shortage of explanations in these posts and elsewhere—fundamentalist Christians, biased media, appeals to fear and xenophobia, simplicity of message—probably all of these are true to some extent, along with other factors, but they beg the question:  Why are Americans so stupid?  Why do they fall for these transparent ploys?

Now, don’t get me wrong:  First of all, everyone’s stupid when it comes to politics and Americans are in good company there.  And I don’t think Americans are genetically stupider than Europeans, or Africans, or anyone else.  Jared Diamond does make a good case in Guns, Germs, and Steel for the superior intellect of the few surviving hunter-gatherers (he has worked for years in Papua New Guinea) who have been rigorously selected up to the present, unlike us well fed agriculturalist/couch potatoes, but probably the important differences are environmental.

Most Americans today do seem different from most Europeans, broadly speaking, Americans are more isolationist, less well-informed about politics and science, less interested in the fate of other nations, and more likely to hold absurd beliefs (astrology, alien abduction, virgin birth, Uri Geller…).  The difference is not pronounced—people here (I live in Vienna) swallow all kinds of nonsense too—but no one I know here, from the Greens through the Socialist to the Freedom Party (sort of a neonazi neocon group), likes Bush and everyone (not just my Muslim friend) thinks the war in Iraq is an unmitigated disaster.  Why the difference?

My suspicions:  First of all, European countries are small, the US is big.  Europeans have had to cope with many different neighbors, languages, and cultures for centuries.  It’s easier for Americans to think that their nation is the whole world.  Second, television.  The average American watches more than four hours of TV a day, the average European about an hour less.  Television sucks out your brain, especially the simplistic pap that passes for entertainment in the States.  Third, Europeans walk more. Many of my friends, like myself, don’t even have cars.  Driving around in a metal box and seeing the world through safety glass can lead one to think that it’s all just another TV program.

On the other hand, maybe the main difference is that the US is a major military power, and power corrupts. Americans are manipulated to support stupid wars because the powers that be need the oil, and can get it, through force of arms.

My comparison, anecdotal and undocumented as it is, is between the US and Europe because the standards of living and access to information are comparable—who can blame the Kokovoko Islanders for being superstitious?

Anyway, I’d like to hear your opinions on this.

In Bermuda, the few roads on the islands are very narrow with lots of curves.  The population density of Bermuda is also very high.  Buses are a very popular mode of transportation; and surprisingly, the bus drivers are very friendly and helpful.  The most striking method of transportation are the mopeds/motorbikes.  Motorbikes are everywhere in Bermuda and their drivers appear to be totally crazy.  I have no idea how many motorbike accidents there are every year, but a bus driver said that she sees a motorbike accident about every week.  To me it was very strange to see a man wearing a Bermuda business suit (shirt, tie, jacket, Bermuda shorts, and knee high stockings) riding a motorbike with a model name of “Skuppy” or other silly name.

I spent about 15 months in the US (I think that’s more than enough to see and understand a lot of things, that were said in this thread). I lived in a suburb in the DC metropoloitan area but I had to go to work/school/shopping/beer/anywhere by car. My God , there were no sidewalks on the streets where I lived. You barely see someone walking, only cars, cars, cars. Most of the people have almost-no-labour jobs, eat crappy fast food, sit on their asses and watch crappy TV shows. Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t these enough reasons to look like a whale? I took 495/95 Interstate every weekday, and almost every day there was an accident on the road, some minor, but most of them fatal. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t say that Americans cannot drive. They just do not want to improve, they don’t care (I believe many people already said that they are ignorant). How many of them can operate a manual gearbox? How the DMV (or MVA on some states) can give you a license if you cannot drive a car, manufactured in the US? (that’s about stick cars). I got to know a lot of people there, and to help GeekMom with her theory I’m going to say: Yes, Americans that have spent some time abroad are more wise, intelligent, open-minded, and they do know that there is a world outside their borders. As for the Americans that did not go abroad, most of them are (sorry for the language) dumb and ignorant morons. I spent some time with students from UMD, and guess what, most of them do think that Bush is a moron, and the whole “we go there to free them and give them democracy and freedom from the tyrant” is a pile am steaming horseshit. They know it’s about the oil, proving that educated Americans are not stupid (at least most of them). I tried to discuss that with an old guy. My, what a disaster. Another old guy, that spent some years in Europe was more willful to listen. In the end I want to say that no matter if you are American, European, Asian, African or whatever, if you are dumb ignorant moron and do not want to change that, you will be dumb ignorant moron for the rest of your life, regardless of your race, location, gender, and so on. Too bad most Americans are not qute ready to learn

Thank you for painting an entire nation with your massive brush of self-righteousness.  Truly, how many times are you going to call people dumb and ignorant morons?  Not that you even attempt to factually back your claims—the overwhelming impression is that your definition of ‘dumb and ignorant moron’ is simply ‘they are not me’.

Americans actually have one of the lowest fatality rates per miles driven in the world.  A bit of googling shows that as of 1996, we have the fourth lowest reported rate at 1.7 fatalities per million miles driven.  Perhaps your username is not indictive of your country of origin, but for the record, Germany had a fatality rate of 2.5 per million miles driven.  Dumb and ignorant Germans.

As for ‘they just do not want to improve…‘, the rate for American driving fatalities has dropped and held at 1.5 for the past four years.

And what pray tell does operating a manual gearbox have to with ignorance?  Ok, I will concede that those who do not know how to drive a stick are ignorant of driving a stick.  How that can be indicative of greater personal failings is beyond me.  I personally am completely ignorant as to the techniques used to handcrank a motor into starting.  My dependence upon electric starters has led me into handcrank ignorance.  Woe is me!

I so wish that there existed a transcript of your ‘what a disaster’ discussion ‘with an old guy’.  Is your face to face technique the same as your posting technique?  I can imagine it was a disaster if you started telling some fellow about how dumb and ignorant Americans are and that his opinion was ‘a pile am [sic] steaming horseshit’.

I find it very telling that your praise of an American who had spent time in Europe was that he ‘was more willing to listen’.  Not that he was willing to engage in dialogue.  Not that he held a rational yet opposing viewpoint.  Simply that he was willing to listen to your generally incoherent ranting takes him out of the default American dumb and ignorant category?

One final thought.  You are obviously completely ignorant on the concept of paragraphs.  Please.  Use them.

A second final thought.  For the record, I exclusively drive stickshifts and think initiating Gulf War II was a colossal mistake and its execution at a strategic level has been a neverending stream of cockups.

Third final thought.  I kinda forgot about this window and am submitting the post several hours after the writing.  I stand by my negative reaction to the previous post, but I was in an existing hostile mood caused by reading creationist/fundie ranting as linked by PZ.  I feel much better now and apologize if this post went over the top.

Einhander, I am an American who has never been overseas yet I’m quite adept with a stickshift.  There are many subjects of which I am ignorant and fewer that I’ve taken trouble to learn about.

Meaning what, in aggregate?  If you travel anywhere you will meet people who know things you do not know. And all cultures have ridiculous elements.  Shall we give you a test of American culture?

Ohh, your rant made me so mad I’m just going to get in my SUV and drive two blocks down to McDonald’s for a double quarter-pounder with fries and a shake.  Hope I don’t have a fatal accident on the way!  Then I’ll drive home, smoke a cigarette or three and watch a game show.

How many of them can operate a manual gearbox?

And you enjoyed driving a stick in stop & go traffic?  Most people don’t, hence the vast numbers of automatics.

Sean & decrepitoldfool, you read the post but missed its points. Relax a little and read it again, and this time pay attention to the big picture, not the details…

I think your point was pretty clear, Einhander.  I was just mocking you for it.

Einhander Bulgaria Posted on 01/14/2007 at 11:52 AM

No, you obviosly did not. Besides mockery is considered rather stupid and ignorant thing to do, so go ahead and continue…

Sometimes mockery is all you deserve.  The US is an incredibly diverse country which you dismiss with broad generalizations based on errors of fact.  You conflated issues that are at most tangentially related as if one led inevitably to the others.

Our country suffers from the “winner take all” nature of our political structure, I’ll give you that.  It allows a party that has 51% of the votes to run away unrestrained.  Hopefully we’ll get back to a divided (that is, checked and balanced) government soon.  The latest elections are a step in that direction.

I agree on the second part of your post.
As for the first one, as you can see I am not the only one to think that Americans need to be more open-minded and try to see and consider things from another point of view from time to time, and that’s a fact (hopefully not a wrong one).

Why are Americans so Stupid?

Answer: Mainstream media, Christianity, consumerism, the public education system and fear of the Boogie Man aka Osama Bin Laden (the MUSLIM, ARABIC TOWEL-HEAD terrorists are everywhere, watch out, they might blow up your house in the name of allah! etc etc)

decrepitoldfool United States Posted on 01/14/2007 at 12:31 PM

Yes.  Which, unfortunately, some Americans make an effort not to do - “With us or against us” and all that crap.  For several years those Americans have held exclusive power with visible results.

I am currently reading Susan Jacoby’s FREETHINKERS: A history of American Secularism. What strikes me is how some of the same issues are in play that were active in Revolutionary times.  And, how reflective of human nature those issues are.  Unfortunately I do not know how to raise the “War On Idiocy” to the status currently occupied by the “War! On! Terror!“

Unfortunately that “With us or against us” crap is widely spread all around the world, not only in the USA. But what can you, me or anywone else do about it? Maybe try not to believe so blindly in certain things but rather question and asses them…

P.S. Do you think that the US media (TV, press, etc.) are engaged in somekind of brainwashing process, like in some communist countries not so long ago?

decrepitoldfool United States Posted on 01/14/2007 at 12:56 PM

Certainly some of them are.  Watch an hour of FOX news (I don’t recommend more than that).  The difference is that alternative media sources are available unlike the totalitarian countries.  Hope it stays that way.

Einhander Bulgaria Posted on 01/14/2007 at 01:07 PM

I agree on that.
OK then, another question: Who is responsible for the actions of that certain medias and for how long has this been going on? (sorry, that’s actually 2 questions)

I…think that Americans need to be more open-minded and try to see and consider things from another point of view from time to time, and that’s a fact (hopefully not a wrong one).

I don’t see how a statement about what you think could not be factual, unless, and this is a plausible possibility, you suffer from delusional thinking at times.  That would further make sense of your remark that you hoped you hadn’t misstated what you thought.

Of course they are engaging in subtle brainwashing to alter opinions.  Watch any show where the husband is depicted as a lazy incompetent moron.  Or celebrities like Paris Hilton being promoted as ‘hot’.  FOX news is just blatant fascist propaganda for the brainwashed neo-con followers to feed off of and feel ‘manly’.

Well, I don’t know exactly how long they have been using propaganda here, but I do know they made a lot of racist propaganda during World War 2 depicting the Japanese badly and that they had Disney make propaganda against Hitler.

I suppose they’ve been creating propaganda since the printing press was invented.

that they had Disney make propaganda against Hitler
