Bush is looking into wind-powered cars, which is surprising, but then again, he has an intimate understanding of blow.

Somehow I can’t imagine a tax cut would help.  The oil companies would just raise the price a little more because they have a new 18.4 cent window to play with since everyone will buy gas anyways.  I’d like to see gas hit $10 a gallon so people start walking or biking their lazy butts around and only using the car for serious travel.  I’d bet a year of that and average life expectancy of citizens goes up at least 3 years.  Of course the government should also throw a TON more money into research for renewable fuels and set up some kind of gas welfare for people that are handicapped, old, pregnant, etc. so they can get their groceries too.  I don’t expect them to walk a mile to a grocery store.

Seriously- Europeans have had much higher gas prices than Americans for years, and that has certainly played a role in their preference for smaller cars and better public transportation.  After living in Austria, it’s mindboggling for me, when I’m visiting family in California, to walk the six blocks to Safeway, seeing nary a pedestrian, to find the parking lot full of SUV’s, many of whose owners undoubtedly bitch about gas prices.  Global warming?  Who cares?

I now live in New Zealand, and they have a car ownership rate that is as high as California (!!!) with 1.8 cars per household. And their major city (my new home) has CRAPPY public transport. Less than 5% usage, when in Europe, the ratio for such a city should be 30-40%. Maybe at least 20% if you take into account that Auckland is quite spread out (suburbia in a very NZ way).

They are slowly waking up to it. Slowly is the word, sadly.

I, as the crazy European, have simply gotten myself a flat right in the city right next to work. I get a bit of a walk every day, save 1 or more hours each day NOT stuck in traffic jams, and get the pleasure of telling people that I am a traffic engineer who has no car. Financial savings 500 Euros per month at least.

Downside: they don’t even sell good bicycles :-(

7-11 pumps are $3.99/gal for mid & premium grade
and the really mean it. 89 octane $3.09/gal.
diesel, $2.29 /gal, ethanol - $4.85/gal

as it turns out, one ONLY needs fuel higher than
89 octane for high compression of supercharged motors. it doesnt improve milage at all. I guess 7-11
is doing the idiots a favor and helping them choose.
most folks dont know that octane rating is a way of stating a fuels resistance to detonation, or its general stability.

if it isnt supercharged, odds are 87/89 will do the job just fine. inflate those tires, keep the air filter clean and
keep it under a hundred if its an issue for you.
