Republican Steve King thinks he’s solved the problem of Mexicans illegally entering the country: Treat them like cattle:

KING: So when I get down there and sit on that border, what I do is I come to this conclusion, we can’t shut that off unless we build a fence and a wall. I want to put the fence in, but I want to put a wall in, and I designed one. And this just simply is the desert floor – put a trench in that desert floor. We have the ability to put together a machine that would be a slip form machine that would lay a footing about like this, Mr. Speaker.

And if I give you a look at the end of that, that’s so you’d have that about five feet deep underneath the ground. It’d keep the wall from tipping over. We’d pour a notch in it that’ll allow us to put pre-cast panels in. And it would sit, it would look like this, and this would be flush with the desert floor. And then you’d bring in pre-cast concrete walls – ten fee wide, thirteen and a half feet tall. It’d construct itself to be a twelve foot finished wall, just like that, Mr. Speaker. Drop these panels in together, in this fashion. Just take a crane and drop them in. Our little construction company could build a mile a day of this pretty easily, once you’ve got your system going. The whole two thousand miles are not going to work that way, but a lot of it will work this way, Mr. Speaker.

And so to just wrap up this construction, this’d be an example, then, of how that wall would look. Now you could also deconstruct it the same way. You could take it back down. If somehow they got their economy working and got their laws working in Mexico we could pull this back out just as easy as we could put it in. We could open it up again or we could open it up and let livestock run through there, whatever we choose.

I also say we need to do a few other things on top of that wall, and one of them being to put a little bit of wire on top here to provide a disincentive for people to climb over the top or put a ladder there. We could also electrify this wire with the kind of current that would not kill somebody, but it would simply be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it. We do that with livestock all the time.

That’s Compassionate Conservatism for you.

You can watch a video clip of King describing his amazing electrified wall over at Think Progress.

Discourage, not kill. If that’s not compassionate, I don’t know what is.

We do that with livestock all the time.

I wonder if he thought that through. I think the message here is not that Mexican illegals are cattle, but that it’s a selective breeding program. In effect, he’s saying: “We only want the smart and hardy illegals that can’t be discouraged by a trifle like an electrified fence.”

Well, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Should Mexican border guards be equipped with electric cattle prods that they can use on American cattle, I mean tourists?

Politics is answers that lobbyists pay for.

Heck, why stop there?  Hell, we should build a really deep barrier under the ground to prevent tunneling.  Make the wall thicker, you know kinda thick enough to post guards atop.  We can probably get some tips on that from the Germans, seem to recall they had something like this in Berlin for awhile…

I like how he mentions “their little company” probably one of his lobbyists is pushing him to do this with some nice fat stacks of cash.

In any event, the problem won’t go away with a wall.  We need to resolve the reason that Mexican citizens are entering the US illegally, and part of the reason is right here in the US.  If companies and people were punished for hiring them, then they would probably stop doing it, and the flow of illegals would slack off to a trickle.  Of course, our friend here with his wall probably doesn’t even want to admit that as a cause of the problem in the first place.

This approach is typical - don’t work on underlying problems, put a thousand-mile long bandaid on it.  Too many people in prison?  Build more prisons (or if you were smarter, work on recidivism).  Too many Mexicans coming in?  Build a giant-assed wall (or if you were smarter, concentrate on a partnership with Mexico to solve the economic problems and make an economically stronger region.)

In effect, he’s saying: “We only want the smart and hardy illegals that can’t be discouraged by a trifle like an electrified fence.

Offtopic: I saw a report about a Cuban refugee who modified his pickup truck to become an amphibious vehicle, and was driving it to Florida!.  Hell, if I saw somebody that clever coming in, I’d give ‘em an escort.  They could star on Monster Garage.  /offtopic

If companies and people were punished for hiring them…

I absolutely agree.  I mean heaven forbid these shit for brains representatives actually have our country enforce the laws they pushed through.

From the great wall of China, to ...

Our little construction company ...

... any comment I can think of sounds less bizarre than the original concept of the wall.
Surely no one’s taking him seriously. LOL

I’ve discovered that it all boils down to brain wiring: your brain is wired to worship magic or it isn’t, either it’s wired to utilize logic or it isn’t, either it’s analytical of myths or it isn’t.

He’s only now letting us know what actions he might take against those not like him. We’ve been finding for some time that if you or a close friend is gay, an active woman, from a foreign non-European country in the last 60 years, or free thinking, he doesn’t like you.

He wants to build a big wall to keep out the unwanted “others”. Now THAT’S an original idea!

Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil’s pawn. Alone among God’s primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother’s land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home, and yours. Shun him, for he is the harbinger of death.

Just like they discourage some people from voting, but do not kill them for it.

Okay, cheap shot. Still deserved in many cases.

Heck, why stop there?  Hell, we should build a really deep barrier under the ground to prevent tunneling.

Yeah, my idea exactly. As it is, it will take them half the night to tunnel, then they are through. Or over the top. Ladders can be built to spec if there is a demand.

Make the wall thicker, you know kinda thick enough to post guards atop.  We can probably get some tips on that from the Germans, seem to recall they had something like this in Berlin for awhile…

Didn’t work. 2000 got over or around, or under it per year. And we had ALL the works, including mines, sensors, lights, barb wire, electric barb wire, electric bar wire with sensors and dogs. Heck, we probably had dogs with mines too.

“We only want the smart and hardy illegals that can’t be discouraged by a trifle like an electrified fence.

In fact, already doing that (at least many countries the world over are doing it). Nowadays, being ppoor and downtrodden doesn’t help you, unless you got a lot of luck to fit into one of the often relatively small ‘charity’ migrant quotas. Otherwise, nowadays a tertiary degree, a job offer and a young body is what gets you in.

I am not saying thats all evil (hey, I profited of just such a system when I got my New Zealand residency just last week).

I am not so sure myself however, where I sit on the fence there. Its easy to understand why a country would want to let only those in that are really needed.

Offtopic: I saw a report about a Cuban refugee who modified his pickup truck to become an amphibious vehicle, and was driving it to Florida!.  Hell, if I saw somebody that clever coming in, I’d give ‘em an escort.

I heard he got caught by the US Coast Guard before he got ashore (because apparently that is the magic ticket) three times, what I heard.

Should be building a submarine next… except I read that he had ruined himself with his attempts to get over the last couple times.
