This article pretty much speaks for itself:

U.S. last in preventable death rate - UPI.com

BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 8 (UPI)—The United States ranks last among 19 industrialized nations when it comes to deaths that could have been prevented.

The report by The Commonwealth Fund, published in the journal Health Affairs, said 101,000 deaths per year could have been prevented by access to timely and effective healthcare. The top performers were France, Japan and Australia.

Ellen Nolte and Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine looked at deaths “amenable to healthcare before age 75 between 1997-98 and 2002-03.”

The researchers found that while other countries saw these types of deaths decline by an average of 16 percent, the United States experienced only a 4 percent decline. “It is notable that all countries have improved substantially except the U.S.,” said Nolte, lead author of the study.

There is no good excuse for this. None.

The people who are deathly opposed to socialized healthcare boggle my mind.

Most of the opposition I’ve come across seems to dwell on paying for somebody else’s medical expenses, as if we don’t end up doing that anyway, while greatly enriching middlemen and insurance companies.  rolleyes

I’ve come across the same crowd as Benior but have also seen the line, “There’s no constitutional right to Health Care.” Which is just as lame. Obviously our Fore Fathers could not have thought of everything America will ever need for the next infinity years WTF! An organization is only as good as it’s lowest performing members, and a quick way to make it better is improve things for those at the bottom. Health Care is an easy way for make sure everyone has the best opportunity to prosper in this country. Raise my taxes I don’t give a fuck! It’s about time something changed.

My thoughts exactly.  Consi once said “Why should an elderly couple in Dakota pay for my health care” (or pretty close).  That’s what any kind of insurance does- Life, Car, House etc- the insurance companies intend to take more than they pay (or else no profit).  You will probably pay more than you get.  Some people get more than they pay- surely the same principle.

There’s no constitutional right to Health Care.”

Name me one place where there is a constitutional right for Christianity to be recognised as the chief religeon of the US, and have Congress prayer meetings, or deny atheists office.

Of course there’s a good excuse for this.  We have to stop Saddam Hussein’s WMD’s.
