Nothing warms the cockles of my heart like seeing a true hypocrite get his comeuppance. This story is all over several other blogs so you may have read about it already, but if you haven’t then here’s the scoop. It seems that Rep. Ed Schrock is a two-term Republican congressman from Virginia’s Second District and is considered one of the most conservative members of Congress second only to Dennis Hastert according to The National Journal in 2003. He was a co-sponsor of the Federal Marriage Amendment, he opposes any rights for gay people including non-discrimination in employment, and he carries a 92% rating for his voting record in The Christian Coalition 2003 Voting Guide.
As it turns out, Rep. Ed Schrock appears to spend his spare time looking for hot gay lovin’ on popular gay telephone dating services from the very folks he’s so determined to oppose in his politics. The folks at BlogActive helped bring this to light by circulating tape recordings of the upstanding Mr. Schrock shakin’ his love thang on the phone.
When the story of Congressman Ed Schrock (R-VA-2) first came to me, I was quite skeptical. After all, Congressman Schrock’s district includes parts of Hampton and Norfolk and all of Virginia Beach, home to no less than NINE military facilities and Pat Robertson’s Regent University! Nevertheless, the activities of Congressman Schrock have been documented and verified as thoroughly as any I have seen come before me and what I have learned is, well, ScHrOCKING!
Congressman Ed Schrock has made a habit of rendezvousing with gay men via the MegaMates/ MegaPhone Line, an interactive telephone service on which men place ads and respond to those ads to meet each other. What makes this story more amazing? Congressman Schrock not only voted for the homophobic Marriage Protection Act, but he also signed on as a CO-SPONSOR of the Federal Marriage Amendment!
This guy is easily one of the most anti-gay politicians out there so why am I not surprised to find out he’s cheating on his wife by seeking out gay sex? Because there are so many people out there like the fellow who runs the blog Scattered Words which Brock has written about previously here on SEB. Schrock appears to be a classic case of someone over-compensating because of their own self-loathing and in a way it’s kinda sad, but with as hateful as this guy’s comments have been I’m not that upset he’s been caught out.
He appears to realize that his career is at an end as he’s announced he’s dropping his reelection bid and resigning “effective immediately.”
U.S. Rep. Ed Schrock withdrew from his re-election race this afternoon, citing unspecified allegations.
“In recent weeks, allegations have surfaced that have called into question my ability to represent the citizens of Virginia’s Second Congressional Distict,” Shrock said in a press release.
Schrock, who would have been seeking his third term, did not elaborate on the nature of the allegations.
“After much thought and prayer, I have come to the realization that these allegations will not allow my campaign to focus on the real issues facing our nation and region,” the statement said. “Therefore, as of today, I am stepping aside and will no longer be the Republican nominee for Congress in Virginia’s Second Congressional District.
It’s hard to say if this is a pragmatic move or a response to the validity of the accusations. This move gives the Republicans a week to find a replacement as the ballot can’t be changed after 5PM on Friday so it’s possible they figured finding a replacement in time would be less risky than trying to challenge the accusations and having Schrock lose the election. Whatever the reason, I’m glad he’s been exposed for the hypocrite he is.

This is an AP story that ran today in either the NY Times or the Washington Post. Here is a link to the article in SFGATE.com.
I believe this is the group I’ve heard about that is outing gays who are, in some manner, working against gay rights. They best be right.
This oufit also intends to go against staffers. I have mixed thoughts about that aspect of their campaign. (Clock running class convenes in 15 minutes.)
