Truly educational children’s programming.

They just don’t make kid’s educational shows like they used to. Take the children’s show Rainbow which aired during the 70’s and 80’s in the U.K. and which was VERY educational, if the clip at that link is anything to go by. It’s a segment all about sharing and playing with your friends.

Rainbow was, indeed, a good, enjoyable and entertaining/educational show by the now “defunct” Thames Television) - but I didn’t like it when they changed Bungle (the bear): but, I must confess, I was growing a bit old for it. The theme tune was good and schoolkids made up a few “alternative lyrics” for it..

Anyway - the “Twangers” episode wasn’t a “proper” episode as far as I am aware. The television companies in the UK had a series of “Outtake” shows and this was meant to be an outtake where the cast members were just messing about. Ok, it was a setup - but little kids didn’t actually sit down and watch it

I remember about ten years ago their used to be a series on PBS called Square One.  It was a half hour long and 15 minutes would be spent in a corny dragnet parody with two detectives using math to solve some murder or robbery.  The other fifteen minutes would be a few short cartoons about geography or history.  I watched it everyday after coming home from school and then after that was over I would watch Carmen Sandiego.  Those were good educational shows.  TV sucks nowadays.

Square One RULED!  All my kids watched it, and I usually watched it with them.  I loved the Dragnet parody.

Oh man, I miss Square One and 3-2-1 Contact (think that’s the proper title).  Great programming =).

“Anyway - the “Twangersâ€? episode wasn’t a “properâ€? episode as far as I am aware.”

That’s right - it was the Christmas tape, I believe. However, there are other clips floating around the world from Rainbow from when they were actually making it with...shall we say...rather more specific bloopers wink There was a show a while ago over here where they were looking at just how many childrens’ TV presenters let rip like Tourettes stereotypes when things goofed.

The saddest one was Geoffrey - the token adult in the bunch, who nobody could ever take seriously again. There was an advert for a bank savings account or similar a couple of years ago showing him in his current life as a taxi driver, wishing he’d made better investment decisions.

Fake or not, it still had me rolling on the floor with laughter.

Oddly enough, though, I’ve not heard of most of these other shows you guys have mentioned. I remember growing up with Sesame Street, Mr. Dressup, The Friendly Giant, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Romper Room, The Polka Dot Door, and my all-time favorite: Captain Kangaroo.

Don’t forget The Banana Splits!

I know I’ve been getting some laughs recently by watching old episodes of DangerMouse and Count Duckula (both starring David Jason of “Only Fools and Horses” fame), old episodes of The Goodies, and Magic Roundabout and there’s a lot of “in jokes” which only adults could understand… (all UK TV programmes by the way).

GM, I’m compelled to agree.

One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more....
