Three asshat teens do over $200,000 in damage to local church.

It never ceases to amaze me how idiotic some kids can be. Rev. Bernard Fraser of Taylor, Michigan woke up around 3 a.m. Tuesday and spotted three teens through a rectory window who were in the middle of vandalizing St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church.

3 men charged with felonies in vandalism at Taylor church

The church, at 6442 Pelham Road near I-94, was broken into early Tuesday by vandals who broke three life-sized statues of Jesus and the church’s patron saint, the Blessed Virgin Mary, worth about $10,000 each. They smashed stained-glass windows, toppled the crucifix, sprayed fire extinguishers over the organ and stole musical instruments.

At Taylor Catholic School, windows and desks were damaged, nearly a dozen smaller statues of Mary were broken or used to knock locks off doors, and computers and a camera were stolen. At the gymnasium, equipment was stolen, and food and pop were used in an attempt to destroy the wood floor, said Taylor Police Detective Aaron Shrewsbury.
...
Matthew Gerick, 17, Adam Byron, 17, and Vincent Lee Watkins, 19, are charged with nine felony counts, including first-degree home invasion, breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property worth more than $20,000 and larceny of property worth about $50,000. The most serious charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

As if that wasn’t enough, one of the three teens confessed to having urinated in the baptismal font. This is what I think of when people use the word “anti-religious” to describe someone, but as it turns out that’s not the motivation behind this idiocy:

Shrewsbury said the suspects confessed. “They said they were bored and wanted to have some fun,“ he said.

They did all this because they were bored?!? How big of an asshole do you have to be to cause $200,000 worth of damage to someone else’s property, Church or otherwise, just because you’re friggin’ bored?!? What the fuck is wrong with these people that they can’t find a better way to pass the time than to cause misery and loss to others who have done nothing to wrong them?? For that matter, how friggin’ stupid do you have to be to choose a Church across the street from your house?!? Hopefully these morons will spend some time in jail where I’m sure they’ll find plenty to keep them from getting bored.

I said: Quick, IDM, provide context for them before they lose their minds as they’ve already lost their ability to create a hypothetical so “abhorrent” that it would include going to a church.

I thought it was clear that I was mocking your fellow atheist WBOTH for not being able to think of a reason why you may still attend church services.

Quest for knowledge, I gotcha.  Plus, I may have worded it like shit due to a multitude of reasons, but I meant it as an honest question so no offense meant there.

And since when did I become an athiest?

Mirth, honor and hatred.  All are me, throughout and complete, and I indulge when and where I choose.  Therein, I will have the knowledge of self and objective, the fury to carry it out ruthlessly, and the smile of a deed done and peace to come to bring me home.

Don’t pay any attention to me.  I’m just here to add my name to the list of atheists who (occasionally) go to church, for various reasons.  Mea maxima culpa, but sometimes it’s appropriate.  Besides, some of those believers are pretty cute…

That is how I found out about Unitarian/Universalists, I went to church for a funeral.  The funeral was about his life and the impact that he had made.  Death is the natural end of life and immortality was the impact made on the lives of others.

While I was married, I didn’t usually go to church, but my wife was active in several activities at her (Catholic) church.  I worked at several functions, such as carnivals, various dinners, and even repaired a PA system.  I found it fun and I liked the people.  Most of the Catholics that I encountered were totally different from the Born Again Christians that I have met.  I made no secret of my not being Catholic and nobody seemed to have an issue with it.  Many of the Catholics that I knew from her church went to Mass every Saturday night or Sunday morning, did the whole kneeling thing in church, did Communion, and all that.  There was a crusifix somewhere in the house, a case of beer in the refrigerator, and a package of birth control pills in the wife’s purse.

Close, but not quite.  Change the beer to Belvedere and make her my ex-wife.

I was just letting you guys know that these guys HAVE changed their lives around. All three of them are very close friends of mine. I don’t think that calling them “Stupid Evil Bastards” is in any way correct. They made a mistake and all three of them regret it… It’s not like they harmed anyone and they did their time. They do not deserve to have people telling them how they are. They know who they are and so do their friends. They are all three very sweet people and putting shit up about them on the internet just shows that you have nothing better to do with your lives then to put others down.

Les United States Posted on 09/29/2006 at 01:35 PM

CLynn, as good as it is to hear that these fellows have changed their lives around that in no way changes the fact that they acted like assholes in the past. Note that I never called them Stupid Evil Bastards as that’s the name of my blog. No, what I called them was asshats because that’s what you are when you do $200,000 damage to someone else’s private property because you were “bored.“

Their crime wasn’t a “mistake” - it was done intentionally with full knowledge that what they were doing was wrong and illegal. They fully deserve to have people reminding them of what asshats they were in the past and, if they’re truly responsible, they’ll own up to that fact.

It’s great they have friends like you to try and defend what little honor they may still have, but you do them and yourself a grave disservice by trying to downplay and dismiss their past actions. If being told what asshats they were makes them feel bad, good, that’s how they SHOULD feel.

The thread was dormant until you came back and stirred the shit up again.

I call bullshit on them being sweet people; sweet people do not deliberately destroy things.  Mean people can change, but they do not become sweet people overnight.  If they have already done their time, it is obvious that they did not do enough time.

Although they may not have physically harmed anyone, I am sure that many people feel violated by the acts that these ‘sweet people’ committed.  I am also sure that some of the people are deeply saddened by the destruction of the religious icons.

The thing that you people seem to forget.. is that you do NOT know these guys. You have never personally met them, you have never held a conversation with them.. most of you probably don’t even know what they look like. Yes they made a MISTAKE.. and yes I meen MISTAKE.. everyone makes a mistake at some point in their lives, it just happens to be that they made a huge one.. they did their time and they paid their fines.. you cannot judge them if you do not know them.. You should really think to get to know someone before you talk shit about them.. I know that what they did in the past was wrong but its seriously not like they killed or raped someone..

That’s all true and has no bearing on our ability to make value judgements about the incident this entry was written about.

Yes they made a MISTAKE.. and yes I meen MISTAKE.. everyone makes a mistake at some point in their lives, it just happens to be that they made a huge one.. they did their time and they paid their fines.. you cannot judge them if you do not know them..

I most certainly can judge them without knowing them. If I had been asked to be on the jury hearing their trial that’s

exactly

what I’d have to be able to do.

Again you try to downplay the seriousness of their crime by claiming it was merely a “huge mistake.“ A huge mistake would’ve been something stupid like accidentally burning the church down because they were playing around with illegal fireworks in the parking lot. Note the lack of INTENT in that example. Instead the crime they are guilty of is one the had fully INTENDED to commit for purely idiotic reasons.

You should really think to get to know someone before you talk shit about them.. I know that what they did in the past was wrong but its seriously not like they killed or raped someone..

So that makes it all OK in your book, eh? I’m beginning to suspect you’re as big an asshat as they are.

Ok so now that I express my opinion to you.. not insulting you or anything, you think that you have a right to call me names?? Yea that shows good character. I was just trying to prove my point to you and I get insulted.. That just goes to show that you judge people without knowing the whole story.. You think that I “downplay” what they did.. I am just saying that they did their time and they know what they did was wrong.. and by the way “asshat”?? Come on now, can’t you think of anything better than that??

It’s somewhat ironic that you came here and chided us for expressing our opinions and now you’re complaining that you’re being chided for expressing your own. Hypocrisy will get you no where.

Yea that shows good character. I was just trying to prove my point to you and I get insulted..

Certainly no worse of character than you’ve shown by trying to downplay the seriousness of your friends’ crimes.

That just goes to show that you judge people without knowing the whole story.. You think that I “downplay” what they did.. I am just saying that they did their time and they know what they did was wrong..

Yep, I judge people without knowing the whole story all the time. You do too. Everyone does. It’s a fact of life. Get used to it.

and by the way “asshat”?? Come on now, can’t you think of anything better than that??

Sure, how about “dumbfuck?“ I was trying to cut you some slack, but if you insist…

Oh and one more thing.. It’s Adam Byrom, not Byron.. and all three of them got out within 15 months because of good behavior

Good for them. I hope they’ve honestly learned their lesson, but with friends like you telling them that all they did was a simple mistake, I suspect we’ll be hearing about them in the news again.

But, more obligations dictate otherwise.

After all, when i see someone rolling in a puddle of mud i am (always) compelled to call attention to such.
