It never ceases to amaze me how idiotic some kids can be. Rev. Bernard Fraser of Taylor, Michigan woke up around 3 a.m. Tuesday and spotted three teens through a rectory window who were in the middle of vandalizing St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church.

3 men charged with felonies in vandalism at Taylor church

The church, at 6442 Pelham Road near I-94, was broken into early Tuesday by vandals who broke three life-sized statues of Jesus and the church’s patron saint, the Blessed Virgin Mary, worth about $10,000 each. They smashed stained-glass windows, toppled the crucifix, sprayed fire extinguishers over the organ and stole musical instruments.

At Taylor Catholic School, windows and desks were damaged, nearly a dozen smaller statues of Mary were broken or used to knock locks off doors, and computers and a camera were stolen. At the gymnasium, equipment was stolen, and food and pop were used in an attempt to destroy the wood floor, said Taylor Police Detective Aaron Shrewsbury.
...
Matthew Gerick, 17, Adam Byron, 17, and Vincent Lee Watkins, 19, are charged with nine felony counts, including first-degree home invasion, breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property worth more than $20,000 and larceny of property worth about $50,000. The most serious charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

As if that wasn’t enough, one of the three teens confessed to having urinated in the baptismal font. This is what I think of when people use the word “anti-religious” to describe someone, but as it turns out that’s not the motivation behind this idiocy:

Shrewsbury said the suspects confessed. “They said they were bored and wanted to have some fun,” he said.

They did all this because they were bored?!? How big of an asshole do you have to be to cause $200,000 worth of damage to someone else’s property, Church or otherwise, just because you’re friggin’ bored?!? What the fuck is wrong with these people that they can’t find a better way to pass the time than to cause misery and loss to others who have done nothing to wrong them?? For that matter, how friggin’ stupid do you have to be to choose a Church across the street from your house?!? Hopefully these morons will spend some time in jail where I’m sure they’ll find plenty to keep them from getting bored.

And, being prison, I’m betting that being “bored” takes on a whole new, uncomfortable meaning.  Here’s hoping anyway.

I’m not sure I buy the whole boredom shtick.  I wonder what the Hate Crimes act reads like in Michigan.

I’d almost like for the judge to sentence them to go be bored in the Marine Corps.  The draft is just around the corner anyway.

$10,000 for a statue of Mary?!?  I’m in the wrong business.

So what video game was the inspiration for this crime? I ask this because we all know that kids only do bad things because of a video game’s influence.

Probably more like anti-authority assholes.  You don’t do that much damage and insult (like pissing on something) unless you’re really trying to get back at someone or something.  Notice that they went after school grounds and a church, both sources of authority.  Kids don’t seem to spend much time vandalizing, say, the local Chuck E. Cheese’s.

Looking back at my own misspent youth, kids vandalize stuff because it’s there. It’s only as they get older that rebellion plays a part.

I agree, however, that asshats like these deserve a creative punishment that gives them something not-boring to do.

I never vandalized anything...ok maybe I did...once but after being yelled at and having a BB shot at your behind you learn that kind of stuff just isn’t wrth the pain and suffering.

This definitely goes beyond the “harmless kid pranks” category. Still, if “God” were “All Powerfull,” seems He/She could have stopped that activity after only one statue??? wink

Dude, you think THAT’S bad?  I’ve been in Boston for the past two weeks at college, and I come home to find out that the Ukrainian church in my hometown of Colchester BLEW UP.  It wasn’t an act of vandalism (or terrorism for that matter) - some moron left a 30 gallon propane tank open inside, and a random spark ignited the gas, blowing the place off the face of the earth.  Thankfully, no one was in or around the church when it happened, so nobody was hurt, either.  I work at a gas station about 500 feet down the road, so it was pretty shocking to hear about (apparently, my friends house shook a mile away.)Neat huh?

The thing everybody’s freaking out about, however, is that a statue of the Virgin Mary was the only thing unscathed.  Big freakin’ deal (it was probably protected by all the decorations surrounding it).  Google “Colchester, Connecticut” and it’s sure to come up.

If ya ask me, couldn’t have turned out better.  Nobody got hurt, there’s one less church in my town, AND something blew up!!

Man, what a depressing story.  I understand the urge to destroy something, to feel powerful, but as a teenager all I did was throw rocks through a couple of windows at a Nike missle base.  Sounds good, doesn’t it?  But the base had been out of commission for years, was already crumbling, and it was hard to find any unbroken panes to break.  Vandalizing a church like this is beyond the pale.  If this is their idea of “fun”, they must be pretty fucked up.

Hopefully the Judge will hang their asses out to dry over this. Interesting fact that may play a role in the outcome of the sentencing...Judge Salamone’s kids went to that school and his family belongs to the church. Hmmmmm....

I’m not sure if I should be amused or what.  Yay for fucking with a church but if you’re gona mess with a church, mess with one of significance, such as st. peters basicilica.  Demolition is cool, vandalism is just half-assing it.

You’re a dumb ass, Anna, for trying to excuse the idiocy of this crime. You’re also a dumb ass because you assume we’re “god lovin ppl” as I and several other people here are actually atheists.

Being an atheist, however, doesn’t mean you don’t respect other people’s property even if you think such property is being used for silly superstitious nonsense.

Stop being a dumb ass.

Oh dear, it sounds like somebody hasn’t been taking their meds.

anna,

If they really have changed their lives around and regret what they had done, good for them—it does not excuse what they have done.

It doesn’t matter what kind of building they vandalised.  I am an atheist and I would be very pissed off if somebody broke windows at either of the two churches that I go to.

I and the kids that I grew up with never really destroyed property.  Yeah, we blew things up with oxy/acetylene bombs, firecrackers and shotguns.  The things that we blew up or otherwise destroyed had been discarded or abandonded or we had permission to fuck it up.  I was a dumpster diver and frequently found cool things in the dumpsters of a local shopping mall to destroy (or fix and use).  I would never have even considered breaking a window.

How would you feel if instead of breaking the windows of a church, these “sweet ppl” had broken your house windows?

Dear Anna…

Your friends are stupid, and from there actions we can tell they enjoy others misery, which is very bad and makes me sad, I am happy you say that they have changed but it is a little to late. Your posts in caps lock won’t help them, and your insults will not sway us, just make us believe that you are slightly dumb.
So sincerely please get fucked and die…

Wait a tic, itdontmatter, you’re an athiest, yet you go to churches?  Doesn’t going to churches and celebrating negate the lack of belief in the above mentioned?

Or maybe ya just visit, I dunno but make some sense of this please.  Plus, they’re nothing wrong with enjoying the misery of others, just don’t become obsessed with it or in nothing else will you find joy.

Have fun, and Anna, caps lock is utterly pointless in conversation on a place of quality such as SEB, so fuckin stop.

Uh-oh, an atheist that goes to churches.  Is he/she demented?  Has he lost his/her mind?  The masses are frothing at the mouth at the thought of losing an unbeliever.  Quick, IDM, provide context for them before they lose their minds as they’ve already lost their ability to create a hypothetical so “abhorrent” that it would include going to a church.

As to the comments to the young lady, my sentiment is with the commenters.  Unfortunately emotion has gotten the better of the young lass and she has demonstrated poor communication skills, poor socialization skills, bad manners and a lack of grace.  However, if she is to be believed as to her identity, that would make her a teenager.  In spite of the young lady’s character flaws, I can only wonder if responding in kind does not show the same character flaws.

I know of plenty of atheists that still attend churches for a variety of reasons.

As a teen, I was one. I was forced to attend church with my parents (at least for a while, until they came to their senses and allowed me to stay home and catch up on my beauty sleep).

whitebloodoftheheavens and Consigliere, you are assuming that I go to churches that don’t accept athiests as they are.  There is a joke that says that the only time you might hear the words “Jesus Christ” uttered in the church that I go to is when the minister spills coffee on her Geneva gown.

Children are encouraged to attend as many different religious services (or equiv) as possible.  High school level “Sunday School” sessions are more like comparative religion classes.  Parents of teenagers do not think it odd if their children decide to attend a different church, or to attend no church at all.

The church where the first state sanctioned same-sex marriage in the United States was performed is the same denomination as the churches that I attend.  One of the churches in my denomination was founded by John Quincy Adams, another was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and other has John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and their wives buried in the basement.

Some people who attended churches of the same denomination that I go to (I don’t know how many of these were athiests, many were probably nonthiests):

Abigail Adams
John Adams
John Quincy Adams
Ethan Allen
Benjamin Franklin
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Paine
Paul Revere
Adlai Stevenson
William Howard Taft
Alexander Graham Bell
Luther Burbank
Edmond Halley (Edmund Halley)
Samuel F.B. Morse
Florence Nightingale
