Miscellaneous SEB
Thankee, sir.
It is a shame that patriotism has become the refuge of so many scoundrels (though certainly wrapping oneself up the flag of any “love” has been used as a scoundrelly excuse), because I think there’s a lot about this country worth being patriotic about (including the desire to correct those things which one finds shameful or falling short of our own self-professed goals—dissent is as critical part of patriotism as support).
Thus, it’s difficult at times to actually utter a patriotic note, describing one’s love of country and its principles without either watering it down with caveats and apologies (see above) or making people wonder what sort of bill of goods one is selling. Which is a pity, because I think this is, net, a pretty spiffy place to have been born and live in, and our system of constitutional government is pretty special (and worth protecting).
