Dear Senator Clinton:

I read today that your Republican opponent for Senate is making an issue of the fact that you do not support the USA Patriot Act. One of his media ads states “She has put us at risk” of terrorist attack. 

Please allow me to suggest to you the following response:

“Ladies and gentlemen, it has come to my attention that my opponent is making an issue of my opposition to the USA Patriot Act. He would like you to believe that I have put you all in danger. I, on the other hand, would like you to believe in some genuine American patriots you all know of.

230 years ago a number of courageous people created the United States of America. They had all been living comfortable, safe lives as colonial citizens, but they wanted something more - they wanted freedom and liberty. So they declared their independence and wrote a Constitution based on those principles. They knew that by doing so they would most likely be attacked, and they were, with devastating results. Many of them died for their belief in freedom. There were some at that time who thought that was too great a price to pay, but one of those patriots, Benjamin Franklin, replied “Anyone who would sacrifice freedom for security deserves neither.” I agree with Mr. Franklin.

My opponent would like you to be afraid, because he is playing the politics of fear. He wants you to be so afraid that you will wish to accept reductions in your Constitutional freedoms in order to be safer. That’s what he stands for. Personally, I feel the people of New York, and all Americans, are more courageous than that. When we sing about the “Land of the free and the home of the brave” we need to keep in mind that we cannot have the first part without the second.

Osama bin Ladin has declared war on America. There is one way, and only one way, that he can win - if we abandon our core principles of freedom because we are afraid of him. I trust in your courage, and promise I will oppose any effort to undermine your liberty.”

DOF, thanks!  My friends and I have always loved that letter, and quote it often, and always wondered who wrote it.  If you still talk to your ex-bro-in-law, please let him know it still makes the rounds and is well appreciated.

Well, I would think we’d have a reasonable shot at Greenlanders as well as Americans.

Ya I guess technically Greenlanders count.  But if Greenlanders count you should be able to get Chinese, Japanese, and some Russians too.  Man you Canucks got it good.  I guess I can’t blame you for jumping to the Greenlanders either, we Americans tend to be pretty demanding and lazy.
