I don’t have to shake the feeling that they exist.  I have no feeling that God, aliens, demons, or bogey-men exist.  I never really had those kinds of feelings ever.

Gijnabar’s last comment was just more preaching so I removed it. If I wanted to be preached to I’d go to church.

But Smee loves Gijn anyway.  Whenever he does an act of intelligence and rationality, he’s actually doing it in Smee’s name.  But when G commits acts of sinful pride, obtuseness, self-delusion and preaching, he’s doing it in his imaginary little god Jehovah’s name.  But that’s okay, because Smee is not a jealous god, and he doesn’t care if you have any pretend gods before him, because he is a mature and rational god.

Les removed my last comment because I answered to Ingolfson’s feelings about the afterlife of the atheist. I should slow down a little on Les, because it is obviously starting to terrify him, just as he said I was of mice that are trying to steal my cheese.

Gijn- I won’t presume to answer for Les, but speaking for the regulars here, we are interested in discussions about God and the nature of belief and disbelief, but not particularly interested in simply having the Bible quoted at us or being told we’re going to hell.  We’ve heard it all before, most of us know the Bible quite well, and it’s just not that edifying or even entertaining.  Have you checked out the archives here?

The trouble I see with trying to talk with believers such as you is that, as I tried to suggest in my little poem, your belief is a self-contained and sealed world that admits of no logical entrance.  Correct me if I’m wrong.  You believe:

Jesus/the Bible is the Truth
Anything that speaks against this Truth is the work of Satan
Therefore, knowledge is dangerous.

With such a standpoint, there’s not much middle ground to discuss logically, and logical discussion is what we’re interested in, not in simply hearing more fundamentalist blathering (no offence, but try to put yourself in our position).

Why do you believe that it is the Bible that is the Word of God, and not, say, the Koran or the Zendavesta or the Book of Smee?  Because the Christians got to you first, because of geographic proximity.  If you had been born in Arabia or Persia or Smeeland, you would have believed otherwise, and be bound to hell (if your current belief is correct).  A geographic accident- is that how God works?  Hard to believe.

I am certain that if an atheist can exist on a day-to-day basis then they are quite in tune with their own mortality. I strongly doubt any of us fear an ominous looming end.
