Remember Kent Hovind? Of course you do. The last we heard everybody’s favourite creationist nutbar and his creationist nutbar wife were looking at spending the foreseeable future preaching from behind bars. Well, Hovind’s sentence has been handed down, and it’s pretty much what everyone expected.

10 years for ‘Dr. Dino’

Pensacola evangelist Kent Hovind was sentenced Friday afternoon to 10 years in prison on charges of tax fraud.

After a lengthy sentencing hearing that last 5 1/2 hours, U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers ordered Hovind also:

-- Pay $640,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

-- Pay the prosecution’s court costs of $7,078.

-- Serve three years parole once he is released from prison.

Hovind’s wife, Jo Hovind, also was scheduled to be sentenced. Rodgers postponed her sentencing until March 1 to allow her defense attorney an opportunity to argue possible discrepancies in sentencing guidelines.

Prior to his sentencing, a tearful Kent Hovind, also known as “Dr. Dino” asked for the court’s leniency.

“If it’s just money the IRS wants, there are thousands of people out there who will help pay the money they want so I can go back out there and preach,” Hovind said.

Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola, was found guilty in November of 58 federal counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He faced a maximum of 288 years in prison.

Jo Hovind was charged and convicted in 44 of the counts involving evading bank-reporting requirements and faces a maximum of 225 years in prison.

Kent Hovind, who is incarcerated in the Escambia County Jail, will be assigned to a prison by the Bureau of Prisons. Rodgers recommended Kent Hovind be sent to the prison at Saufley Field in Pensacola so he will be close to his family.

It will be up to the Bureau of Prisons, however, to make that determination.

Would it be considered in poor taste to gloat a little over this? Maybe, but that won’t stop me.

I recognise, like and respect konstantin’s upbeet mood, though do not feel compelled, I do not expect happiness of anyone for complicated reasons - that in life it’s not possible to always stay genuinely happy, that sadness has meaning, and people shouldn’t be expected to falsify emotions.

Konstantin may be take a different stance conceptually, and be hard to move, but even so he’s far, far, more pleasent and more human than this guy. I vote for an end to poking fun here, because i’m starting to have some level of respect.

Just theories don’t cut it. For example the atom theory.  How do we know it is true?  Just because of the gold foil experiment.

Without giving ‘definite proof’, it ties in very, very well with what we observe in chemistry, and it would seem almost uncanny to have that level of agreement if it was wrong. If you discard atom theory, you have to at least find another explanation for everything we see, and also say why it isn’t atom theory.

If it was god making these results, it would seem he’s deliberately making results so consistent and patterned that it allows people to believe in another theory that doesn’t involve him - that would meen he wants it to be possible for atheism to exist, that would need an explanation, and I think I may have one for you…

But then there are different sublevels and shapes and atom configurations but if they do not even know how the atom looks like how can they come up with its shapes?

Atomic orbitals, with shapes predicted by a mathematical wavefunction. Basically they’re just ‘probability clouds’ of where you’re likely to find an electron at a certain energy level. So far it fits well to explain theory (i.e. bond enthalpy affected by orbital overlap) and no observation so far challenges it, if it did we’d be forced to re-think.

But why learn something when it is not right, or learn someone’s theories

Providing you eventually defeat the wrong idea in your head, it provided an extra philosophical direction of thought, and even if it’s a lie it might be useful in broadening one’s mind or providing analogies to explain things - to get a bigger point across.

If you would point the light to space and look perpendicular to the light you would not see the light you would see dark

That’s because it’s not coming towards your eyes. However supposing (unrealistically) you were able to see objects as small as photons, and that the speed of light was slow enough that you could see it pass by, then you would see the perpendicular light beam, but it’d look smudgy because light has high wave character, so there’s be high uncertainty in it’s central position

Actually I would love to hear something that contradicts either the Bible or anything else

I have been told there are parts of the bible telling people to kill people who work on the sabath
I have also been told that the bible tells people not to kill (I havn’t read the bible myself)

I read somewhere (maybe here, it was a while back) that there are more than one creation theories in the bible. Point is parts of the bible contradicts other parts of the same book - and not entirely surprising given it has more than one author.

(unrelated) Evolution does not necessarily contradict creation - you can have both in the same theory, it just means you cannot rely entirely on personalised creation to explain all the species we have.

Depression is what he evil tells you

Depression is self destruction. Being depressed doesn’t make someone evil or mean they are listening to the devil, but those who try to make others depressed for no good intention are evil.

I say no good intention, because a person who comes out of depression is more resilient when recovered, and you can intend to make someone depressed to benefit them this way, so long as you are aware of what you’re doing in terms of feelings. Ultimately this arguement is invented to allow justification of pain in life and hell, because it needs a justification if we’re to use a god theory.

Looking at someone’s heart is not looking at the past it not the begging that saves us it’s the end

Your past intentions is an expression of your heart, though it does not define what it currently is. I agree that shallow begging wouldn’t save, because it’s not genuine repentance. I do not see the fairness or reason in only (or more easily) saving people by ‘the end’ - why base it on some unrelated event at some arbitary time?

If you give time then anything can happen

Time is necessary for changes to occur when it takes time for things to move, but as a dimension, time alone won’t give you more matter and energy to play with, it’d just make it possible for what you’ve already got to do stuff.

Antichrist will impersonate God but he will be a person

But outside of the time when he’s alive, he’ll be in spirit form - and if you meet him and don’t know he’s the antichrist, you may be vulnerable. It’d be useful to identify the personality characteristics that make someone good/bad, so you can tell them appart, so you’re not vulnerable.

It is never to late to ask for forgiveness when you live here on earth. If someone dies then that is it, you are done, what you did is what you did.

But we don’t know when we’re going to die - we might not have the chance to get forgiven just because of the way things turned out, even if we would’ve taken that oppertunity given time

By the way, if you wish to use quote boxes, you can copy and paste text between the tags you get when you click the quote button

You can not give him length, size, shape, volume to our God.

If so that’s exactly what prevents our study of him.

That feeling of repentance. Is that the feeling you are talking about?

Any feeling of repentance feels like the pain of looking at myself inwardly, that come from myself - I cannot attribute that to anyone other than me (i.e. not god). Though I suppose god may be able to make you feel +want anything he wanted you to, so I suppose (unrelated) ultimately he could control our decisions despite free will, by telling us what we want.

On cherry picking - your overall perception of any collection of points doesn’t define the actual truthfullness of the individual points. If you break it up into lots of concepts, dealing with each at a time, rather than as a whole, you can filter it and better credit the more deserving points. Merry xmas.

I wish you’d pray less and practice typing more. It would make your inane comments a lot easier to read.

No fair, Last Hussar. You must have stronger faith than I do, my “warm-fuzzy” is a mere 6.90
