The breakup of Iraq is looking like a certainity.

According to various Iraqi government officials it appears Bush’s goal of bringing democracy to a unified Iraq is destined to fail:

“Iraq as a political project is finished,” a senior government official was quoted as saying, adding: “The parties have moved to plan B.” He said that the Shia, Sunni and Kurdish parties were now looking at ways to divide Iraq between them and to decide the future of Baghdad, where there is a mixed population. “There is serious talk of Baghdad being divided into [Shia] east and [Sunni] west,” he said.

Hoshyar Zebari, the Iraqi Foreign Minister, told The Independent in an interview, before joining Mr Maliki to fly to London and then Washington, that in theory the government should be able to solve the crisis because Shia, Kurd and Sunni were elected members of it.

But he painted a picture of a deeply divided administration in which senior Sunni members praised anti-government insurgents as “the heroic resistance”.

So much for Iraq being a shining example for the rest of the Middle East and helping to spread the values of democracy to the region. Or, for that matter, being better off now than when Saddam was in charge. All thanks to President Bush and the Republican Party! Way to go!

And the Kurds in the North, I’d hope.
I wonder if it could work.
India and Pakistan were partitioned but they’ve had border tensions for years.
Poor Bull$hit. God gave him incorrect advice. Amazing. I thought hehe was infallible. long face

Mmmm. Didn’t read the original correctly.
The early statement was about dividing Iraq and then it switched to dividing Bagdad.
Shit. Dividing Bagdad won’t work.

Why not do what bush wants? Convert everyone to Christianity. No more Shia, Kurd and Sunni problems!

Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil’s pawn. Alone among God’s primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother’s land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home, and yours. Shun him, for he is the harbinger of death.

If the report is accurate, it just goes to show that removing an oppressive regime that lords it over a pressure cooker full of an ethnic and/or religious soup doesn’t mean that the pressure is released. It means plugging up and the safety valve and turning the heat up…

In theory, taking the feuding parties apart would make a lot of sense. But you can bet that they will argue (eh… I mean will fights wars) over all the unfairness of how its gonna be divided.

And there’s always mixed zones, that you can’t divide. They should have tried a ‘one-state but with strong provinces’ a lot earlier on, I guess.

How about states?  A Kurd state, a Shia state, a Sunni state.  Baghdad is a freezone like DC.

Could work…

This dates back from before the start of the invasion by the U.S.:

The occupied Iraq will be split into three zones: 87, 89, and 93.
