Texas passes law requiring moment of silence, Pledge recital.

The folks down in Texas don’t want President Bush hogging all of the religious fundamental spotlight so they’ve taken it upon themselves to pass legislation that forces kids to pause for a moment of silence and then recite both the Texas and U.S. Pledges of Allegiance.

AUSTIN—In less than 60 seconds, the Texas Senate voted Tuesday to require the state’s 4.1 million public school students to pause for a daily minute of silent prayer, meditation or reflection.

By voice vote, senators gave preliminary approval to Senate Bill 83, with final approval expected soon.

The measure, by Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, also mandates that school districts require students to recite the Texas and U.S. pledges of allegiance before the minute of silence.

Students could be excused from the pledge recitals upon written notice from a parent or guardian, but they wouldn’t be able to opt out of a minute of silence.

Naturally some folks are already decrying the bill as a transparent attempt to insert prayers back into school.  Will Harrell of the ACLU of Texas is predicting the Texas House will modify the bill to protect the rights of students to roll out prayer rugs or speak in tongues according to their particular religious beliefs. Wait a second, would speaking in tongues be violating the moment of silence?

When challenged, the Senator who wrote the bill and Governor both were able to recite the Texas Pledge though Gov. Dewhurst did manage to slip up and reveal his true intentions behind supporting the law:

Upon request, Dewhurst and Wentworth also proved able to recite the Texas pledge: “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible.“

Dewhurst didn’t answer when asked if the Senate, which like the House opens each day with a prayer, should begin each daily session with flag pledges.

“I can’t imagine anyone that would be opposed in these very tough times to let our youngsters take a moment of silence in school and have silent prayer,“ Dewhurst said.

Fortunately for the good Governor the Senator was able to cover for him:

“Or reflection or meditation,“ Wentworth said. “So we’re not insisting that they pray, just so long as they’re quiet for a minute. That’s all we’re asking.“

I wonder why these two gentlemen feel that special time needs to be set aside for folks to use as they see fit, be it prayer or self-reflection or navel contemplation, what have you. Do they think that unless they provide 60 seconds each day some of the kids might forget to pray? And why the forced Pledge recitals? Do they really think forcing kids to go through the motions will make them any more patriotic?

Welcome to America, land of the free, except for at the beginning of the school day when you MUST pray and you MUST recite a pledge of affiliation otherwise we’ll call you a commie pinko and give you violent wedgies in the hallway.

I’m beginning to think David is just a new breed of comment troll. Usually they pop in, spout off something clearly designed to piss people off and then sit back to watch the fun. If you’re lucky it’ll have one or two correct spellings and will be semi-coherent.

But David is a new breed. Articulate, verbose and stays just this side of being too outrageous to be obvious. Occasionally he slips up (as above) and shows some frustration or says something too ridiculous to accept as an honest opinion, but otherwise he manages to keep his cool.

It must be another complete accident that womens rights are far better in Christian cultures than non-Christian cultures.

No thanks to the Christians, that’s for damn sure.

As American feminist Elizabeth Cady Stanton noted, “The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way of woman’s emancipation.“ According to the 1997 Encarta Encyclopedia, “The belief that women were naturally weaker and inferior to men also was sanctioned by god-centered religions. In the Bible, God placed Eve under Adam’s authority, and Saint Paul urged Christian wives to be obedient to their husbands.“

The Bible, it seems, is a virtual handbook on the subjugation of women. It is filled with passages that teach that women are evil, unclean, should be kept silent, should be submissive to their husbands, and may be raped, sold, or even sacrificed. Early Christian writer Tertullian said “each of you women is an Eve. You are the gate of Hell, you are the temptress of the forbidden tree; you are the first deserter of the divine law.“ Not wanting there to be any question of the status of women in the new Pro-testant Reformation, Martin Luther decreed: “If a woman grows weary and at last dies from childbearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing, she is there to do it.“

Fortunately, most modern societies shun this primitive view of women. And since the majority of the bias against women has come from religious teachings, atheists are perfectly suited to come to their defense.

I’m pretty sure I’d attribute the advancement of women’s rights to Freethinkers and Atheists who happen to be able to live in largely Christian locations, and maybe to a few non-literal theists.

i do not even understand you rant,,, you are way to consumed with yourself.  are you from texas??  if so that would explain it…

i was only posting because i thought the comments were funny.  i did not put you or anyone else for that manner in the place of the evil judge. it was all in jest.  sorry if i knocked the chip off your shoulder.

i am very aware of the comments like you made toward the texas slang.  no different than the stuff said down here about yankess and those from the noearth.

and am i the only one that practices the posting of anothers comment in the little blue box.  man i just figured it out the uther day anyway.

in summary:  no my point was not to make you look like anything, especially a hypocrite.  my point was to make note of your lurning of the texas language…and a little state to state banter.  so i wont cipher your shot across my bow as a prelude to war…

friends???

I don’t know why you characterized it as a “rant” randall.

My tone was completely calm.  I believe you deliberately misrepresented what I said, snipping it out of context, to try to make me sound judgmental—

your words, not mine—“delusional and judgmental” and “chimes in” indicate a joint attribution of those qualities to everyone that you quoted in that post.

I don’t have to “rant” in order to take issue with such a characterization.  You’re pretty quick to jump in when someone paints “Christians” or “Texans” with a broad brush—why the hell wouldn’t I respond if I believe you’re misrepresenting me?  I take that more seriously than I do what people say about “Californians” or “Yankees.“

As for “friends,“ I think you sling that word around a little too casually.  The people I count as “friends” in this world are few and far between—and my relationship with them is based on experience, shared hardships, and demonstrated trustworthiness.  They’re not all as reliable as my wife, but they’re damn close.

I’d characterize you more as a moderately interesting screenname who seems somewhat interested in hearing opposing viewpoints.  Certainly worth having an occasional exchange with, but I don’t see myself buying you a beer.

Only David could make an asinine remark like this and think he was helping his argument for Christianity or think he was coming across as moderately informed.

David, dude, you seriously need to get a clue about so many things!

I’m much more comfortable with that.

Les,
Totally. on this thread I’ve just been having fun with the thin skinned amoung you. I’ve mentioned several times now that I was yanking your collective chains, and quite effectively, it appears. I’m done now, mostly because it’s not as fun as it was. But also because I made a mistake.

I should have never posted the comment about the more christian a nation, the more womens rights. Not because it isn’t true, it is. You can attribute it to anything you’d like. Like I posted, I suppose it’s just an accident in your mind. But I shouldn’t have posted it because It’s the one thing I’ve said on this thread that is a serious matter. Oh, I did say that Audi was better than BMW, which is serious, but hardly worth fighting over.

But the women’s rights thing is a very serious thing, and I should have never mixed it in here. Brandi hit it dead on, the belief among non-Christians about what the Bible teaches on this subject is so far off I can’t believe it. As I often say to unbelievers,“If the God you described was the God of the Bible, I wouldn’t beleieve in him either.“ Interestingly, I’ve read what Brandi is talking about in a book before, but it wasn’t the Bible, it was the Koran. Perhaps her Feminist was a little confused. Wouldn’t that be a surprise?

nowiser, you impress me more everytime I read your posts. Around here, that may not be taken as much of a compliment though.

I wasn’t sure about putting this here or in the “Constitution now with God’s law” thread.  So I’m going with the “Texas Laws” portion and putting it here.  My apologies for choice of thread if it’s too off topic.
**********************************************
According to MSNBC.com, Texas is the only Southern state that does not CURRENTLY prohibit same sex marriages.  I think the anti-gay groups may have been relying on the sodomy law to put homosexuals in prison, so they wouldn’t have to worry about marriages or unions to begin with.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4477610/

New York
Marriage law: Four legislative attempts to ban gay marriages have failed. The latest attempt in 1999 sought to void same-sex couple’s lawful marriages if they return, come to, or travel through New York.

I don’t know the details of the 1999 attempt, but that sounds pretty fucked up to me.

I think poor nowiser should be worried. He’s impressing David and randall and guys like them. He’s one step away from being rendered ineffectual , even counter-productive, if he keeps this up.

You’ve got to figure out what you’re doing, nowiser - then stop doing it!

(in my best Sally Field voice)  “They like me, they really like me!“  (bursts into incredulous tears).

On a side note, I just had a very interesting chat with the director of Comp studies at my school.  Really forced me to examine my pedagogy, and the inherent arrogance in some of the methodologies that I adopt.  I’m pretty excited about trying some new things in class.  And I think it’ll serve my students better too.

I realize that’s total non-sequitur, but I just had to “share”.

That’s great nowiser, that you’re getting so excited about various teaching methods. That’s the way teachers should be. I could probably do with some reconsidering of my methodologies too, even though I don’t instruct anyone.

randall, you put me in my place me with that clever remark. Still, I’m thinking how cool it might be to impress you.

Ohhhh man. It sucks being a liberal atheist Texan. The bit about the kids bowing their heads during the moment of silence really freaks me out. In my class, kids are forced to stand during the Texas pledge even if they have a note from a parent. I wonder what would happen if I tried to start a “Fellowship of Atheist Athletes”. Heheh. (We have a fellowship of christian athletes)Nothing against Christians or anything.
I hope Newdow wins tomarrow!

Sigh. Forcing kids to stand is sure to leave a great impression - but probably not the intended one.

Hooking up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, how’s that function?

That get most of my job done.

I got “and”, “but”, and “or”,
They’ll get you pretty far….

If it were the default template it might, but it’s not. It’s one I’m working on porting over so it’s in place for testing purposes. Same with the Kubrick theme. Google apparently has indexed them which is how some folks are hitting the site using those templates.
