Oh man! You just gotta love this debunking of the origin of candy canes over at the Urban Legends Reference Pages.
Basically, there’s an email going around as well as several books published that put forth the claim that the Candy Cane was invented to symbolize various aspects of Jesus and Christianity. Why you’d take such a symbol and suck on it, though, makes little sense to me even if the story were true. Like many Christmas traditions that Christianity claims as it’s own, however, it’s not so.
Damn shame if you ask me, I get the giggles just thinking about it.
