Spongmonkeys Quiznos ad?!

Most of you have probably already seen the Spongmonkeys flash animation by now. The one where they sing about how they love the moon? Remember that? It’s another one of those animations that’s so stunningly crappy that you just have to love it. If you’re a “hep” Internet dude, like me, who’s got his pulse on all the cool crappy flash animations that come and go then you’ve probably shown it to everyone you know would be horrified by it a long time ago. If you’re not “hep” like me then go check it out so you’ll have a frame of reference.

Back? OK, now here’s something I thought I’d never see. I was checking in at the Blues News video game website which has a little corner ad up at the top of the page that I usually actively ignore when out of the corner of my eye I notice the current ad for Quiznos subs has the Spongmonkeys in it! They’re bouncing back and forth in that way that they do and egging me to click on one or the other of them and I’m so stunned that I do at which point they break out in a rendition of their “we love the moon” song. Only instead of “moon” they’re singing about “subs.” It’s only a few moments long and then it launches you to a site where you can print out a “qpon" good for a buck off one of their subs that not only features the Spongmonkeys popping up as you mouse over various buttons, but offers a Spongmonkeys screen saver which replays the ad for the amusement of your office coworkers while advertising Quiznos. I can’t figure out how to link to the ad itself so you’ll have to either go to Blue’s News and hit reload a lot or download the screen saver if you want to see it.

I couldn’t believe it. The Spongmonkeys have sold out to the corporate advertising world. More importantly some guys who came up with a really crappy song and flash animation to match it have somehow managed to land an ad deal with a major chain of sub shops.

That cinches it. I’ve have got to have Eric teach me how to work in Flash, but not so well that I put out animations better than the Spongmonkeys. Crappy is key it would seem, and it also requires the least amount of effort. Then I’ll hit Hairboy up for a crappy song as he has lots of funny voices he can do including one that sounds a lot like the Spongmonkeys. But not TOO close. Then I’ll just sit back and wait for the licensing offers to roll in. Easy money!

I believe the ad is insulting and degrading. It’s not a smart ad for other then the demographics intended. Quiznos will have lost a whole lot more demographics then gained if the ad continues.

Though the grapics or flash is very creative it sucks when tied to a commercial with food. Who are they targeting? The only creatures I know of live at the city dump, rats.

(Once again being hypocritical to aforesaid point by commenting)

To be completely honest, the first time I saw this commercial, I thought that Quizno’s made it cheap so that they could accomodate the vast expenses to air it during the Super Bowl, and to keep it on the air afterwards.  And I still think that’s true.

And by the way: All of you who are grossed out by it REAALLLY need to grow some kind of a stomach.  Or go visit a farm and see where all this food comes from!  I’m no vegetarian myself, but MAN do cows stink.  I’m not even going to TOUCH the chicken issue.

As for the “stereotyping the demographic” issue:
CHILL THE FUCK OUT.  I’m Italian - do you think I get all pissed off at the stereotypes printed on pizza boxes; or, worse, the ones on HBO?  Hell, I ENJOY The Supranos.

The comedian Nick DiPoalo (Despite his overtly racist opinions on Tough Crowd) had a great point in one of his bits: Instead of the Italian “mob” stereotype, he’s more offended by Olive Garden commercials, who show Italian American families taking their Italian relatives to freakin’ Olive Garden on their visit to America (I guess you’d have to see it for yourself - I think “bologna alfredo” explains most of it).  What I think is degrading to a culture is the constant effort at purging its image to some whitebread piece of crap.  “It’s not good to be different - let’s all just ACT white!"… Of course, nevermind just forgetting the issue of race altogether.  It’s a figment of the imagination!

Christ, man, if you take offense to a couple of cheaply animated tarsiers (thanks Dave Howard) singing to scratchy guitar music in the background, you’re just degrading yourself for being so damned anal.  Yeesh.

I think the commercial is very Gross with a capital “G”. When I see it I feel more like throwing up than eating a sub. I will never even try a Quiznos sub because of the commercial..

thank you that made my day. INSULTING AND DEGRADING TO WHAT/WHO? AND HOW?????????

heres something insulting: you’re a fucking idiot, if you’re that offended by this commercial then you shouldnt be watching television at all.

They are not road kill, dead rats or anything gross from a sewer or garbage dump. They are indeed TARSIERS!! If anyone cared to look closely you’ll notice the TARSIERS have superimposed teeth are very human looking and the eyes are intentionally superimposed to make them look silly. What’s so gross about these ads? Spongmonkeys = Flash animated Tarsiers.  Look closely at the commercial and you will see that these are just a bunch of funny cheap animations of living mammals with identical human (British Dental Association type) teeth.

I am well-over the so-called demographic and I can’t wait for the next commercial to come out. They’re asinine, stupid and endearing. Can’t get enough of them!! They do have a new very short animation on the Quiznos website showing the Spongmonkeys in front of the Giza Pyramids.

Spongmonkey’s creators also took a stab at cows… check out this one and decide for yourself if you think this animation will keep you from eating beef or dairy products (unless you’re already a vegetarian, then we already know the answer) Check this out: http://www.rathergood.com/zoology

Those who think the ads are disgusting and are afraid of eating at Quiznos fearing a dead rodent in the sandwich need to lighten-up, chill out and get a sense of humor. I’d be more afraid of eating a Subway Sandwich. (never gotten sick at Quiznos) Jared is a goofy freak. Arby’s oven mitt is just 20 years too late. Animated Tarsiers kick ass!

Personally I can no longer eat their subs due to my diet (low carb). However, they do have salads and that nice pepper bar… Viva Spongmonkeys!!!

The Quiznos spots are a hoot! I love adverts like these! The more bizarre the better I say! I’ll always try the wierd stuff first.

Yuk!  What gross advertising.  We used to patronize Quizno’s all the time, but we WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN.  In all honesty, my stomach turns when I pass their store.
In reply to the idiots that say, “It got your attention,” well it gets my attention when I walk past someone who just passed gas, too.

Doesn’t anyone think it’s silly how people will avoid eating at a place that uses controversial images to advertise food but those same people will eagerly eat at a place that uses images such as a big juicy burger with leafy green lettuce, succulent red tomatoes, generous cheese etc, and when you get the actual burger, it looks nothing like the advertisement. What you actually get is much less than advertised.

What’s up with that?

I guess as long as you’re lied to, it’s palatable.

Nice commentary that our 18 to 24 yr old demographic is so exited about dead rodents in a food ad. These tv educated morons are someday gonna be running things, if they ever move out of mom’s house. Oh yeah, I get it, it disgusts some people so you all think its cool. But would you really spend your allowance money on Quiznos if it meant you couldn’t buy orange dye or spike grease? Muttonheads, all of you!

Totally revolting, the spot was just on, and I wanted to e-mail Quiznos my opinion, and found this site, I used to love Quiznos, but, I can’t even look at a Quiznos store without thinking about those dead hamsters singing in that disgusting voice, although, I can picture some stoned High School drop-outs loving the commercial and probably run out to buy a sub every time they see it on the tube. Maybe that’s the demographic their trying to nail, who buys more food than stoners? Bushbabbies or spongmonkeys? who gives a crap? they suck!

Wow… remove all those sticks from your asses people. Animals singing about how much they like subs at Quizno’s is no indication of what the subs are made out of. Unless these Tarsiers(sp?) like to eat thier own. As far as the ones saying thet they will not be eating at Quizno’s ever again because of this commercial, thats just stupid. However, it is your right. As far as the remarks that the Ad will hurt quizno’s and you can’t beleive their marketing would allow it. Unless you work in the Marketiing industry you have no idea what you are talking about. If this commercial produces even 100 new customers per store in a months time it is successful.

Long before the commercials came out Quiznos was my favorite sub joint.  It’s still my favorite, the only difference being that I’m almost constantly thinking of the Spongmonkeys ads (which I absolutely LOVE) so now I eat there even more than before.  Brilliant.
I’d also like to thank Dave H. for setting me straight, I’ve been telling people that they are chinchillas....

Good going Les, this is the best thread you have had here in a long long time. I have been laughing my ass completely off.

It is shocking to me how many people here seem to miss the point of marketing especially since it rules so much of our lives. Here is a hint for all those people that are so disgusted they can’t seem to talk about anything else…

“I don’t care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right”.

Excuse me, I have to laugh some more.

You’ll note that I’ve avoided commenting on this one for awhile now. It has been pretty amusing watching it develop. It’s also amazing that folks will go out of their way to comment on something as inane as an advertising campaign yet not engage in discussions on more weighty issues.

Not that I haven’t been critical of certain ad campaigns in the past myself, but still…

This thread has been a source of amusement. I have been a fan of the rathergood.com site for quite a while. My boyfriend and I would sing “we love the moon” . And when we saw the commercial we loved it. Our favorite sub place had utilized one of our favorite cartoons. Right on! At least it isn’t freakin Dizzkneed crap.

The first time I saw one of these commercials (during the superbowl), I was just staring blankly at the television screen. I thought it was strange, but very catchy. I wanted to see it again but didn’t until a couple days later. Now networks play it all the time and I laugh and laugh every time it comes on.

To all the people who hate this commercial, I agree with ajkoontz (above) - Remove the sticks from your collective asses. Go back to the dark ages where you belong. It is a fun and different commercial and it reminds me of the crazy-fun “weeeeeee” flash creation from a couple years ago.

I hope to see the Spongemonkeys in other commercials with their crazy look and catchy tunes!

Stacy, don’t feel bad. I thought they were chinchillas too! I downloaded the screen saver last night, and its hilarious. I fell in love with the commercials the first time I saw one. Now I find myself channel surfing to FIND ONE!! Am I obsessed? I love the rathergood site...check out the kittens! My boyfriend and I were driving around last week talking about them and actually wanted to try the coupon thing, but then we couldn’t FIND a Quiznos :( Yes, they are disturbing, but they’re hilarious.

I had thought they were chicken carcasses. The commercial is rather disturbing, and it makes me not want to eat at Q’s. But they caught people’s attention. From a marketing perspective, Q’s did a great job for achieving that alone.

Honestly, I believe that the Spongmonkeys are the only think Quizno’s has going it its favor.

I can’t stand Quizno’s subs because they are not subs.  A real submarine sandwich is overloaded with goodies and takes a family to eat, that’s just one sub.

Quizno’s, nice try, but they’re just sandwiches that really offer nothing more than a change of store colors in comparison to Subway.

The Spongmonkeys rock.  They inspired me to learn guitar and wear that crazy British Navy cap.  Now I’m a guitar virtuoso and am rocking the clubs left and right.

I love them so much, now my band is called the Jibbitymonkeys.  Isn’t it great!  They inspire me to finish my education and to hold onto coupons.  They’ve taught me the importance of making sure a restaurant has a pepper bar before I spend my hard earned gig money on the food.

The Spongs also taught me that any coupon works.  I’m still having some problems because I tried forcing a KFC to accept my Checkers coupons for a bucket o’ chicken.  I told them that they better watch out, or I’ll hit them with my guitar, but they didn’t listen, and some crazy ninjas came out from the walk-in freezer and threw frozen biscuits at me.

I managed to dodge the biscuits, and I then started jamming on my guitar.  My solo virtuosity squealed at such a high pitch the ninjas went into seizures.  I then sang the Quizno’s song and then they gave me 3 buckets of chicken! Can you believe it!  3!!!!!

So in a roundabout way, my coupon worked, thus proving the usefulness of the Spongmonkeys.  Email me to find out how my lessons from the

Spongmonkeys led me to an astounding court victory two weeks ago.

Quizno’s - The screeching rats are horrible!

Seth Stevenson - Who’s paying you?  Really!  What’s the deal?  I can’t believe it!

I will continue to call the local Q places as will my friends.  The characters look like rats.  Not a good idea association for a food place.  The sound is horrible.  It’s actually disturbing.  At best - one has to hit the mute button.

I won’t eat the subs unless/until they quit the rat ads.

Do you really want to eat at a resturant that is using RATS to advertise their product. Doesn’t it make you wonder what you are really eating? Taste like chicken, but is it really???? the commercial looks cheap. I would understand doing a cheap commercial if it meant cheaper prices at Quiznos, but if you look at their menu this is not happening. What family can afford to eat out at those prices? So all i have to say is eat at SUBWAY!!!!!!!!!
