Proving once again that there is no ego so large that it can’t be bought with a large enough wad of cash, Spike Lee has settled his dispute with Viacom over their plans to rename the cable channel TNN to “Spike TV”.
Spike Lee settles ‘Spike TV’ lawsuit
NEW YORK, July 7—Spike TV won’t be getting spiked after all. Filmmaker Spike Lee and Viacom settled a dispute Monday that allows the media giant to rebrand its TNN network as Spike TV, ending a lawsuit that contended the new moniker was a deliberate attempt to hijack Lee’s image.
Personally I would’ve loved seeing this go to trial because I honestly don’t see that Spike Lee had much of a leg to stand on and thought a little public humiliation might bring his ego into check, but perhaps a dawning realization that he was about to get bitch slapped publicly in a court of law was behind his decision to settle. Terms of the settlement weren’t released so we can only speculate, but I imagine they tossed him a few dollars to help ease the pain of realizing that not every use of the word “spike” is in reference to him.
