One of the things I missed when I made the switch from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox was a little add-on called ieSpell which allowed you to spell check web forms such as the ones I use to input my entries into SEB. So it was with much rejoicing that I discovered that there was a project underway to make the spell checker in the email client Thunderbird available in Firefox. Problem is that project hasn’t been updated in months and the installation instructions supplied don’t work properly with the latest releases of Firefox. I did stumble across some rather convoluted instructions on getting it to work, but it requires downloading the non-self installing version of Firefox and jumping through various other hoops. I wondered if the day would ever come when we would see a proper spell checking extension for Firefox.
Turns out, it has. If you’re using Firefox and want to be able to spell check forms in your browser window then go get SpellBound. A simple install process right from the web page, close and restart Firefox, then pick which dictionaries you want to install (and they have quite a few to choose from). Voilà! You can once again appear reasonably competent at spelling like I appear to be. This is my number 1 must-have extension for Firefox.
The one thing that ieSpell does that SpellBound doesn’t is check all the fields on the form at once. With SpellBound you have to check each field individually. Still, a small price to pay for a spell checker in Firefox.
