Oh well. Ignoring the derogatory term it substitutes; I’m pleased that it groups us with the likes of Sojourer Truth, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Louis Armstrong. Wouldn’t it be cool to be stuck in a broken elevator with the likes of them?

To tell the truth, down here people are more racist towards Hispanics than towards blacks. All the names go to them.

Maybe I’ve missed something, but I hang out with people of all ages - I have a teenage son, my SO is 20, and my friends are people my age to their 50s (generally).

I was discussing this on another much larger message board where we determined that this was not just a “southern thing”. People have heard it in New York, California, Florida… ect.  I was kinda floored myself.  I have never heard it before this article but I suppose I might hear it more now that I know.

Hat’s off to that. I don’t care if I agree with racism or not (which I am very decidedly against - also sexism and discrimination on sex orientation). I don’t care if they’re idiots or not.

I can’t have any respect for people who don’t have the backbone to take a stand for themselves. The fact that these particulars smear Canada in the process is just icing on the cake. They can die alongside their flag and rifle like they deserve. Cowards.

Perhaps thats why in so many parts of the world ‘American’ is a substitute for uneducated bigot.

This must be pretty new; I’ve lived in the South all my life and I’ve never heard this, although I don’t frequent the dens of crackers and/or white trash, except for the occasional wedding or funeral, of course.

I have been called “pink” before, when I went into a Caribbean grocery/deli in Newark, NJ, sotto voce; all the conversation in the place stopped.  Pretty mild form of racism, but there really aren’t any good racist words for white people.  “Honky”?  Most would laugh.

Must be a new use, if not simply fictional.  I’m sure the originator sees it as a fresh and witty piece of subterfuge. 

I have heard of using “Canadian” as an insult without it being tied to a racial meaning-I think South Park pretty much started it.  The few times I’ve heard it used was as a replacement for stupid, retarded, or “gay” as the youth use that word now.  Usually used to refer to music or pop-culture items-"That song is so Canadian, like fucking Anne Murray Canadian!”
Just more American pop-culture stupidity...practically the only thing we Americans are good at anymore.

Wow, that’s news to me.  I live in Alaska and I’ve never herd Canadian as a replacement for a racial slur (although I do hear plenty racial slurs tossed around).  I have watched South Park and seen them use Canadian as a general rip on the country.

Racism at it’s core is pure laziness.  If you really want to hate people go out and get to know them, because if you get to know anyone well enough you can easily find reasons to hate them for who they are instead of what they are.  //sarcasm

As a neutral external observer the Canadians were always ahead of the Americans in human rights , democracy and racial equality so its obvious that the word Canadian would stand for all these aspects so it could be a replace for the n word or the f s r word (fucking stupid retard)

Be that as it may, Neutral Observer, at least where I am (it’s very hard to make generalizations about Canada - geography and economy playing the largest pair role in that)… we’re sliding backwards faster each day. We’ve even adopted that whole left-right bullshit from the USA in recent years that I’d hoped we long discarded. I get people telling me about how politics is too complicated and having only two options would “make decisions so much easier - either you’re for or against something"…

*sigh*… I’d think of moving to another country, but if I can’t make an effort to make this one better, why would they want me? I mean, is working a skilled job, then spending that money really enough?

As a Black person, I fail to be offended.  I mean, it’s not like they’re saying German or something.

Uh, Greenlander, Jane?  Lots of Danes already think the Greenlanders are just stupid seal-eating skraels (nasty for Inuit).  And here where I live, in Austria, the Germans are not too popular either- they got “us” into WWII, after all, and now they’re clogging up our universities, ‘cause it’s cheaper here.

Let’s face it: for any ethnic or national group, there’s someone who hates them.  It might well be that this kind of hatred comes natural to us, an extension of the distrust of strangers that helps keep tribes together.  But it can be unlearned, and must be unlearned, if we’re to keep our modern global village together.

Racism, and nationalism, are the enemies of all of us.  Whatever our differences are, people are people.

Hmmm… Some call themselves Eskimos, others Inuit, still others Yupik or Kalaallit.  Check out the wiki article on Eskimos for an instructive example of the difficulties of naming a people.

the same goes for rednecks, beaners, and whatever else you would like to call a specific ethnic group. i suppose some would call that racist, i however believe it is just a more specific term to use when referring to a large group of morons.

i myself am half mexican and have come across more than one beaner in my time. on the other hand, i know of a much larger group of intelligent and well to-do mexicans.

there is nothing wrong with being a certain sex, ethnicity or of a specific religion. i guess that is why i just call people asshats or fucktards, gets my point across a little bit clearer.
